1 Hour BJJ Comp Class

Had a super busy week in HI last week, then came home & had about 30 family members at the house. Really stressful. Several of my teammates competed in a tournament over the weekend & did great. 8 guys entered, and they all medaled. 5 golds. Not too shabby. I got back in today, Kings MMA is really blowing up so we had a schedule change, moving the morning BJJ on MWF up an hour to 10am. New schedule too, this will be a "Competition Class". Pretty fun today, we did 3 minute rounds of specific training, followed by 30 seconds of rest to find a new partner. Did several rounds of guard passing, side control, takedowns, etc.....Had about 15 people there, including 3 black belts. Good stuff.

BJJ - 2 Hours - Gi & nogi

Neck was a little tweaked today but still got in an hour of gi & then an hour of nogi. Rolled with a really good purple belt that I haven't rolled with before. Worked with a really good wrestler in nogi. Did a better job being patient in nogi. good stuff.

BJJ - 1 Hour gi

1 Hour of sparring today, lots of 5 minute rounds with 60 second breaks between rounds. Won some / lost some. Did a better job with grip fighting.

1 Hour BJJ gi

Open mat on the Friday after Thanksgiving. Pretty chill, got to some lighter rolls & a couple of harder rolls. Good stuff.

Biked to the beach (4.5miles each way) & played 3 hours of doubles volleyball. Got some exercise & had fun. Not too windy, beautiful day!

1 Hour Jiujitsu - gi

Warmup, then 4x 2 minutes rounds of guard passing specific training, 4x 2 minutes rounds of side control specific training, then 4x5 minutes of sparring. Didn't flow too good today, feeling Mondayish I guess. At least I got the time in.

2 Hours Jiujitsu - gi & nogi

My conditioning has improved enough so that 2 hours today was no problem. This is great, because it makes it easier to learn & easier to remember stuff. We worked the same techniques today for both gi & nogi. DLR Guard, transition to RDLR if the guy stuffs the pushing leg. In gi, collar grip & near sleeve, then collar drag to the floor & either knee-tap to side control or take the back. In nogi, same thing, just arm drag instead of collar. Didn't get too many opportunities to work this during live rolling - probably should have tried harder.

Saturday is Kings MMA 5th Anniversary. Going to be a big party, seminar & belt promotion - should be a lot of fun!

BJJ - 1 Hour gi

1 Hour Comp Class today. Worked a lot of half-guard & side control. Big class today, maybe 20 people? I got to work with 4 different black belts, so that was cool.

Reading your log would never suggest you're an old man.

Also, love the fact that you get to train with some greats. Always a pleasure reading this log.

Haha - thanks man! Yeah, really love training at Kings - there are a lot of quality black belts that I get to roll with. Babalu has a great sense of humor, but sometimes that dude is INTENSE. We are having a big 5th Anniversary Seminar on Saturday. Tons of guys will be there including Gordo (inventor of half guard), Rafael Cordeiro, Vanderlei Silva, Verdum, Rafael Dos Anjos, Babalu, Machida, etc.... Hopefully I'll get some good photos.

Here's a pic from yesterday:

BJJ - 2 Hours - gi & nogi

Continued working DLR to RDLR transitions & sweeps. Felt a little tired today, but still tried to open my game up a bunch, move, stand & not rest on top or bottom. As a result I got a tapped a bunch, but I think it was good. Hit an X-guard sweep in nogi, so that was cool.

BJJ - 1 Hour

Almost didn't make it in this morning because of work, but I'm glad I did. 1 hour of rolling, probably 8x5 min or something close to that. 5 blackbelts in class, including a 4th degree visitor from Gracie Barra, Marcello. I rolled with him, that guys jiujitsu was effortless.

I had a couple of things that I want to work on & was able to get some reps in on both. First one is an escape from bottom half, where I get the farside underhook, and work to get up on my side, drive the arm into the air & recover guard. This worked pretty well for me today, even recovered guard on a blackbelt, so that was cool. The 2nd item was to continue working my "old school" open/half guard. Fucosing on distance control, not being flat & attacking more. Also had success with this vs several different level guys.

Kings MMA 5th Anniversary & Seminar today. Fun stuff - Saw 3 of my training partners get their black belts & 4 of my buddies got promoted to brown. I still have some work to do, but brown is probably on the horizon in 2016. There were tons of people there & probably 20+ black belts if you include all the MMA guys like Verdum, Machida, etc...

For the seminar, Gordo showed a sweep when sitting up from DLR & then Gabi Garcia showed another sweep from the same position. Those techniques are great, because these are positions I'm working on. Then we had another black belt (forgot the name) show us a couple of kneebar & toe hold variations from top half guard. Then Babalu showed us some details on the bow & arrow choke.

All in all, it was a great day. Now off to a birthday party, my youngest daughter is 14 today :)

BJJ - 1 Hour gi

All sparring today. That's always tough on a Monday. 8x 5 minute rounds. I rolled with a really good blue belt MMA fighter from Mexico. Really solid butterfly guard, gave me problems. Also got to roll with Master Gordo (yes, that gordo) - I pulled half guard immediately so I could learn something lol. Really like his pressure style. Had some other good rolls as well. Still need to work getting out of side control. Rolled with another blue belt who is my size & strong. I let him pass my guard so I could work some side control escapes that I've been having success with but nothing worked lol. I was stuck in side control for the next 4:30. In other news I got my 4th stripe on my purple belt, brown belt in a year or so I guess.

Stripes are nice.

They act like circles on a target. Gives people something to aim at

I have a lot of work to do before I'm ready for brown...

The last page of posts has been great to read / look at calvus! Thanks for sharing, and congrats on another stripe on your purple, really good work.
