Gym/Training Muay Thai Gym Q&A

if you gonna stay for that long, why not try chiang mai or somewhere in isan?
 
I wanted to party, train, and maybe get a fight so I figured the south would be better.
 
I get you. But its still easy to party in a big and friendly city like chiang mai. and i think its even more easy to get fights there.
 
I don't have time to read the whole thread, I've skimmed through but haven't seen Rawai mentioned at all. Can anyone give me any info on Rawai Muay Thai? It would be my first time in Thailand and I think it looks like it has a good mix of people there. I want to train properly though and learn as much as possible. It looks like a more relaxed and tourist friendly gym, I don't know if that's good or bad.

I'd just appreciate any info if possible. Thanks.

Rawai was actually where I learned muay Thai back in 2005, I think it was. I haven't been back since 2005, but I've been in the area plenty since then and have interacted with a lot of people from Rawai. It's changed hands since my trip, but I think it's still pretty much the same. It is a bit more relaxed and tourist-friendly, but so are the other gyms in the area. Honestly, whether that's good or bad depends on you. Do those things appeal to you? If so, Rawai is a fine choice, as is any other gym in Rawai/Nai Harn/Chalong (you could throw a rock and hit a few). I don't know if there's anything that separates Rawai from the pack, but at least in 2005, it was very beginner-oriented. You'll probably have a blast there. Will you come back a world-beater? Probably not.

I heard it's still the same and more of a tourist oriented gym for people who want to lose weight, especially girls. But if you want to fight, they will train you hard.
 
Ok visa came back, gonna pick it up from the PO Monday.

little help please. I'm from London, flying out this sat to phuket.where's the best place to exchange money? I was told to just bring sterling and exchange it in Phuket, where in phuket?
 
You should contact your bank, tell them you are going to Thailand and use the atms there to withdraw money because they have the best exchange rate. If you can still do that I recommend it for your trip. If not you have to go to a money changer or a bank that does it.

I get much better rates from the banks in Thailand than I do from the ATM.

can you change cash at the banks in phuket? any in particular that has a good rate? can you exchange at the airport? sorry for the stupid questions :P

I had my bank order some baht for me so I would have some money on hand just incase I needed something and didn't have time to get to an atm right away.

I prefer using atm cards so I don't have to carry a huge amount of money around (never a good thing).

Hey guys,

Wanted to go Thailand again and for 6 months, but apartantly that is a NO-NO.
You can only do 3months for 6months at a time.

What is the catch to get around this?? This is some stupid 'new law or rule about visas' from what the travel agent was telling me. Did anyone hear about this??

Just get a double entry tourist visa. You basically have to do a visa run once during your trip and extend your visa twice. Doesn't take long.

I would recommend that you check with the Thai consulate as opposed to listening too much of what a travel agent says.

While it is entirely possible that there has been some recent rule change, I can tell you that I am in Thailand right now and using a triple entry tourist visa. Each entry is good for 2 months in the country. It cost me about $80 and took 24 hours to get (I dropped off my completed application form in person at the consulate and picked up my visa the next day).

So... to stay 6 months you have to temporarily leave Thailand and get your passport stamped on re-entry.

Rules may be different for different nationalities, rules may have changed recently,... etc.
