Getting us off of the planet is probably the single most important initiative that can be engaged in by science today.

Things are probably better now on Earth than they ever were by all measures of Human Development. That does not mean things won't go downhill, but precisely because of that we should push space exploration.
Personally I am not sure the colonization of Mars is the answer to everything, as I don't believe we can fuck up Earth to the extent that Mars is a better place for humans to live. But just trying to get humans there will drive science and technology to the next level.
Humanity's future may be in space in the far future. But we need to make the next step.
Actually, this response of yours is far more preposterous.... said some preposterously ignorant Star Wars nerd.

I can see perfectly why you would feel this way. My apologies for referencing Star Wars nerds instead of Star Trek nerds. You guys should be given your well-deserved props, too.

Says the weeaboo with some dorky anime thing in his av. Lol.
Y'all are nerds.
I wish I could live couple hundred years in the future when we live on other planets and have already integrated with aliens and androids etc. I want a green girlfriend with 3 breasts or some kinda fembot hybred.
The circlejerk around this guy reminds me of Jobs before he died.

By comparison Jobs, although brilliant was making trinketsThe circlejerk around this guy reminds me of Jobs before he died.
What was this Zip2 again? So he hires and pays people who know how to build rockets. It is not like he did it with his bare hands from scratch.
Also, I dont get something about Paypal. Why didnt Visa, Mastercard, Western Union, or Moneygram etc, just take over that market? They could have made Paypal obsolete. Does anybody even use Paypal now?
edit:
Okay I know what zip2 is now, but seriously, you are telling me it was worth $341mil. Yeh right.
Humans being what they are, Space exploration and colonization is our best hope to achieve your goals. Earth will be a much healthier place when we have more room, and humanity will be much healthier when resources are less scarce.Better, yes. One can't really argue that we were better suited for such exploration when we weren't even close to being technologically capable of it. But are we yet worthy? Personally, I do not think so.
We still allow vast numbers of humans to starve to death globally, and we also pollute our own waterways even in first world countries. And that's only two examples of our failure as of yet to handle things properly here.
Pushing projects like this before achieving a proper mastery of our own planet isn't taking the next step, it's attempting to skip one.
