BIO:
Height: 6-2
Weight: 215-ish
BJJ Purple Belt
Age: 43 in March 2014

I train Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and I'm also training and competing in Scottish Highland Games. I also travel fairly regularly for work (typically Hawaii) & post pics in here from those trips as well. Before starting my first "real" strength program in May 2010, I had not lifted weights for close to 20 years. Believe it or not Sherdog S&C has been a huge source of knowledge & motivation for me.

In May 2010, I tested my 5 rep max:

Bench: 205
Squat: 225
Deadlift: 255
SOHP: 125

I've made huge gains since starting & totaled 1223 at a Powerlifting meet in 2013 with a 430 squat, 298 paused bench & 496 deadlift. Due to lots of personal & work-related issues in 2013 & early 2014, my training was very inconsistent, hoping to remedy that this year.

BIG-PICTURE GOALS FOR 2015
1) Be consistent.

Lots of work around the house today, made it into the gym around 4pm. Workout felt good, although bench was harder than it should've been.

This log sucks

Looking forward to 2015's installment calvus. Will read.

Rode my bike to the beach for volleyball today. Came home through downtown, about 10 miles total bike ride, and really pushed the pace. 2 Hours of beach volleyball. Good stuff.

BJJ - 2 Hours

1 Hour of no gi, lots of drilling then two 6-minute sparring sessions. Worked with a big guy who's pretty good (purple belt in gi) and then got to roll with a newb. The newb roll was fun, he had evidently played around with BJJ before & done a lot of internet video watching LOL. He kept doing naming the things I was doing :) So I would sit in a butterfly guard & he would go "that's butterfly guard", and basically did that the whole time. Good times :)

1 Hour of gi after that, which was just sparring for an hour, I did multiple 6-minute rounds, not sure how many, but I did get 1 solid 6 minutes in with Babalu Sobral. That was fun, the guy's a legend. And he smashed me pretty good lol. Finished up with an 8-minute round with the big purple belt from nogi, I was exhausted at the end. Followed it up with a big Sushi lunch.

Got into the gym late this evening, a little tired from BJJ this morning. But the workout was good. I belted up for the last set of deadlifts - 10 reps was pretty easy, just kinda ran out of breath at the end.

THROWING

Hammer
Lots of winds
11x throws

Stones - 12.5# Stone
10x Standing, best around 39'
5x Full Spin, best about 41'

LWFD
5x Full Throws, all around 49'

Stones weren't bad, LWFD was ok, but as per usual, hammer was horrible. I did 11 throws with 3 turns in blades, best ones were around 74'. With a 16# Hammer :( - so I took the blades off & just did 1 wind, hit the damn ground coming around & also threw that 74'. FML. Maybe I'll just start throwing hammers with a single wind in tennis shoes.

BW: 217.0 <-- too heavy

BJJ - 1 Hour

Pretty big class today for 10am. Must be the New Year. We worked on some open guard movement drills, then worked on a sweep to straight ankle lock - pretty nice. Followed that with 3x5 minute rounds. Conditioning felt fine, even though I'm a little heavy right now. Gonna try to get some sparring in tomorrow, then I'm back in Hawaii for a week.

Yes 217 is way too heavy.

I'd shoot for like 155 then cut to 135 to fight so you can use your height advantage

Maybe after I finish the keg of Fat Tire I have at home...

Was a little tired in the gym today, and got frustrated. The bar I was benching with had the worst knurling ever, my hands were literally slipping wider on the last set. At least I got >5 reps in. Progress. Heading home to home-made enchiladas suizas :)

That's when the hockey tape comes out.

I've never experienced my hands slipping while benching. You may be taking the concept of pulling the bar apart a bit far.

I started my second round of the RRBT program today. Got a bum hip and lower back so I need something like that to stay motivated. I gave the KTA a look over again but meh, never had much success using the heavy grippers. Almost got #3 at the end of RRBT though.

It's happened to me with chromed out, shitty commercial gym bars. Chalk actually makes it worse.
