Most Overrated "Great" Movies

How does my list suck? and than you follow up and say that there are some really good films on there. lol

I think you contradicted yourself.

Uhhh...you're supposed to be listing overrated films in this thread...so the fact that you are picking truly good films for that list would mean the fact that you chose them for your list sucks...

Self-explanatory. I just finished the (wildly disappointing) Godfather series, having not seen it in many years, and this topic came to mind.

1. The Departed
2. The Godfather: Part II
3. Fight Club

Frankly, the original Godfather may be slightly overrated on its own, but Godfather II is markedly less impressive because, whereas the original hung its hat on stellar performances by Brando, Pacino, and Duvall, in the sequel, Brando's character is dead, Pacino's portrayal becomes a caricature of itself, and Duvall gets fuck all for screen time.

The Departed is just all-around a shitty film with shitty performances. It's like if The Godfather were directed by a music video director. DiCaprio and Wahlberg always blow because they're not dynamic talents, but Damon and Nicholson are genuinely talented actors. Yet Damon's performance is as boring and cookie cutter as the film itself and Nicholson's is cartoonish, perhaps to make up for everyone else.

For Scorsese, Taxi Driver, Mean Streets, Cape Fear, Raging Bull, and The Last Temptation of Christ are all markedly better than The Departed, and probably all are better than Goodfellas.

For Fincher, Se7en and Gone Girl are certainly better than Fight Club.

Go.
Agree on 2 and 3; haven't seen 1. I know its cliche, but I read the Godfather first, knowing that the movie was a classic, and then watched it after the book. Major disappointment.
Did not read the Fight Club, but I was not impressed with the movie.
Those two probably are on top of my list, along with Requiem For A Dream. Just painful to watch.

You missed the post of the guy asking me what movies I'd rate 8 or higher. So I gave that list. In the first page post 15 is my Overrated list.

I feel like some people are listing movies here that no one really considers great. People have been listing the Hobbit as overrated, but I think a lot of people thought they were mediocre. I realize there are issues with Rotten Tomatoes scores, but the Hobbit movies got 64%, 75%, and 60% respectively.

Terminator 2 - 3
The Dark Knight Rises - 3
Fargo - 2

Why the hate for Terminator 2? Just curious.

Totally agree with you on Dark Knight Rises and Fargo, those movies get a ton of love and I will never understand it. I thought both were awful.

The problem with Django for me is really that it doesn't have much if any moral complexity to me, its basically Jamie Fox looking cool blasting a load of evil slaving racists. I mean not a bad film or anything but typically I would expect more from QT.

Inglourious Basterds on the other hand does obviously present more in the way of moral questions, the deal with Landa and the shear bloodthirsty brutality of a lot of the revenge sort on the Nazi's.

Go.

Dude you are 100% correct, glad I'm not the only one who sees this. Godfather trilogy may be the most overrated of any. Followed closely by the Departed. While on the subject, Mark Wahlberg and Matt Damon may just be the 2 shittiest "top tier" actors of the last 2 decades.

I'm not too sure why I hated it, I haven't seen it in awhile. So I probably have to watch it again. I think it's because I didn't like the special effects. Also Edward Furlong was annoying.

In recent memory?

12 Years a Slave. (This movie sucked ass, minus Brad Pitt giving a great cameo and Fassbender was good too)

The Revenant.
American Sniper
Wolf of Wall St.
Silver Linings Playbook
Schindler’s List.

Agreed about Wolf of Wall St and American sniper.

Schindlers list however was fucking amazing.

12 years a slave, while graphic and pulling no punches, was a solid movie with amazing performances. Funny that you mention fassbender , who did a great job, but you don't mention Lupita, who's role was by far the best in the entire movie.

I thought the Lord of the Rings movies were visually arresting but incredibly long and tedious.

That Polish director's series w Juliet Binoche (Blue, etc.) also bored me to tears.

Wim Wenders' movies have so much promise but then fall apart...

Fuck outta here son

I didn’t like Schindler’s List. The music, the entire story bored, especially the ending(where he was like he wish he could’ve done more), talk about hamming it up. It’s worth a watch but it’s overrated. Not saying it is a bad movie but I wasn’t blow away by it hence i see it as overrated.

I do wonder how the movie would’ve been done if the director was Scorsese, who originally had the movie but decided to switch it Spielberg who had Cape Fear.

Same. Scorcese is a phenomenal director, Gangs of New York was Imo one if the best movies ever made. Also love that as an Irish italian, he's not afraid of making fun of Irish/Italian stereotypes, which is why I don't buy the criticism that he has too much racism in his movies.

Both of Scorcese‘s parents are Italian. You’re probably confusing him with De Niro who is half Italian and half Irish.

I thought I read that he also had Irish in him?

At any rate, thank you for the correction.

You are maybe the first person i've seen bash the departed like that. And i couldn't agree more.

How does that movie get called a masterpiece. It should have been great, it has a great director and great actors, and also an interesting plot line. But the end product is not very good, a lot of the dialogue and acting left so much to be desired. Nicholson's character wasn't scary at all, came across kind of goofy like you said. Dicaprio was overacting like his life depended on it, and damon was completely bland. The only really good acting performance was from sheen.

Either of the Blade Runner movies, such a shit bomb of terrible overrated movies where literally nothing happens in either movie. Just movies for a bunch of hipsters to pretend they see a bunch of crap in a movie when in reality nothing happens.

Nah. Both movies are praised for their atmosphere, visual effects, world and questioning what is human.

Basically, movies the typical mouthbreather who gets excited for Star Wars or the next Marvel movie hates because they have the attention span of a child and don't understand words real good.

Not only that. It's a goddamn remake of an already fantastic movie. Hacks, everyone involved with that film.

Lol at Django being an SJW propaganda film. It must be exhausting constantly being offended by anything not white.
