My ADD Training Log - 2012

Congrats on the PRs! Looks like a fun day!

I think I might get my friend the throws coach to show me the basics on the implements here soon. Really does look enjoyable.

Awesome job man! Looks like you did great

Congrats, seems like a successful day!

Congrats, love the photos!

great job man. Congrats on the results, 5th is not bad at all, considering your short time in the sport. Cool pictures, too!

Thanks guys - I appreciate the support! This was only my 3rd competition & my 1st time competing at the "B Class" so I'm also very pleased with 5th. At the same time, with more practice & focus I could've done a lot better.

Congrats Calvus!

Great work, Calvus. And kilt totally works for you.

Thanks guys - Moose, when are you throwing again??

Thanks Jaunty - kilts are awesome. I'm planning on running a 5k on July 4th in a kilt. :D

Legio, do it! There's a lot of carryover from weightlifting to throwing...It's super fun.

So after I've had a couple of days to think about the competition there are definitely some things I need to work on.

1) I need to get stronger. Almost everyone in my group was stronger than me. I'm going to be re-vamping my training in July, I feel like I haven't made many strength gains in the past 5 months, so I will be investigating this.

2) I need to practice more often. Since it's tough for me to practice with my group on the weekends due to kids soccer, I'm trying to get a mid-week practice organized. It really helps to have others to work with, since they can critique my technique, offer pointers, etc. Also, in my regular practice group we have the #2 ranked US Woman for Highland Games, and the #1 racked Amateur in the World (going pro this summer), plus a couple of top-ranked guys so there's lots of experience there for me to learn from.

Also, I'm really sore. Right arm, right shoulder, right trap, upper & lower back, hamstrings. Damn.

**EDIT - More Detail **

Here's what I need to work on in specific events:

Stones:
- Continue to practice & get consistent, there are tons of small details here.
- Need to work on "pop" at the end, make sure I'm blocking hard with my left side
- Continue to work spin

Weights:
- Work on getting my left foot down quicker
- keep my head up
- drive at the end

Hammer:
- I'm not using my hips at all. Start pulling with my hips

WOB:
- More practice, need to use my hips
- Might start spinning

Sheaf:
- Lots more practice. My sheaf is terrible.

As soon as I can dude. I'm moving back in to my parents next month so once I get settled I'll look for competitions around me. Good thing is Oklahoma is really big into highland games and powerlifting so I'll have a lot of oppurtunties to compete in my new home state.

Highland Games GOALS
- Current PR's in ()

Braemar Stone: 31' (30'2")
Open Stone: 40' (37'2")
LWFD: 55' (51'10.5")
HWFD: 26' (24'9")
Light Hammer: 95' (89'7")
Heavy Hammer: 75' (72')
WOB: 12' (11')

Time for some accountability. Each of these goals are achievable with improvements in my technique. Strength of course will help, especially in WOB, but technique is my focus here. If I can hit each of these goals, I'll also be in a position to move up from the B Class to the A Class, where I'll be throwing with the really big boys.

BJJ - Gi - almost 2 Hours

Good training today. Worked on a pretty basic hip throw - got launched into orbit by a Judo blackbelt :icon_lol: Rolling went well, I was relaxed & didn't really get tired at all. Let me repeat that: My fat, Highland Games throwing ass had a 1.5 hour deadlift workout earlier today & then did 2 hours of BJJ & didn't get tired.

I'm trying to work my open guard more for several reasons:
1) My open guard sucks
2) I think it will open my game up more
3) I think it will speed my game up more

Really trying to make an effort to get in more BJJ every week. I need to train 3-4 days a week at least in order to suck less. I'm not a very good blue belt right now and I would really like to earn a purple belt someday & not have it be a joke.

Today was a good step in the right direction. Today was a good day.

In the States, is it acceptable to wear kilts as formal attire? If so, you should be looking for opportunities to diversify your kilt-wearing opportunities. In the UK you can wear them to "black tie" events (i.e. instead of a regular dinner jacket) but I think that normally it's only done by Scottish people or military personnel from regiments with Scottish origins.

Yes, kilts are absolutely acceptable as formal attire. I've worn it out a couple of times outside of Highland Games events. It does attract attention...

BJJ - 1 Hour Open Mat

Nice open mat tonight, got in a handfull of 5 minute rounds - nothing too intense. I got to roll with World Champion Roberto "Tussa" Alencar tonight - that was awesome! He swept me soooo easy, but I learned a few things too.

Pics or it didn't happen:

BJJ - Gi - 1.5 Hours

Worked on attacks from mount tonight, got a lot of live rolling in. Learned to get my knee higher & closer to the head when I'm in side control & I get my knee under the elbow. This little tip helped a lot. Also worked alot of open guard, really trying to open up my game a lot...

So it works out nicely that the local throws coach helping at the university also intends to do some master's throwing. Might be able to go toss some of the implements around with him soon.
Thanks for the inspiration to try it out Calvus! Will let you know how it goes if we get it together.
