Most overrated acting performance of all time

Scarface bombed in the 80s tho

Only became a cult classic and successful later on

It did pretty well at the box office with $65 million though even if critical acclaim and cult status took a bit longer. Plus Pacino wasn't very active on screen in that era, only appeared in a handful of films between that and Dick Tracy by which time Scarface had grown in the public consciousness.

You could maybe argue the big problem he had from the late 70's onwards was that De Niro filled the position for the #1 serious method actor in hollywood, maybe to a lesser degree Mickey Rouke and James Woods in the 80's. So Pacino kind of got forced into the more over the top roles and the "elder statesman" position rather earlier.

Plays a version of himself in every movie he's ever done. @HI SCOTT NEWMAN

Id say one of the most overrated performance is Samuel L. Jackson in Pulp Fiction and probably any movie he's in. I just don't consider his acting anything special, it's more annoying than anything.
I dunno, I thought his performance as the house negro in Django was pretty noteworthy, especially as against typecasting as it was (particular in Tarantino's shit)

Jackson is just in too much shit. Most of his interesting roles fly under the radar and get buried. I mean, has anyone seen the Caveman's Valentine?

What the fuck is that?

Who you got and why?

I got Heath Ledgers joker due to him kicking the bucket

Denzel Training Day.

Wait!!! Lemme land.

Not saying he wasn't good, Denzel is the man. But folks acted like that was his best performance ever (probably because he got the Oscar) I think Malcolm X was his better performance he was performing like he channeled Malcolm or something (some say he did).

A lot of his acting afterwards was a caricature of Alonzo.

<{monica}>

I feel you dog. It seemed like that Oscar was for all the other times he didn’t get it.

Overrated does not mean bad.

Ledger as the Joker was very good, but those who claim it as one of the all time great performances in cinema.........Jack Nicholson's joker, whilst a completely different take on the character, was just as good, imo.

Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lecter is another one. Love SOTL. Love Hopkins. Love the character. But he played it like he was a Bond villain or a Spiderman antagonist. Thought Brian Cox and Mads Mikkelsen did a better job, truth be told.

J.K. Simmons as Fletcher in Whiplash
maybe the director is to blame, but all that yelling didnt sound like legit anger to me. it sounded like over-acting.

Poor, simple lad you.

Youve completely misread/misinterpreted the character/performance.

Simmons character was trolling Tellers, being antagonistic and provocative in order to challenge Tellers character to be geat.

It was never genuine anger.

Their first real conversation he even telegraphs it when he talks about how that old jazz legends mentor purposefully tormented him to bring out his greatness.

Simmons was amazing.

Watch it again.

Good thread, poor execution thus far.

Glad you posted this. Pretty much my thoughts but I wouldn't have been able to express it.

Pretty much every comedian/comedic actor who tried to do a serious role.

Steve Carell was great in Foxcatcher.

Robin Williams had great performances in comedies and dramas.

I think Joe Pesci started out as a comedian.

There are quite a few comedians who've had success in dramatic roles, and a few otherwise straight actors who've been susprisingly good in comedic roles.

What? Darth Vader was better acting performance? They didn't even use his real voice, he was dubbed. And Heath Ledger was fantastic as the Joker. Who played the Joker the best in your opinion?
I said that wrong, I meant as an atg portrayal of a villain, not the acting itself.
Heath still played joker the best imo, at least until the Pheonix joker comes out soon. I thought he did a decent job but nothing too special

What's atg?

All time great

I didn't think it sucked, it just wasn't anything special. Slightly contrived and massively overhyped.
What do you think was amazing about it? Why is it so much better than say, Hans Landa, Alonzo, or most of the acting in game of thrones?
I don't understand why you're assuming I do think it's amazing. I never said anything about Ledger's performance. I simply asked what atg means.
