So recently I read a few articles dealing with how extremely high doses of Vitamin C can lead to seriously positive health benefits-

The Mechanics of Liposomal Encapsulated Vitamin C

Cardiologist and orthomolecular specialist Dr. Thomas Levy discovered exactly why the clinical results of this type of oral C could match the efficacy of many times as much vitamin C by IV.

Dr. Levy was skeptical at first. He has treated thousands of patients with IV C and is seriously involved with orthomolecular (high dose vitamin treatment) medicine. He couldn't believe what was happening with this oral C compound's ability to match or surpass clinical results with much higher doses of IV C.

He came to realize that the combination of vitamin C and essential phospholipids radcially improved cellular bioavailability. Less than 20 percent of IV C gets into cells. But the Lypo-Spheric compound permits 90 percent of the C to get into cells. That's because cell walls are made of fats. Vitamin C is water soluble.

Tiny particles of vitamin C coated with phospholipids create molecules of vitamin C coated with a substance similar to the cell walls. Thus those coated vitamin C molecules can slip into the cells easily. The encapsulation also avoids diarrhea thresholds of normal oral C.

Though not nearly as expensive and much more accessible than IV C treatments, the product might not fit long term use on a low budget. So make your own! The homemade version might be slightly less than 90 percent bio-available to your cells.

Basically, Vitamin C is very good for you in large doses, the problem with most types of Vitamin C pills and powders is that they have a very low bio-absorption rate, somewhere around 20%, which means that if you take a 1000 mg Vit C pill, your body is only going to synthesize about 200 mg of it. Another problem is that common Vit C pills and powders will cause major diarrhea if you take too much of them.

That's where Liposomal Vitamin C comes in, it has a much higher rate of bioabsorbtion, somewhere around 90% if made correctly, doesn't cause diarrhea, and can be made at home relatively inexpensively, here's what you'll need-

RECIPE

Stainless Steel Ultrasonic Jewelry Cleaner
Soy or Sunflower Lecithin
100% Pure Ascorbic Acid = Vitamin C
Distilled Water (No tap water because of contaminations)
Blender or better a Braun Hand Held Mixer because it blends better

First of all, at least 30 minutes before you start blending anything, you should:

1.) Pour 3 TBsp Lecithin into 1 cup distilled water and soak at room temperature. Within 25 minutes all the granules should be soft. This is important, do not skip.

2.) In a blender or a narrow, tall (over 7 inch tall) container for a stick or immersion blender, blend the soaked Lecithin for a few minutes. This will blend quickly.

3.) Dissolve the 1 TBsp of Vitamin C crystals in

I just had the ass piss about twenty mintues ago, and I haven't taken any vitamin C.

I'm skeptical of the efficacy of taking high doses of anything. Just about every vitamin or mineral has someone advocating that high doses of it has amazing health benefits. What would happen to a person who took the recommended high dose of all of them?

Yeah, usually large doses of anything is a bad idea. Moderation is probably the wisest thing when it comes to ingesting vitamins and minerals. 20 years from now a study will come out that high doses of vitamin C causes cancer.

There are actually already studies done with cells in culture that suggest large doses of C and E can cause cancer.

Yeah but in vitro experiments on potential carcinogens turn up like a million things that increase the risk of cancer.

i've never heard of high dose vitC being good or bad till now though.

Um... what? Are we talking theoretical physics here? I'm uncertain...

He was making a Breaking Bad reference implying that you were tricking us in to making Meth. But the show used it in a direct reference to the physicist so you weren't too far off.

My Grandpa has been going on about high doses of vitamin C for the last 15 years. He routinely takes 3-5 grams a day, but will bump that up to 10-12 grams to deal with any sort of ailment. He hasn't been to a doctor in 30+ years, is 92, and he and my grandmother still live independently. He doesn't take any prescription drugs and has no issues with hearing, vision, or mobility. He's also really into vitamin E and B complex.

Note that I said suggest. I would use caution regarding taking any supplement in doses much larger than would be found in a normal diet.

What this paper is saying is that Hexavalent Chromium (Chrom6), which is a chemical compound used in making steel, leather, and various other industrial products, can be activated by Vitamin C, causing mutations and cell breaks, but, this only occurs when Vitamin C and Chrom6 become mixed inside the cell wall, an interaction that is not naturally occurring and had to be induced in a lab setting.

From the linked paper-

Outside cells, Zhitkovich said, vitamin C actually protects against the cellular damage caused by hexavalent chromium, the toxic chemical that starred as the villain in the true-to-life Hollywood drama, Erin Brockovich. In fact, vitamin C has been used as an antidote in industrial accidents and other instances when large amounts of chromium are ingested.

Vitamin C works protective wonders because it is a powerful antioxidant, blocking cellular damage from free radicals. Specifically, the vitamin rapidly

The vitamin C idea is very old but the science still doesn't back it up.

'Science' doesn't back up a lot of health-related ideas that they aren't able to patent.

Come on man. Look at the average supermarket. The supplement/herb aisle is huge. It's a huge industry. My dad buys a lot of this shit. Probably takes like 5 different things a day. It may help, but the science just isn't there. Also, I think a lot of these supplements are sold by big pharma too. Though I agree that some of these supplements, like zinc for example, can help with colds. And are better than mainstrean stuff like sudafed.
