Chris Pratt to Reprise Star-Lord Role in Marvel Studios' THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER

nQ4HpnI.jpg

Star-Lord and Thor, played by two of Marvel’s famous Chrises, are set to team up in the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder.

Chris Pratt’s Guardians of the Galaxy character is set to make an appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s fourth Thor film, joining a lineup that includes Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman (who returns to the franchise for the first time since 2013’s Thor: The Dark World, reprising her role as Jane Foster), Tessa Thompson (whose Valkyrie became the new ruler of Asgard at the end of Avengers: Endgame) and Christian Bale (whom Variety reported was circling a mysterious role).

Though plot details on Love and Thunder have been kept tightly under wraps, the crossover casting makes logical sense, since Thor was last seen aboard Star-Lord’s spaceship in the closing scenes of Avengers: Endgame and with Pratt’s Star-Lord already set to return for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Vin Diesel, who voices the lovable plant-like alien Groot in the “Guardians” franchise, teased to Comicbook.com in March that the cosmic team would be incorporated in Thor: Love and Thunder.

The fourth Thor film is set to begin production in Australia in January, with Taika Waititi returning as director after piloting Thor: Ragnarok to $854 million at the box office. Jennifer Kaytin Robinson joins Waititi as co-author for the Love and Thunder script. The Oscar-winning filmmaker will also voice the boulder-bodied Kronan warrior Korg for the latest installment. Thor: Love and Thunder is currently set for release in Feb. 2022.

Disney's LILO & STITCH Live-Action Movie in the Works with Jon M. Chu Directing

tFX25Jj.jpg

Jon M. Chu is gearing up for a Hawaiian roller coaster ride. The director behind Crazy Rich Asians is in negotiations to helm Disney’s live-action remake of Lilo & Stitch, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich of Rideback, the banner behind the billion dollar-grossing live-action remake of Aladdin, are producing. Rideback’s Ryan Halprin is executive producing.

A search for a scribe to work with Chu is now underway. Mike Van Waes wrote the current draft for the project, which has not been greenlit and is still in development.

The original film was written and directed by Dean DeBlois and Chris Sanders, who later found acclaim with How to Train Your Dragon.

The Hawaii-centric story told of the bond formed between a lonely human girl named Lilo and a dog-like alien named Stitch, who is engineered to be a force of destruction. Pursuing aliens, social workers and the idea of the bond of a family all figure into the proceedings.

While not a massive success by modern box-office standards, the well-regarded movie was a bright spot in a down period of Disney's animation history and launched several direct-to-video sequels as well as several television series. The characters are now among the most sought-after Disney personalities in terms of merchandising.

It is unclear whether Stitch will be released theatrically or on Disney+.

Chu is finding a home at Disney as he recently boarded the Willow series, made by the studio’s Lucasfilm arm, as director and exec producer. The filmmaker, whose Asians grossed over $238 million in 2018, also exec produced and directed episodes of Apple series Home Before Dark. In the can Chu has In the Heights, the adaptation of the Lin-Manuel Miranda musical that Warner Bros. will release in 2021.

Then I found out Guy Ritchie's not directing. Sad.

DEADPOOL 3 Moving Forward at Marvel Studios with Bob's Burgers Writers Penning the Script

iov8G12.jpg

Deadpool 3 is moving forward at Marvel Studios. Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin, known for the animated series Bob's Burgers, are penning a script for the Ryan Reynolds sequel, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

This is the first Marvel Studios project to use characters now available to it following Disney's purchase of 21st Century Fox, which gave Marvel access to mutants (including Deadpool and the X-Men), as well as the Fantastic Four. While it has long been assumed the X-Men — which starred Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender since 2011 — would totally be rebooted, Reynolds and Deadpool had been expected to make the jump to Disney.

Sisters Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin won an outstanding animated program Emmy for Bob's Burgers in 2017, and the official Deadpool Twitter account welcomed them with some custom art. The duo are also the co-creators of the Fox animated series The Great North.

Though the crass tone of Deadpool doesn't match the more safe for work Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, Disney's Bob Iger has stated multiple times that Deadpool could remain R-rated at Disney.

The Deadpool films stand as the top-grossing X-Men films of all time, with the 2016 original earning $783.1 million, and the 2018 sequel bringing in $785.8 million worldwide. Frequent Reynolds collaborators Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick penned the scripts for the first two films.

New PREDATOR Movie in the Works from 10 Cloverfield Lane Director at 20th Century Studios

ol9FiGK.jpg

Disney’s 20th Century Studios is developing a fifth Predator movie with 10 Cloverfield Lane director Dan Trachtenberg. The script is being written by Patrick Aison, whose producer-writer credits include the series Kingdom, Jack Ryan and Treadstone.

They are keeping the plot line under wraps for the moment, but Deadline is told it won’t swing back to the developments in the most recent film.

The four Predator movies earned $443 million worldwide, with John Davis producing each. The original Predator was released in 1987 and directed by John McTiernan. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Carl Weathers and Jesse Ventura starred as commandos attempting to rescue hostages while being stalked in a jungle in Central America by a fearsome extraterrestrial, played by Kevin Peter Hall.

Trachtenberg made his directorial debut with the 2016 sci-fi thriller 10 Cloverfield Lane, which earned him a Directors Guild of America nomination for best first-time director on a feature.

Trachtenberg himself has chimed in and it sounds like he wasn’t ready for this news to become public just yet:

"This was meant to be a surprise. Been working on this for almost 4 years now. I am very sad that what we had in store for how you could discover this movie will no longer happen. It’s a bummer. But also...YAY!"

Mads Mikkelsen Announced to Replace Johnny Depp in FANTASTIC BEASTS 3

E4fUdgX.jpg

Mads Mikkelsen is set to play evil wizard Gellert Grindelwald, replacing original star Johnny Depp, in Fantastic Beasts 3, Warner Bros. announced on Wednesday. Depp quit the franchise after being asked to resign by Warner Bros. earlier this month in the wake of his libel case in the U.K.

The latest installment in the Fantastic Beasts series is currently in production at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden, outside of London. No scenes will need to be reshot, despite Depp leaving the film and his role being recast, an individual with knowledge of the situation told TheWrap. The film has, however, been delayed to the summer of 2022 after most recently being scheduled for release in November 2021.

Eddie Redmayne stars in the Fantastic Beasts franchise as wizard Newt Scamander, alongside Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Jude Law and Ezra Miller. David Yates is returning to direct the third film, based on a screenplay from Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling inspired by her book Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

Fantastic Beasts 3 will now open in theaters on July 15, 2022, one week after Captain Marvel 2. The most recent film in the franchise, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, opened in October 2018 and made $654.8 million worldwide.

Mads Mikkelsen most recently wrapped production on Chaos Walking, directed by Doug Liman.

We need to talk. As a kid, I had the original first Clifford book.

It was a simple premise:
Emily Elizabeth's family lived in a tiny apartment in the city. Her neighbor's dog had a litter of puppies. Neighbor said she could have one. Emily Elizabeth chose the tiny runt. Neighbor (and parents) discouraged her from getting the runt because it was too sick it may not make it through the night. Emily Elizabeth loved the runt and took him in. It was her love that made him big. Then, they moved to the country because he was too big for the apartment. The End.

No need to change that.

No magic from an elderly British man.

No single mom with an wacky and immature uncle.

No road trip full of misunderstandings and pratfalls for the wacky uncle.

Arrrrr.....

Peter Dinklage to Star in THE TOXIC AVENGER Reboot from Legendary Pictures

K36iwgI.jpg

Peter Dinklage is breathing new life into a 1980s cult property. The Game of Thrones alum is joining The Toxic Avenger, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

Legendary is behind the reboot of the 1984 film from schlock movie house Troma Entertainment. The original film centered on a mild-mannered man named Melvin, who becomes disfigured after falling into a vat of toxic waste, and goes on to fight bad guys under the superhero name Toxie. Toxic Avenger went on to be Troma's biggest hit, and the character became a mascot for the company.

Macon Blair, known for the Sundance film I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore, will write and direct the project, described as a contemporary reimagining that will subvert the superhero genre a la Deadpool (2016). Troma founders Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz, director of the original, will produce the new outing.

Dinklage starred as Tyron Lannister from 2011-19 on HBO's Game of Thrones, earning four Emmys and a Golden Globe for the role. He had a small role in Avengers: Infinity War (2018), and played an antagonist in X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014). He is currently in production on director Joe Wright's Cyrano.

Jason Statham Eyes Eastern Promises Follow-Up SMALL DARK LOOK with Martin Zandvliet to Direct

YPLQcMI.jpg

It’s been almost 15 years but a follow-up to David Cronenberg’s gritty crime thriller Eastern Promises is making strides to the screen.

Jason Statham is circling to star what is now titled Small Dark Look, described as being set in the same Russian mob world as the acclaimed 2007 film that starred Viggo Mortensen.

Danish filmmaker Martin Zandvliet, who was nominated for a best foreign film Oscar for his drama Land of Mine, is now on board to direct.

Steven Knight, who wrote Promises (and also created shows such as Peaky Blinders), wrote the script. Loglines are being kept hidden in a steamy bathhouse.

A sequel or follow up has been in the works almost since the original was released. But in the intervening years both Cronenberg and Statham have moved on.

The trick now is nailing down Statham. The actor has several on his docket for 2021, including a reteaming with Guy Ritchie for an untitled thriller, a sequel to aquatic monster movie The Meg, and a possible Hobbs & Shaw 2, among others.

Warner Bros. Will Release All Their 2021 Films on HBO Max and in Theaters Simultaneously

Warner Bros. is plotting a sweeping response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, which has shuttered movie theaters around the country. After announcing that Wonder Woman 1984 will go to HBO Max as well as theaters Dec. 25, the studio has laid out a similar path for its 2021 slate amid uncertainty about when moviegoing will get back to normal.

The studio announced Thursday day-and-date releases for its 17-film slate, which will hit HBO Max for a one-month window that starts the same day they will be available in U.S. theaters. The studio's 2021 slate includes projects such as:
  • The Suicide Squad
  • The Matrix 4
  • Dune
  • Godzilla vs. Kong
  • Space Jam: A New Legacy
  • Little Things
  • Judas and the Black Messiah
  • Tom & Jerry
  • Mortal Kombat
  • Those Who Wish Me Dead
  • The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It
  • In The Heights
  • Reminiscence
  • Malignant
  • The Many Saints of Newark
  • King Richard
  • Cry Macho
The unprecedented move is likely to catch theater owners off guard and upsets a model that has been in place for decades. Warner Bros. stresses that these are pandemic-only rules, but once something is broken, can you really put it back together again? This also raises serious concerns about the landscape of moviegoing in 2021.

Oscar Isaac to Star as Solid Snake in Sony's METAL GEAR SOLID Live-Action Movie

Uv0wlwZ.jpg

Sony’s long-awaited Metal Gear Solid adaptation looks to have gained some major momentum as sources tell Deadline that Oscar Isaac is attached to play Solid Snake in the film, which is currently in development at Sony Pictures with Jordan Vogt-Roberts on board to direct.

The film is based on the Metal Gear Solid video game created by Hideo Kojima and published by Konami. The script is written by Derek Connolly. Avi Arad is producing. Peter Kang is the executive overseeing for the studio.

The game was first launched on PlayStation in 1998 and follows Snake, a soldier who infiltrates a nuclear weapons facility to neutralize the terrorist threat from Foxhound, a renegade special forces unit. The game has received acclaimed on many fronts, but its storytelling that has a cinematic feel always made it seem like a movie adaptation was inevitable.

Given Isaac’s extremely busy schedule, a production start date is still unknown, but his involvement makes this property a high priority for the studio going forward. As for Isaac, Metal Gear Solid could give him another major franchise, having already starred in the most recent Star Wars franchise.

Even as the industry slowly gets back into production due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Isaac has been busy setting his future slate in recent months. He is set to star in HBO’s Scenes From a Marriage opposite Jessica Chastain, followed by playing the title role in Marvel’s Moon Knight for Disney+.

Isaac will next be seen in the much-anticipated reboot of Dune and Paul Schrader’s The Card Counter. He is also set to star in and produce the adaptation of Brian K. Vaughn’s Ex Machina comic retitled The Great Machine and star in Barry Levinson’s Francis and The Godfather, alongside Jake Gyllenhaal.
