They are REALLY milking the insinuations that its the 'final' film.
Its becoming quite condescending to the audience.
A few *winks* to it would be cute, because we know after the last one underperformed they really need this one to be a hit... or who knows... it may actually be the last one.
(Not believing that, but I bet it will be a talking point if the boxoffice numbers are underperforming).
With the exception of MI:III, I don't don't think any of the other films was ever hyped as "the last one". That's what they're strongly hinting at here. But it's just marketing hype. Remember how overbudget the movie is (over $400 million)? That's why they are hyping it the way they are. To generate the maximum amount of buzz possible to get the most amount of people to see it. They need this movie to be a huge success and make A LOT of money in order for it to make a profit. After the relative box office disappointment of Dead Reckoning they are going
all out to ensure this one succeeds. Pushing it as "the last one" adds an extra layer of interest it otherwise wouldn't have.
But don't believe for a second it'll be the actual last one. Tom Cruise has said he wants to keep making M:I movies for as long as he is capable, and even used Harrison Ford as an example of doing action movies into his 80s. Something he hopes to be able to do as well.
When asked about the future (of M:I) in a recent interview, Tom just kind of smiled and said "TFR is a culmination of the last 30 years." (wink wink). He also admitted in another interview that when he watched the movie at the premier, when it was over he leaned over to McQ and said
"We can do better."
I have no doubt we'll get more movies down the line. It's just a matter of
when. After TFR I think Tom is going to focus on a handful of other projects and then return to this after all that's done. His WWII movie. His space movie. Top Gun 3. And a couple others. It will give the M:I brand time to rest and garner new interest and excitement when it finally returns sometime around 2030. And we may finally get an all new director (though McQ will still be heavily involved).
On top of all that, the Oscars are finally going to recognize stuntmen. It's likely that Tom will use M:I to try and win an Oscar for his stuntwork.
The only way this is actual the last one is if Paramount says no more, which would only happen if TFR is a box office failure.
