Scarface bombed in the 80s tho
Only became a cult classic and successful later on
It did pretty well at the box office with $65 million though even if critical acclaim and cult status took a bit longer. Plus Pacino wasn't very active on screen in that era, only appeared in a handful of films between that and Dick Tracy by which time Scarface had grown in the public consciousness.
You could maybe argue the big problem he had from the late 70's onwards was that De Niro filled the position for the #1 serious method actor in hollywood, maybe to a lesser degree Mickey Rouke and James Woods in the 80's. So Pacino kind of got forced into the more over the top roles and the "elder statesman" position rather earlier.
