dMuJIXW.jpg

Sarah Shahi has joined the cast of New Line and DC Films highly anticipated Black Adam starring Dwayne Johnson in the title role. Aldis Hodge is also on board to play Hawkman with Noah Centineo set to play Atom Smasher.

Jaume Collet-Serra, who also directed Johnson alongside Emily Blunt in Disney’s Jungle Cruise, will helm. Johnson, Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia of Seven Bucks Productions are producing with Beau Flynn of FlynnPictureCo. FlynnPictureCo’s Scott Sheldon will serve as executive producer.

The character is one of DC’s most popular anti-heroes and plot details are being kept tightly under wraps. It is the second New Line/DC film following 2019’s critical and commercial smash hit Shazam!. The two characters, Shazam and Black Adam, are arch rivals in the DC Universe.

In the film, Shahi will play a university professor and freedom fighter leading the resistance in Kahndaq.

Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani wrote the latest draft. Adam Sztykiel wrote the previous draft.

Shahi is currently shooting the Netflix series Sex/Life and received critical acclaim for her performance in the Showtime series City On A Hill. TV credits include The Rookie, Reverie, Person of Interest, The L Word and Fairly Legal.

Leonardo DiCaprio, Meryl Streep, Jennifer Lawrence to Star in Adam McKay Comedy DON'T LOOK UP

Leonardo DiCaprio, Meryl Streep, Jonah Hill, Himesh Patel and Timothée Chalamet will star opposite Jennifer Lawrence in Don’t Look Up, Adam McKay’s comedy at Netflix that is shaping up to be a major talent tsunami.

Cate Blanchett and Rob Morgan are already on board with Lawrence and, just as he did with The Big Short, McKay is using the stylistic format of cameos to populate his feature with bold-faced names. Ariana Grande, Kid Cudi, Matthew Perry and Tomer Sisley are among those lined up to make appearances.

McKay is directing and wrote the script that centers on two low-level scientists who, upon discovering that a meteor will strike the Earth in six months, go on a media tour to try to warn the world but find an unreceptive and unbelieving populace. Lawrence and DiCaprio will play the two scientists.

The movie is heading toward a Nov. 19 start of shooting in Boston. McKay is also producing via his label, Hyperobject, along with partner Kevin Messick.

Securing DiCaprio is a major coup as the actor is juggling another commitment, Martin Scorsese’s period crime drama Killers of the Flower Moon. Look Up also puts him back in frame with Hill, with whom he acted in 2013’s The Wolf of Wall Street.

Streep, who appeared in last year’s Oscar-winning Little Women, next stars in The Prom, Ryan Murphy’s musical comedy that also features Nicole Kidman and Keegan Michael-Key in the cast. The movie debuts on Netflix on Dec. 11.

Patel broke through to international audiences with Danny Boyle’s Beatles-centric Yesterday. He is also currently on screen in Christopher Nolan’s Tenet.

Michael B. Jordan to Produce DC's STATIC SHOCK Live-Action Movie

xu4nkuS.jpg

Michael B. Jordan is boarding Warner Bros. and DC’s Static Shock as a producer. Jordan will join Reginald Hudlin on the feature project that was first revealed during August's DC FanDome event. He will produce via Outlier Society, his Warners-based banner.

The move jolts the project up a few kilowatts, giving the cult hero some firepower as it goes into active development.

“I’m proud to be a part of building a new universe centered around black superheroes; our community deserves that,” said Jordan in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. “Outlier Society is committed to bringing to life diverse comic book content across all platforms and we are excited to partner with Reggie and Warner Bros on this initial step.”

Outlier will be in the creative center of the Static feature and for Jordan, a comic book fan, this is an opportunity for not only for some world-building but to be directly involved in franchise-building. Should the first movie spark a hit, a multi-platform franchise could be born.

The project centers on Static, who first appeared in 1993's Static no. 1 via Milestone Comics, a now-defunct company founded by Black writers and artists to help make comics a more inclusive space and which had distribution through DC.

A decade later the hero was revived for the Static Shock animated series, centering on Virgil Hawkins, a teenager who transforms into a superhero who gains electromagnetic powers after being exposed to strange gas. The series was noteworthy for being the rare animated show to be headlined by a Black character. The hero made his way to the mainstream DC Comics universe in 2008.

DC is relaunching Milestone with Hudlin, now a partner in the label, at the center of it. He is writing an all-new Static Shock digital comic series beginning in Feb. 2021, as well as an additional Static Shock graphic novel by Hudlin, with art by Kyle Baker. A series reviving Icon and Rocket, by Hudlin and Milestone founder Denys Cowan, are also in the works.

Movie theaters just re-opened in my area, I went and saw Tenet and New Mutants. I thought both of them were better than the general critics consensus. Tenet was the kind of action spectacle-Nolan film we were advertised, and the technical work on it was amazing, really next level. Nolan likes to create complex puzzles and solve them, that's just how he likes to tell stories. I think it's a little weird critics decided that wasn't cool this time.

New Mutants reminded me of Buffy the Vampire Slayer or It. Kids and scary stuff, works because of the relationships. Really grateful I got to go see a couple of movies.

New POWER RANGERS Movie and TV Series in the Works from End of the F***ing World Creator

2DIXEgK.jpg

The Power Rangers are morphing again. Jonathan Entwistle, the creator behind Netflix series It’s the End of the F---ing World, has been entrusted to engineer and shepherd the next series of screen adaptations of Power Rangers, the colorful Hasbro superhero property.

But while other recent efforts have focused primarily on the big screen, the new initiative will see Entwistle overseeing, and directing, both film and television adaptations.

The move comes as eOne, the production banner acquired by Hasbro in late 2019, becomes more active in the development and the production of adaptations of Hasbro-based brands. A Power Rangers feature was previously in development by Entwistle at Paramount, but now the reins have been taken by eOne while Entwistle's involvement will deepen.

Entwistle will act as a conductor of a connected story universe that will bridge multiple platforms.

“This is an unbelievable opportunity to deliver new Power Rangers to both new and existing generations of awaiting and adoring fans. We’ll bring the spirit of analog into the future, harnessing the action and storytelling that made this brand a success,” said Entwistle.

Power Rangers was a ’90s TV series and global marketing franchise, initially called The Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers, that used footage from a Japanese children’s show. The premise involved a group of kids who become superheroes, each with his or her own color-coordinated outfit and matching giant dinosaur robot. The show first aired on Fox Kids, then on the Disney-owned channel in the 2000s. A movie also hit theaters in 1995.

In 2017, Lionsgate produced and released a feature that rebooted the title, making it less kid-friendly and giving it a more brooding YA edge. The pic failed at the box office, grossing only $142 million worldwide on a budget of around $100 million, and plans for a series of films were scrapped.

Entwistle created End of the F---ing World and co-created the recent seriesI’m Not Okay With This. Both series centered on teens coming to grips with growing up and were praised for their writing, with the former winning a Peabody and a BAFTA TV Award.

Now, 500 years later, that same evil has returned and it’s up to a lone warrior, Raya, to track down the legendary last dragon to restore the fractured land and its divided people. However, along her journey, she’ll learn that it’ll take more than a dragon to save the world—it’s going to take trust and teamwork as well. Opens in U.S. theaters on March 2021.

Sigh, guess I have to see this 30 times from September till December next year... first-world-toddlers-at-home problems...

Looks good though (aside from stereotypical, borderline racist intro music), animation is great.

Oh god, power rangers! That brings up so many memories...

Jared Leto's Joker to Join Additional Photography for JUSTICE LEAGUE Snyder Cut

Im9adp7.jpg

Zack Snyder’s new Justice League cut is getting some killer laughs. Jared Leto, who played classic DC villain The Joker in 2016’s Suicide Squad, has joined the additional photography shooting for the “Snyder Cut,” the filmmaker’s definitive version of the 2017 superhero movie he was forced to exit and he never saw through completion, multiple sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.

The project, officially titled Zack Snyder's Justice League, is being overseen by HBO Max, which is financing the new round of shooting and the completion of the many unfinished scenes, and will air as a four-episode event series next year.

Shooting is currently underway with Ben Affleck, Ray Fisher, and Amber Heard among those involved on top of Leto. It is unclear which other actors are involved.

Even as the shoot rolls ahead, two producers who were involved with the theatrical movie are quietly moving to the side. Jon Berg and Geoff Johns, then-studio executives who oversaw the movie and the reshoot by Joss Whedon that was meant to salvage the failed movie, will not be receiving producer credits on the Snyder Cut, sources say.

Sources close to Berg and Johns have confirmed the duo’s intention to remove their names from the Snyder Cut since they did not work on this version and are no longer studio executives. The sources also say the move pays respect to Snyder’s creative vision and the additional photography shoot.

It is unclear when Berg's and Johns' segue began. One source said the move began months ago and is unconnected to comments made by Fisher, the actor who played Cyborg in the movie and who has for months accused the two of enabling abuse and misconduct by Whedon on the set of the 2017 reshoots. After vocal and public outbursts on social media even as late as September, Fisher has been less incendiary and posting less frequently.

Leto boarding the Snyder Cut is noteworthy as the character did not appear in the original 2017 movie and raises questions as to how much new content could be included in Snyder’s super-version of Justice League.

It also ties the new cut to Suicide Squad, the all-star DC-based movie that saw Margot Robbie break out as fan-favorite character Harley Quinn and which saw Leto portray Joker as a love-obsessed and glittery crime lord. The picture was exec produced by Snyder and his wife and partner, Deborah Snyder and was meant to tie into an overall DC Cinematic Universe that Snyder had been shepherding.
