Most Overrated "Great" Movies

Its probably been 20+ years since I saw the original US cut but I remember my feeling was that ironically that it felt more drawn out because it took out so many characterful moments. The directors preffered cut to me has a lot more to hold your interest along the way however long it is.

I actually like it (8/10) but for something that makes all time lists it has problems, it's a very cold film. It's been probably a decade since i've seen it so who knows how it will play out, the older I get the higher the score usually. The new cut is 4h 11mn

Honestly I tend to feel the opposite, Leone for me is naturally a much warmer more melodramatic film maker than say Coppola, I mean De Nero's character is obviously very withdrawn but the film as a whole plays on romance, nostalgia, loss, etc much more openly than the Godfathers.

I think it's missing the energy of his westerns, I know he changed with time, and also having said that I wasn't all that crazy over "Duck, You Sucker" (6/10)

The Man with no Name trilogy and Once Upon a Time in the West are all 10/10 for me.

Its definitely more relaxed than his westerns I'd agree but I wouldn't personally say its a cold film as gangster epics go.

Very solid picks.

300 is, breathtaking visuals aside, is so goddamn cheesy, stupid, and historically ludicrous. Having the Spartans be homoerotically dressed homophobes was hilarious, though.

I don't know if anyone claimed 300 was great. It is a very faithful adaption of the Frank Miller graphic novel. I think it is very good at what it is and it knows what it is. A bromantic fight movie.

This sort of gets back to what I thought about Spielberg. 300 is a better movie in a lot of ways , not because it has a better story, than many of Spielberg's recent movies just because it can elicit feelings in the audience. Most of what Spielberg puts out now is flat and without feeling. I don't care that 300 is stupid. It is, almost without question but it elicits the audience to feel.

Pépé le Moko 6/10
The Lady Eve 6/10
Anatomy of a Murder 6/10
The Leopard 6/10
The Man Who Fell to Earth 6/10
Ordinary People 6/10
The Towering Inferno 5/10
Iron Man 3 5/10
Force Awakens & Rogue One 5/10

(need to re-watch):

The African Queen 6/10
Dracula 6/10
Hiroshima Mon Amour 6/10
Reds 6/10

The Swedish film "The Square" is being touted as one of the years best and I kinda wanted to walk out (3/10). Nocturnal Animals/The Accountant/Bonehawk Tomahawk/Blue Ruin are recent ones I disliked

The Man Who Fell to Earth

I don't know who thought this was a great movie. It is a very unusual and very overlooked. I was surprised by it. If you are going to remake a movie, this would be a great one to remake. The original is a product of its times and young people won't watch it. It is interesting but in some ways flawed but I liked it for where it went.

Bizarre SJW fantasy. Couldn't get through it or Inglorious Bastards.

I seriously doubt SJW's like Django unchained. It makes light of slavery, reinforces racial stereotypes, and portrays Waltz as the white savior. I think Spike Lee even got his panties in a twist over the film.

I had no trouble getting through it, but the last third was silly trash. Would have been a damn good movie if it had ended at the 70% mark.

Inglourious Basterds is a significantly better film as a whole, but the whole fantasy world Jewish revenge thing was kind of weird.
The Jewish girl getting revenge was the driving force behind the plot. Without her, there's no reason for Waltz's character to even be in the film.

Lord of the rings. Especially the first one which consisted of the hobbits staring into each others eyes as if they were in love. Fell asleep during that awfull movie.
LOTR is highly overrated.

You might be right. I didn't even get through a half hour of it. But I thought it was soaked in white guilt.

It is a white guilt movie. But snowflake SJW types are so sensitive, that anything that contains racial stereotypes, or a white helping out a POC protagonist, is still considered racist, in spite of the guilt.

Alright I'm a fan then. Anything that results in more SJW self flagellation is OK by me.

I find it hard to remember what I didn't like that much for anything that is well regarded, 6/10 is only one point below good. I watch so much genre trash that I enjoy, that i've become much less critical.

Giving The Great Escape a 2/10 is beyond comprehension.

Is this some kinda thing where people act all snobby and as if they truly know what a good movie Is, not like all the other mindless fools who like crappy movies like Godfather 2 ?

Because it's pretty damn douchey.
Godfather 2 is one of the greatest movies ever made and it's not up for discussion.

And The Departed was friggin awesome too.

Damn cinema snobby nerd douchebags.

I wouldn't say i hate Nolan, I just feel his movies for a lack of a better word having an incredibly bland /sterile feel to them. They cant even evoke a strong emotion either way about them be it negative or positive.

His films strike me as the type that are enjoyed by faux intellectuals. I guess it makes them "think", and thus they feel smart.

For me, any movie with leonhard dicrappio as the lead. Dude can't act.

Self-explanatory. I just finished the (wildly disappointing) Godfather series, having not seen it in many years, and this topic came to mind.

1. The Departed
2. The Godfather: Part II
3. Fight Club

Frankly, the original Godfather may be slightly overrated on its own, but Godfather II is markedly less impressive because, whereas the original hung its hat on stellar performances by Brando, Pacino, and Duvall, in the sequel, Brando's character is dead, Pacino's portrayal becomes a caricature of itself, and Duvall gets fuck all for screen time.

The Departed is just all-around a shitty film with shitty performances. It's like if The Godfather were directed by a music video director. DiCaprio and Wahlberg always blow because they're not dynamic talents, but Damon and Nicholson are genuinely talented actors. Yet Damon's performance is as boring and cookie cutter as the film itself and Nicholson's is cartoonish, perhaps to make up for everyone else.

For Scorsese, Taxi Driver, Mean Streets, Cape Fear, Raging Bull, and The Last Temptation of Christ are all markedly better than The Departed, and probably all are better than Goodfellas.

For Fincher, Se7en and Gone Girl are certainly better than Fight Club.

How does my list suck? and than you follow up and say that there are some really good films on there. lol

I think you contradicted yourself.

Fuck outta here son

This has to be a joke. Ran gets a 1? The great Escape a 2? That's not even possible.

lol no joke anything is possible, but I might have to watch those movies again to reconfirm.

I've been watching all the awards movies lately and so far nothing has blown me away.

Lady Bird
3 Billboards
I, Tonya

All fine films and some great performances but as a whole they were not that great.
