Simon Kinberg to Write and Produce BATTLESTAR GALACTICA Movie for Universal

t5cxqA0.jpg

The Cylons are on the march. Simon Kinberg has signed on to write and produce Battlestar Galactica, Universal’s long-gestating feature adaptation of its sci-fi TV franchise.

Kinberg, who was the main architect of almost a decade’s worth of X-Men movies, now has a new franchise universe to work with and will be starting from the ground up in telling the tale of humans on faraway planets on the run from a race of intelligent machines bent on wiping them out.

He will join producer Dylan Clark, who has long shepherded the project, which has attracted filmmakers such as Bryan Singer and Francis Lawrence over the years.

"Battlestar Galactica is one of the holy grails in science fiction, and I couldn't be more excited about bringing something new to the franchise, while honoring what's made it so iconic and enduring," said Kinberg in a statement. "I'm so grateful that Dylan and my partners at Universal have trusted me with this incredible universe."

Galactica was the short-lived but impactful television series created by Glen A. Larson in the post-Star Wars glow that aired in the late 1970s. The conceit was the idea of human colonies on distant galactic shores who fall pray to destructive machines known as Cylons. The survivors flee on starships and , led by the Galactica and her heroic crew, try to find a mythic human colony known as Earth.

Characters included the upstanding Commander Adama, his son Apollo, the brash Starbuck, the traitorous Baltar, plus Boomer, Athena and Cassiopeia. The humans zipped in fighter ships known as Vipers while the Cylons’ ships were called Raiders.

The show was revived and re-imagined for the post-9-11 world as a thought-provoking, politically charged series that ran to great acclaim on Syfy from 2004 to 2009. A reboot of the show is currently in development with Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail executive producing.

Kinberg is gearing up for the release of The 355, a female-centric spy thriller he co-wrote and directed. The movie, which features Jessica Chastain, Lupita Nyong’o, Penelope Cruz, Diane Kruger and Fan Bingbing, is currently scheduled to be released by Universal on Jan. 15.

And while Kinberg is taking steps to advance as a helmer, he hasn’t forgotten his writing roots. He created and co-wrote the Apple TV+ series Invasion, which is currently in production. He is also working with director Jason Bateman on his spec script Here Comes the Flood for Netflix and recently sold an untitled Idris Elba-starring, Africa-set spy romance project to Apple.

That has potential, but I hope they have the right people behind it.

How does Kinberg get to keep working on such high-profile projects? His track record is mediocre with a pile of forgettable stuff, a handful of garbage, and one good movie (which, given his record with the other entries in the series, was a complete fluke).

Yeah, looking at his track record, I am not overly confident in this project.

Sean Connery, Oscar Winner and James Bond Star, Passes Away at 90

sAZMo4j.jpg

Sean Connery, the rugged, sardonically assured Scotsman who won an Academy Award and portrayed James Bond seven times, proving to the world that nobody could do it better, has died. He was 90.

Connery’s death was reported by the BBC on Saturday.

James Bond producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli said in a statement “We are devastated by the news of the passing of Sir Sean Connery. He was and shall always be remembered as the original James Bond whose indelible entrance into cinema history began when he announced those unforgettable words, 'The name’s Bond... James Bond' He revolutionized the world with his gritty and witty portrayal of the sexy and charismatic secret agent. He is undoubtedly largely responsible for the success of the film series and we shall be forever grateful to him.”

A man with the Midas touch when it came to Agent 007, Connery laid down the Bond blueprint by starring in the first five United Artists movies to feature Ian Fleming's British superspy: Dr. No (1962), From Russia With Love (1963) — said to be the actor's personal favorite — Goldfinger (1964), Thunderball (1965) and You Only Live Twice (1967). That fulfilled his original contract.

After Connery rebuffed an offer of $1 million and said he was finished with Bond, George Lazenby stepped in to star in On Her Majesty's Secret Service(1969), but the Australian actor was one and done. Connery then accepted a then-record $1.25 million salary — plus a promise that UA would fund two non-Bond films for him — to return as 007 in Diamonds Are Forever (1971).

"Fed up to here with the whole Bond bit," Connery spurned a $5 million payday to star in Live and Let Die (1973), handing over the reins to Englishman Roger Moore. But Connery would portray 007 one last time, at age 52, in the aptly titled (and unofficial Bond film) Never Say Never Again (1983) at Warner Bros.

Asked to account for the phenomenal success of the Bond films, Connery told Playboy in a November 1965 interview that "timing had a lot to do with it."

"Bond came on the scene after the war, at a time when people were fed up with rationing and drab times and utility clothes and a predominately gray color in life," he said. "Along comes this character who cuts right through all that like a very hot knife through butter, with his clothing and his cars and his wine and his women.

"Bond, you see, is a kind of present-day survival kit. Men would like to imitate him — or at least his success — and women are excited by him."

The early movies spawned a whole industry of copycat spy films (like The Ipcress File and Our Man Flint) and television shows (The Man From U.N.C.L.E., the spoof Get Smart) with intriguing international storylines.

Connery always resisted becoming a one-note actor and starred in a wide array of films, often playing a no-nonsense, man of action — like the tough, Irish cop who mentors Kevin Costner's Eliot Ness in The Untouchables (1987), directed by Brian De Palma. That role earned him his Oscar.

The handsome star also starred for Alfred Hitchcock in Marnie (1964) and for Sidney Lumet in the physically demanding The Hill (1965), The Anderson Tapes (1971), The Offence (1973), Murder on the Orient Express (1974) and Family Business (1989).

He was memorable in sweeping adventure tales like John Huston's The Man Who Would Be King (1975), The Wind and the Lion (1975) and, as a famous archeologist's father, in Steven Spielberg's Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989). And he portrayed the legend of Sherwood Forest opposite Audrey Hepburn in Richard Lester's medieval romance Robin and Marian (1976).

Connery's body of work also includes the bizarre Zardoz (1974), A Bridge Too Far (1977), Terry Gilliam's Time Bandits (1981), Outland (1981) and The Hunt for Red October (1990).

More recently, he starred in Rising Sun (1993), Dragonheart (1996), The Rock (1996), The Avengers (1998), Entrapment (1999), Finding Forrester (2000) and, his final feature, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003).

That dude was a stud who could still believably play off being the leading male in a film role in his 80's.

Nicolas Cage to Star in Sci-Fi Martial Arts Movie JIU JITSU

mYSjgNE.jpg

Nicolas Cage is set to topline writer-director-producer Dimitri Logothetis’ sci-fi martial arts movie Jiu Jitsu. He will star alongside Alain Moussi, who headlined the last two Kickboxer movies, in which Logothetis was also involved.

Based on the comic book of the same name, which Logothetis wrote with Jim McGrath, the film features Moussi as a Jiu Jitsu fighter who every six years must face off against an alien invader, Brax. Cage’s character teams up with him in a battle to defeat Brax.

The feature will be produced by Logothetis and Martin Barab with Highland Film Group handling worldwide sales, which are currently underway at Hong Kong Filmart.

“After we successfully reintroduced the Kickboxer franchise to a new generation of martial arts fans with the sixth and seventh entries in the series, we set out to up the ante with a sci-fi martial arts franchise that could bring the same kind of intensity and longevity to a new arena,” Logothetis said of the project.

Cage was recently seen in the psychedelic action-horror film Mandy and heard in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Moussi will be seen in the upcoming Kickboxer: Armageddon. Logothetis directed 2018’s Kickboxer: Retaliation and the upcoming Kickboxer: Armageddon.

Modern-Day Reboot of SCORPION KING in the Works from Dwayne Johnson and Universal

rCNOay3.jpg

Dwayne Johnson's The Scorpion King is looking to reign once again. Universal is developing a reboot of the 2002 film, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. Screenwriter Jonathan Herman, who earned an Oscar nomination for Straight Outta Compton, is penning the script for Johnson and Dany Garcia’s Seven Bucks Productions.

Scorpion King was a spinoff of Brendan Fraser's The Mummy series, which saw Johnson's Scorpion King serve as an antagonist of 2001's The Mummy Returns. The next year, Johnson led his own film, a prequel that told the story of the desert warrior Mathayus. Scorpion King earned $178.7 million globally and launched Johnson as a leading man.

This version is described as a contemporary take not set in the distant past like the original. Johnson will not reprise his role as the titular character, but may appear in the film in another capacity.

“The Scorpion King was my very first role ever on the silver screen and I’m honored and excited to reimagine and deliver this cool mythology to a whole new generation.” Said Johnson in a statement. “I wouldn’t have had the career I’m lucky enough to have had it not been for The Scorpion King and I’m thrilled that we at Seven Bucks Productions can help create those same opportunities for other hard working actors today. I believe Jonathan Herman will put in the hard work to deliver a fantastic script for our global audience.”

“The original Scorpion King was a crucial catalyst helping to catapult us into the world of film,” added Garcia. “To be able to now produce the next iteration as part of our Seven Bucks Productions slate is a special, full circle moment, a testament to what we have been fortunate enough to build for our audience and ultimately a humble reminder of the timeless value of authentic storytelling.”

Modern day scorpion king sounds pretty damn dumb

things no one asked for or needed.

The original was dumb as fuck as it was

Maybe it's more the Rock than Dwayne Johnson. Like, the need to avenge a loss type situation.

Yeah. I liked it because I was young and fascinated with swords/sorcery type stuff (still am) but now realize it was fairly bad. I'm still into fantasy for sure but good fantasy. I reckon this won't be good.
