Opinion Mike Rowe - 4 Year College Degrees Are Now Shameful

Yes, and? That doesn’t make Mike Rowe any less of a wolf in sheep’s clothing. That “extremely good” pay comes from union organizing in those trades, something Mike Rowe is against.

No it doesn't.... lol

It comes from making yourself irreplaceable to your employer and working your way up. If you're happy with only doing just enough to get by, then don't be angry when you get passed by someone with a superior work ethic.

And if you're talking construction unions, some the worst fucking workers I've come across were union clowns. And they're unfireable.

Of course there's excellent Union workers too. They take up the slack for the shitheads.

And in todays market, Union or non-union, you better pay your workers well, because they're so in demand, another company will poach them in a heartbeat.

And don't get me started on the City Worker's Unions. The biggest fucking joke of morons I've ever seen. The City of Houston being at the top of that list of places I've worked around the country. Water Plant operator got caught sleeping in an storage closet with a stack of porn magazines.... and still didn't get didn't fire d(2011). Don't worry.. .it's ok. Just drinking water for one of the biggest cities in the US.

I build water treatment projects around the country. I have had operators ask for help troubleshooting issues they created. They didn't want to escalate up their bosses and expose how fucking incompetent they are.

I've got a hard drive of pics that I may someday release to the public. It's fucking shocking how incompetent Union City Workers are.

Anyone with a ounce of ambition gets squashed by the surrounding lazy fucks, not wanting to made to look bad. Until anyone with an ounce of talent leaves those toxic shitholes. Its a fucking joke. And you wonder why big cities are perpetually broke, overpaying for fucking dipshits.

It's ok... I understand that a solid work ethic and hard work is a dirty word these days. Those evil companies... lol.

What other generation could have come up with the idea of "Quiet Quitting"... It fits so well with young adults now

Yep 100% - as with most entertainers, they feel superior to people with real jobs, so they talk down to us and try to tell us how to think.

The guy was a fucking TV show host.

- That's the biggest true ever. I see that here all the time. But they're cant even have a show, without a eletrician seting up the stage lighting, or a EMT/firefighter close, to save someone for choking out in drugs, they took to withstand horrible music!

And what's the problme to paygin for a degree? Were the hell would this S.O.B, learn the skills to be a veterinarian for example?

There's good money for Trade Skills... extremely good. And you don't have to go hundreds of thousands in debt for a useless degree.

Yeah, I know the idea of putting in a honest day's work is terrifying for some

Its simple supply and demand. There's a dearth of qualified blue collar workers....

- Here were i live very feel young people want to do heavy-jobs.

I've noted thats is a trending today. My teacher said it's pretty rare, that he gets students under 30's years old, to became electricians. The same with brick layers etc. I can say, that vast marjority of today young people cant do a rolimã:

Ha!!! I made one of those with 2x4's and lawnmower tires!!! My grandpa helped me acquire that parts and put it together.

BTW IMHO most important thing is this: is this position regulated by government ( then certain papers are mandatory to have and without them this job isn't possible to get ) or NO.
__
For example when we had inspection done by labour inspectorate, they didn't had asked about my education and had asked forklift operators to show their papers and had asked to show instructions journal.
In other case demanded electrician to show papers and checked in database does drivers have active lic....EU...

- Same. You can hire a security guard without training course here? Yes. But the business doing that, will get thrown under the buss, if the guys does something wrong, what he has a bigger chance to do, since he doesnt fears losing his license!

The same with a fire brigadist or civil fire-fighter here.

A degree is a chence to make sure you get the skills to do the job, being a badass kick-boxer, didn't make Alistair Titan-O-Reem think he was to good, to put a white-belt and go to a karate class. That's a thing i learned on martial arts. I will never be good enough and know all, even in my own field.

In a seminar years ago, a teacher told us. That studing(training) is how we show respect to our profession. Because thats elevate the field!

- How you guys call those in USA?

I had a couple ones more elaborated, a batmobille and a Formula One car. I always say i regret dont investing in becoming a carpenter!

I think we used a bike seat to sit on.

- We called them rolimãs here. I think it's was because people here thought they're called rolling-mans?

It's was a kind of a badge of honor, doing your own car!
Even the rich kids did them!

NO.
Trades does have different levels and for example in europe degree doesn't determine are you goldsmith, silversmith or gemstones grinding specialists.
Clients determine who you are. In old style stuff also concurrents in chamber of craft voting about you.
My area during last maybe 6 years had 1...new goldsmith... and xxxxx guys with different master's degrees ...

Most expensive gemstones are grinded in europe and this is done by Master of Craft. I don't mean here mainstream gemstones grinding business....

Ofc I agree that to have degree is good stuff....while in some cases with this isn't enough or ....it isn't necessity.

In some EU countries you can't hire security guard as security guard in contract without cert etc papers.
Therefore companies are hiring them as attendants etc and are demanding to get these papers in order to keep job and get pay increased.

Rich kid who went to drama school and has never had a blue-collar job in his life is now somehow the spokesperson for blue-collar workers?

Seems like cultural appropriation.

You can do well going blue-collar or white-collar. If you don't want to bust your ass physically, though, the degree will open up doors that simply otherwise wouldn't.

College degrees aren't inherently good or inherently bad. And they are certainly not shameful. Degrees come in all kinds, and be used for a litany of purposes. And generally, in the broadest terms possible, you will get out what you put in. That is, using college to fuck around, and picking degrees that realistically have no ROI, is probably not the smartest to capitalize on what (for most) is a huge investment.

This is why I hate Mike Rowe. He has led a merciless campaign to tie education to capitalism. The point of education is to learn not to make money.

Any data to back up this opinion? I remember analysis from the UK referendum that showed a heavy skew towards older and less educated folks as sharing the most news articles that were outright false. Suspect you would see the same elsewhere.

A 2022 study found that roughly 74% of college students get their news from social media

The Results
Students struggled. They employed inefficient strategies that made them vulnerable to forces, whether satirical or malevolent, that threaten informed citizenship.
• Over two-thirds never identified the “news story” as satirical.
• Ninety-five percent never located the PR firm behind the supposedly “nonpartisan” website.
Often students:
• Focused exclusively on the website or prompt, rarely consulting the broader web
• Trusted how a site presented itself on its About page
• Applied out-of-date and in some cases incorrect strategies (such as accepting or rejecting a site because of its top-level domain)
• Attributed undue weight to easily manipulated signals of credibility—such as an organization’s non-profit status, its links to authoritative sources, or “look”

if he were a liberal you'd suck his balls

you folks are really special

You are the one who is special - assuming that I love liberals lol - keep repeating the same rhetoric.

Your mind is diseased. Wake up.

A four year degree is still valuable as long as it's not some liberal arts crap.

It depends on the degree. Many are shameful.

I got a BS in Electromechanical Engineering with minors in Physics and applied Mathematics. I found it quite challenging, and I am proud of my degree.

I have a degree in Political Science and I am a non functioning retard.

I wish I was joking.
