Bill Pullman, Rick Moranis, Keke Palmer and Lewis Pullman to Star in SPACEBALLS Sequel; Set for 2027 Release

sIUgHDi.png

Bill Pullman and Rick Moranis are set to reprise their respective roles as Lone Starr and Dark Helmet in the new Spaceballs movie from Amazon MGM Studios, with Keke Palmer (One of Them Days) joining the cast, sources tell Deadline.

Amazon declined to comment, and character details for Palmer are under wraps, as is the sequel’s plot. Also newly aboard in an undisclosed role is Pullman’s son, rising star Lewis Pullman (Thunderbolts*), as THR was first to report this afternoon.

The addition of Moranis, though is particularly striking, as the actor hasn’t been seen much on screen for decades. As announced this morning, the original film’s director and star, Mel Brooks, will also feature in the cast once again, reprising his role as Yogurt. Slated for release in theaters in 2027, the film has been described by those who have not yet read the script as “A Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Film.”

Josh Greenbaum (Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar) will direct from a script by Benji Samit, Dan Hernandez, and Josh Gad, as announced in June of last year. Gad is also expected to star and will produce alongside Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer and Jeb Brody, Brooks, and Greenbaum, with Kevin Salter, Adam Merims, Samit, and Hernandez exec producing.

Released by MGM in 1987, the original Spaceballs is an iconic send-up of the sci-fi genre, which took inspiration from the Star Wars franchise and other classics like 2001: A Space Odyssey. The plot revolves around the evil Dark Helmet (Moranis) and President Skroob (Brooks), who attempt to steal the atmosphere of the peaceful planet Druidia, only to be thwarted by the hero Lone Starr (Pullman), his sidekick Barf (John Candy), and the Druish princess Vespa (Daphne Zuniga). Others in the cast included Joan Rivers and Dick Van Patten. The film grossed just over $38.1 worldwide but has endured over the years as a cult classic.

Otherwise best known for turns in iconic works like Independence Day and David Lynch’s Lost Highway, Pullman has most recently been seen starring in series like The Sinner, as well as films including The High Note and Dark Waters. Upcoming, he has the Duffer Brothers’ Netflix series The Boroughs, A24’s Famous opposite Zac Efron, and more.

An icon of the ’80s and ’90s, Moranis rose to fame with roles in Ghostbusters, Little Shop of Horrors, the Honey, I Shrunk the Kids films and more, after writing and starring in famed Canadian sketch series SCTV. Famously, he for the most part stepped away from acting in the late ’90s, focusing on raising his children following the passing of his wife, costume designer Ann Belsky. Most recently, he teamed with Ryan Reynolds on a 2020 ad for Mint Mobile.

Palmer is coming off of success with One of Them Days, a TriStar buddy comedy where she stars opposite SZA, which recently got a sequel set up for development. Next up, she’ll be seen in The Pickup, Amazon’s heist comedy out August 6, opposite Eddie Murphy; Aziz Ansari’s Lionsgate comedy Good Fortune, out October 17; and Boots Riley’s Neon pic I Love Boosters.

It might be better than the Star Wars sequel trilogy

I'm both hopeful and VERY pessimistic about this. I'm also worried that Brooks might not make it to the end.

Tom Rhys Harries Lands Lead Role in DC Studios' CLAYFACE Movie with James Watkins as the Director

8qTQOjC.png

When it came to casting the lead in DC Studios’ next big movie, Clayface, the studio went with a fresh face, that being Welsh actor Tom Rhys Harries.

The actor from the Uma Thurman Apple TV series Suspicion and such movies as Uberto Pasolini’s The Return (starring Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche), the Gerard Butler action title Kandahar and Guy Ritchie’s The Gentleman landed the role from a competitive list of British thespians, i.e. 28 Years Later‘s Jack O’Connell, Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes‘ Tom Blyth, The White Lotus’ Leo Woodall and 1917‘s George MacKay.

The movie, from Speak No Evil director James Watkins, is the next big project for James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Studios after next summer’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, scheduled for Sept. 11, 2026. Clayface will be shooting at Warner Bros Leavesden studio in the U.K.

Clayface is shape-shifting villain in the Batman comics and got his introduction as part of Detective Comics #40 in June 1940. The original Clayface was a moderately successful actor who adopted the identity of a character he’d portrayed in a horror pic after turning to crime. Clayface has a body seemingly made out of clay and has appeared over the years in various films, series, animated works, video games and other forms of media.

The actor was born in Cardiff, Wales and attended The Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama. In the theatre, Rhys Harries made his West End stage debut in 2013 in Jez Butterworth’s Mojo opposite Colin Morgan, Rupert Grint, and Ben Whishaw. The actor also starred in the Netflix Álex Pina created series White Lines.

Producing Clayface are Gunn and Safran as well as The Batman filmmaker Matt Reeves and Lynn Harris. Chantal Nong is executive producer. The Life of Chuck filmmaker Mike Flanagan wrote the first draft of Clayface with additional drafts by Oscar nominated The Wings of a Dove and Drive scribe Hossein Amini.

Jon Bernthal's Punisher to Make His MCU Movie Debut in SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY

cgHTy86FC9N2t6dzaMzNNG-1200-80.jpg

Jon Bernthal has appeared in several Marvel television series as the stone-cold vigilante known as the Punisher, even headlining his own series.

Now he’s taking his guns to the big screen.

Bernthal has joined Tom Holland in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the latest Spider-Man movie from Sony and Marvel. Destin Daniel Cretton is directing the feature, which will shoot in England this summer and has a July 31, 2026, release date.

Much of the movie remains shrouded in mystery. Movie rumor websites have listed upwards of a dozen possible villains, from crime bosses to alien symbiotes, who could appear in the feature, as well as a couple of different versions of the Hulk.

The only thing clear at this stage is that Zendaya and Jacob Batalon are reprising their roles as MJ and best friend Ned, although how substantial those roles will be remains unclear. And Stranger Things star Sadie Sink is the big new addition so far. The story takes place after the events of the previous movie, Spider-Man: No Way Home, in which the entire world knew Peter Parker was Spider-Man and then had that knowledge erased.

Having Bernthal as the Punisher seems to point to a slightly more grounded angle on the story as the character hails from the gritty street corner of Marvel’s universe and, in the comics at least, uses fists, knives and guns to tussle with bad guys, rather than spells or fancy tech. But hey, having him square off against a rampaging Hulk could be fun, too.

Bernthal first showed up as vigilante Frank Castle, aka the Punisher, in Marvel’s Daredevil Netflix series, then starred in his own series that ran for two seasons. He recently returned for a few episodes in Daredevil: Born Again on Disney+.

Marvel is betting on more Punisher and Bernthal in the months and years to come. The character is set to return for season two of Born Again and Marvel is bringing Bernthal back for a Punisher stand-alone feature for Disney+. Bernthal is co-writing the latter. Curiously, one nonnegotiable he had for his return to Daredevil was maintaining the character’s violent, R-rated feel. It will be interesting to see how that translates into the more kid-friendly tone of the Spider-Man movies.

Bernthal and Holland have a charmed history together when it comes to Marvel. The duo were working on the 2017 feature Pilgrimage when prepping to audition for their Marvel roles. The actors helped each other with their audition tapes.

Dune Filmmaker Denis Villeneuve to Direct the Next James Bond Movie for Amazon MGM Studios

GettyImages-2038747157.jpg

Denis Villeneuve is going from Dune to 007. The filmmaker has been tapped to direct the next James Bond movie, the first from Amazon MGM Studios.

Tanya Lapointe, Villeneuve’s artistic partner and wife, will serve as an executive produver. As previously announced, Amy Pascal and David Heyman will serve as producers.

“Some of my earliest movie-going memories are connected to 007. I grew up watching James Bond films with my father, ever since Dr. No with Sean Connery. I’m a die-hard Bond fan. To me, he’s sacred territory. I intend to honor the tradition and open the path for many new missions to come,” said Villeneuve. “This is a massive responsibility, but also, incredibly exciting for me and a huge honor.”

Pascal and Heyman added, “Denis Villeneuve has been in love with James Bond movies since he was a little boy. It was always his dream to make this movie, and now it’s ours, too. We are lucky to be in the hands of this extraordinary filmmaker.”

Bond is one of the most sought-after franchises for filmmakers. Reportedly, directors who met for this film also included Edward Berger, Edgar Wright and Paul King.

Villeneuve was last in theaters with Dune: Part 2, which earned over $700 million at the box office and several Oscar nominations, including best picture, winning best sound and best visual effects. Currently, he is in prep on the third Dune film, which is scheduled to shoot this summer.

It’s unclear when Bond will begin production, but the search is underway for a screenwriter who will work with Villeneuve to bring the newest incarnation of the secret agent to the big screen.

The new Bond will mark the franchise’s 26th title and the follow-up to 2021’s No Time to Die, which was directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga and served as Daniel Craig’s swan song as 007. This film will also mark the first Bond outing following Amazon’s $8.45 billion takeover of 007’s long-standing backer MGM.

In 2022, Amazon acquired MGM, which allowed the tech/entertainment company the rights to distribute all future James Bond films. But, until this year, there was little movement due to the impasse between Amazon executives and the longtime shepherds of all things Bond, Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli. In February, it was announced that Wilson and Broccoli were pursuing a deal with Amazon that would allow the studio to control the creative on future productions.

If anything, it will be gorgeous to look at.

Reminds me that I’ve still haven’t watched Craig’s final one.

Looking forward to this.

I am very skeptical of Amazon have creative control over the franchise.

But, I have to admit that Barbare Broccoli would never have been willing to cede enough creative control to get a director like Denis V.

Aaron Sorkin to Write and Direct THE SOCIAL NETWORK PART II Inspired by WSJ's The Facebook Files

the-social-network-2000-1cc38972d01241a5b2f89e4412a0ceb5.jpg

After teasing a potential sequel to his Oscar-winning drama The Social Network for years, Aaron Sorkin looks to have found an angle to tackle for his follow-up film. Sources tell Deadline that Sorkin has been set to direct The Social Network Part II for Sony Pictures.

Insiders say that while it’s being called part two, it’s not a straight sequel but rather a follow-up to the original movie that explored the origins of what would become the world’s biggest social media platform. The new film project is in development with Todd Black, Peter Rice, Sorkin and Stuart Besser producing.

Sorkin’s original screenplay for the new movie explores the story behind the Wall Street Journal‘s The Facebook Files by Jeff Horowitz, an explosive series of articles published in October 2021 that exposed the inner workings of — and multiple harms caused by — the world’s largest social network.

Released in 2010 by Sony Pictures and based on the Ben Mezrich’s The Accidental Millionaires, The Social Network was a huge hit with audiences and critics and earned $226 million at the global box office. Nominated for eight Oscars including Best Picture, the film won three, including Sorkin for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Since its release, Sorkin has noted on several occasions his interest in doing a follow-up, but he couldn’t find the right angle. Following the events of January 6, 2020, when the U.S. Capitol was attacked, Sorkin found new inspiration saying in an interview last year that he believed Facebook played a part.

Sources stress that the new film isn’t a “January 6” movie and will focus not just on the 2020 election but also Facebook’s effect on teens, preteens, violence and countries outside the U.S.

Although the original was directed by David Fincher, Sorkin will take on directing duties for this pic having sharpened his skills since the original Social Network came out. His recent directing credits include Molly’s Game, The Trial of the Chicago 7 and Being the Ricardos.

No production date has been set, but sources say that with various deals closed, Sorkin will now focus on finding his ensemble. One can expect every agent in town moving fast to get their rising stars in front of Sorkin for the highly-coveted parts, given what the original did for actors including Jesse Eisenberg and Andrew Garfield.

Speaking of Eisenberg, who earned an Oscar nomination for playing Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, it is unknown how big a role he will have in this story and whether Sorkin has been in touch with him to reprise the part. That said, while it makes sense that most of the other characters would not return for this film, it’s hard to imagine another movie about Facebook not having Zuckerberg appear in some form.

Main Trailer for Joseph Kosinski's F1 Starring Brad Pitt

Just watched this because all the reviews say it's a must watch in theatres, IMAX if you can. I didn't watch in IMAX but the race scenes were still very riveting, and that's the only reason anyone should watch the movie. The plot is stooopid, and the dialogue was undeserving of the great talent that had to deliver those mediocre lines. They dumbed down the technical details for the non-F1 fans like myself.

7/10.

Gave F1 a rating 7 to 7.5 myself. It was entertaining. They should have chosen someone else other than Damson Idris as the secondary lead.
