Gym/Training Muay Thai Gym Q&A

I'm finally in phuket at PSG. Will start training tomorrow afternoon. First impressions is the gym looks really small but well equiped. The girls at reception are a delight, they gave us free water bottles n coffee, very smiley/chatty. I'm staying at the gym's accomodiation, the building looks like a buildingsite from the outside. Inside the rooms look rather nice but no hot water, bathroom is very basic but clean western toilet. ac is strong. No sunshine today, humid and hot but not as bad as i imagined. Going to fightHQ tomorrow to buy some gear, was closed today (sunday). My plans have changed to 1 week at psg, 1 week at pbg, chang then sinbi, 4 weeks in total. I'll do mini reviews or extended reviews if there's any interest. If not i won't bother. Jet lagged as fuck, 16 or so hours from london including 1 change.

Sweet, keep us updated, I leave in 2 weeks and I'm getting nervous haha.

Ok so i went to fightHQ to buy some gear. 1600b for fairtex gloves, 1300b for fairtex shinguards. I wanted topking but they are having supplier issues. I got the bgl6 12oz. No 16oz were available. I prefer my boons but whatever.
So had my first training session today, just me, my 2 mates from london and one other fighter so we pretty much had all one to one training. The gym itself is bigger than my initial impressions but still one the small side. 1 ring, maybe 12 bags although i didn't count. Bow the manager introduced herself, she's very friendly. The gym is very clean, lots of fans, still quite humid but nothing i can't live with. Todays session was 20mins skipping with the heavy traditional rope which i quite like. Just be careful of hitting your feet. Then stretching, shadow boxing with correction, i spent maybe 45 mins on this with my trainer man correcting EVERYTHING i've been doing, highly techincal, i loved it. He english isn't the best but good enough. Next on to pads, maybe 3 rounds before i developed 2 blisters which tore. He taped it up but was to painful so we switched up to just hand. Next was situps, then stretching. No bag work today, he said cause it's my first day to take it easy, end of session. Forgot to mention the way they wrap hands, completly different to how i normally wrap them but way better. Oh i think best option for cash is to bring your currency from home and exchange it here, they beat what i was getting offered in london(although i'm no expert). They are fixing the accomodation building at the moment so it's quite noisy. My mates that trained with me also highly enjoyed the training and thanked me for organising it, they had slightly different workouts as they both did bag work and different strenth/ conditioning excersies/ stretches,(both had seperate trainiers). I had man help me with my tight hamstrings. So far i have to say that was the best muay thai training i've ever had by far, i really enjoyed everything about it and can't wait for next session, although i'm pretty worried about my feet/blisters. I'll give more updates later on. With comparisions to other gyms if and when they happen as i'm quite tempted to stay here for the full 4 weeks. The location is far away enough from bangla to not get distracted, we haven't even been there yet. It's about 15/20 mins from the shopping mall with a bigc. Lots of pharmacies nearby, lots of 7/11s too. 7000 for 1 week plus accomodation, seems cheap enough for me but i'm sure there's cheaper accomodation if you look around. Wifi is quite good so far from my room. Sert is out of town atm for anyone hoping to train with him. Any questions let me know.
(Possible) cons: it's located where the locals live, can't compare with rest of phuket yet but i think it's less developed area. No problem for me might be for some. Gym flooring mats huge problem for me (only). No pull up bar that i could see. No hot water.

Edit: i really wished they had different floor mats, hopefully i get to use the ring tomorrow and it's more forgiving on my feet.

Edit: next day, blisters too painful to train. Limping as i walk. Fuck my life.

Which gym is PSG?

Weather ain't so great down here right now but that's to be expected this time of year. And is why my house was 50% off.

Psg is patong stadium gym. Same management as patongboxing gym. Right next door to patong boxing stadium also same management. Weather is ok, first day lots of rain, yesterday a little, today none.

Today no training, will tape feet tomorrow and see how painful my feet are. My mates went to both sessions and enjoyed it. 6 people training today in total. 2 of the trainers gave us a ride to a massage place we stayed for 2 hours. We treated the trainers for massages too but they only wanted 1 hour, but waited for us till we were finished after then took us to a resturant by the gym.

Little confused about the customs, are they expecting a tip?? Also 250b for thai green curry? 150b for pad thai? Seems expensive?
Does anyone wear trainers for skipping? I think skipping barefoot is what did most of the damage to my feet.

Lol yea i'd seen you post that before somewhere :) any advice? Mine is on my right big toe on the crease which is really painful to put weight on or bend. Got one on my small toe which has healed already.
Also seeing as you've been here multiple times do you mind answering the questions in my previous post pleaseeeee.

If you are at a Thai place, then no they are not expecting a tip. But if you do tip them, 20 baht is fine.

I rarely pay more than 60 baht for any Thai food in Thailand. Fuck paying 250 baht...

Yes, you can wear sneakers while skipping.

No tip, unless you don't feel like carrying change -- then you can just round up and leave the spare change (just don't leave 1 baht only though, it can be construed as an insult). If you're in a touristy/high-end place and there's a mandatory service charge on the bill, definitely DO NOT tip on top of that.

125 baht will get you a HUGE plate of pad thai at an air-conditioned sit-down place in metro Bangkok. 250 baht for green curry better be with river prawns at the same kinda sit-down place LOL.

thanks for the update.

I really like Fight HQ. Great service. And Anita (owner) will order in custom stuff for you if you are staying for a bit.

I've never trained at PSG but I have been to the stadium. I always figured that gym would be hot as fuck. Glad that you like your training. And it is a shame that Sert is off in China. Well, probably good for Sert but I trained with him a couple of times at a different gym and he really impressed me. Plus he is so big for a Thai.

Honestly, overall I think that is a shitty part of Patong. I had a Thai friend who lived right next to the Stadium and I never liked hanging out there. But maybe I missed out of some cool spots. But, to your point, you are close to "main" Patong anyway and so if you like it, cool.

Blisters are a tough part of the training when you first start. Too late now, but I really recommend "preemptive taping" for your feet when you first start. The other thing is that most trainers have a favorite spot that they like to train. It is weird. I have been at gyms where it is practically deserted and 3 groups are all training in the same space because each Thai likes it there. Personally, I would just ask the trainer to move to the ring to help save your feet.

A lot of people really like going to different gyms and checking them out. I am the opposite. If I find something I really like, I just stay there. So don't feel like you are missing out if you stay at PSG.

Good luck with the training! Hope that your feet get better fast.

I generally give small tips at restaurants (assuming that they haven't already stuck me with a service charge) if the service is good and it is a place that I go a lot. But it is not really expected. And by small tips I usually mean that I just round up the bill.

I always tip at massage places if they do a good job. Those women (and men) work hard. It is not an easy job.

I am not sure what most people do re tipping trainers but since I have always been at places with a dedicated trainer, I give him a tip /token of my appreciation every week. I also pick up a bottle of decent booze for the group from time to time or buy them a round if we happen to be out on the town (and I don't drink myself). Basically the trainers generally do awesome jobs and don't get paid much to do it. Showing some financial appreciation is very good IMO. Just don't lend them money or anything. Tipping is showing gratitude. Lending money is going to end badly.

Thanks for the reply guys, much appreciated. Sorry didn't make myself clear. When the trainers took us to the massage place on their scooters, waited for us for 2 hours then took us back to the gym, we paid for their massage too but i figured we should have tipped them but my mates said cause we paid then no.
I think i'd be happy staying here but my mates want to see more of the island so it's kinda out of my hands, sort of. I haven't really been out of the "shitty area" yet apart from the shopping mall which is massive (forgot how to spell the name) and the massage place.
I taped up my feet today and made it for the morning session. I'll edit this post with ano update a bit later. Mates are waiting for me to go out.

IMO - you don't need to tip the trainers for specific things. And paying for their massages was a real class move on your part.

Glad that you managed to train. I don't know if this makes you feel better or not but missing a bit of time to blisters happens to a lot of people when they come. So take it easy, try to figure out something with the tape, and hopefully you heal fast.

Seeing more of the island is great, even if you just do it in your spare time. Being in Patong, you can definitely go over to Karon (IMO - nice beach. Limited everything else) or Kata (smaller beach but lots of restaurants) in about 15 minutes.

Have fun and stay healthy

Shall i carry on with regular updates here? I feel like i've hijacked the thread?

So i made this mornings session. I put some atheletic tape over my toe. I can still feel pain when i put any weight on it. I didn't wake early enough so this morning got to training at 7.45 went for a 10 minute run around the car park, couldn't run too fast(cause of toe). Did some skipping, stretching (the trainers don't really help with stretching, my mate wants help with that so going to ask bow next time i see her cause i cant explain to the traininers lol). After shadow boxing. Then bag work. Teep and knee drills which i suck at. Next 5 or 6 rounds on pads with man. Fucking awesome. None stop correction, man misses NOTHING, he sees every mistake i do instantly and points out his disapproval hitting me lightly when i drop my hands or anything. After pads situps. End of session. Sweating like crazy. It does get very hot but it's not a concern of mine, maybe for others. Today there was 5 people training including me. After training i looked at my feet to assess the damage. 2 new blisters, which havent torn yet. Should i drain them?? The new skin on the existing blister has split open and is really painful to walk around in. Missing the afternoon session. After training we found a cheap resturant. Ate chicken and noodles, 40b excellent. We're going to look for where the locals eat and eat there instead of "western restuarants" with western pricing.
I have to say i'm really liking the family feel to the place, living amongst the locals in this area. It's something to be experienced, again not for everyone. I miss counted the number of bags, maybe 8 or so, plus my mate found a pull up bar he said, i havent seen it yet. Another thing to note, there is "some" structure to training but not strict. In my 2 sessions, it hasn't felt like "group" sessions, rather one to one. Will experiment with tape for existing and vunerable areas. Hopefully see the beach tomorrow.

Eddy whats your opinions of PBG pricing? We're undecided at the moment, it was the original plan. I've got a feeling the accomodation/ resturant etc will be very expensive. How isolated is it? We won't be hiring motorbikes so i'm thinking it might be a problem.

Anyone been to changs? I've read old reviews witch look great but nothing recent.

Chang use to be awesome, I heard it changed owners and is not as food now.

Reliable source? That's disappointing as the location looks excellent. There's a restuarnt next to it "red cafe" i ws looking forward to trying as well as the beach.

One thing to note: the 2 mates i'm travelling with, i'll call A and B.
A has had maybe 2 mt classes before this trip, he's made 5 out of 6 sessions so far. He's got some blisters but not as painful as mine. He's absolutely loving it here. No issues with accomodation except he mentioned only having 2 towels as his only gripe.
B has been training mma on and off but has very little interest in mt. Prior to the flight he said he would only do a few training sessions cause he wasn't that fit. His main goal is weightloss. He's also been to 5/6 sessions, no blister issues so maybe it's just my feet that is the issue and not so much the flooring. He's loving it too, he gets excited just before training starts. He mentioned towels too as his only negative.
It rained for maybe 30 mins today. I'm quite suprised there hasn't been more rain, touch wood. None of us have a problem with location. We have barely left the local area, since A and B don't want to miss any sessions it leaves us limited time to explore, having said that there's still loads of the local area we haven't been to yet. I forgot to mention A is staying 2 weeks, B is staying 3 weeks. After discussing it, we have all agreed to stay another week but will reassess on sat/sun, which we're all more than happy about. I want to get at least 1 week solid training at this gym after this start-stop week, maybe 4 weeks. We'll see. Fresh blisters not too bad, not looking like i have to drain them for now. Will tape them up. Hopefull make tomorrows morning session.

PBG is 500/session, 800/day, 3000/week and 10,000/month. So drop in classes are pricy but I think pretty normal for Phuket (or at least Patong and area).

While PBG is not in the middle of nowhere (it is on the hill between Patong and Karon), there isn't a ton of stuff immediately around it. It is one of its charms but isn't so good if you don't have a motorcycle. In terms of accommodations within walking distance, you basically have Secret Cliff (which have a high priced hotel across the street from the gym and slightly cheaper bungalows right above the gym) or On the Hill Resort (about 500m down the road. Where I have always stayed and I love it). Same places have restaurants.

I don't want to talk down "my own gym" but I would say that it isn't great for people who aren't going to rent their own motorcycles. You are either going to take a tuk tuk back and forth to training (200 - 300 baht each way. It's not far but Phuket tuk tuks are crazy expensive) or stay near the gym and pay to go into town. If 3 of you are sharing, it is not a lot of money. I just don't know if you want the hassle if you already like where you are at.

Of course, with motorcycle it is awesome because you train overlooking the ocean, you are away from the bustle, and you can get to Patong or Karon/Kata in 5-10 minutes.

If you are looking to try a different gym right in Patong, you might consider Maximum. "New Maximum" is right on the beach. You can google it. From where you are now, you take the street right by the hospital / police station straight down to the beach. Maximum is just to the right on the road which runs along the beach. On the second floor.

I haven't trained there but I know people who do and they like it. Only complaint I have heard is that it is really hot (based on how the gym is set up, not location). On the flip side it apparently has a full on, western style gym in addition to Muay Thai and Cross Fit classes.

Glad that you are having fun and enjoying your training.
