Metal Gear solid/ Hideo GOATjima appreciation thread

I had way more fun playing MGS2 than I did Snake Eater. I really think that game would be held in much higher regard if Raidan (sp?) didn't replace Snake for the majority of the game. MSG1 is still miles ahead of both in my opinion but you cannot compare late 90's games to mid-00 game to today's games in an objective fashion.
Raiden wasn't the only problem for me, the story just got downright stupid in the second half of the game. The silliness was kept to a minimum in 1.

Does the game ever get frustratingly difficult? The difficulty right now ranges from pretty easy to a bit challenging. The difficulties come from trying to be as sneaky as possible, I imagine if you just kill people it would be pretty easy though.

A couple of the missions I saw my friend playing looked like a pain in the ass. Basically anything with skulls does not look fun. I'm on main mission 15 now.

The more you play and further you get, guys adopt new equipment that can be annoying. If you're used to sniping tranq shots from far away, soon everyone will have a helmet. Shoot them in the face, and they get a visor. Later on most squads have one or two guys in riot gear as well on patrol, so you can't tranq them period. Makes you use your CQC and hold up, which I find a lot more rewarding anyway. Also, areas that were sparsely patrolled before might now have a gunship there or armored vehicle units.

So yes, it becomes more challenging, but never insurmountably so imo. You'll get mission variations later on, like a main mission you've already done but a new stipulation like: No reflex, no hats, OSP (onsite procurement) of weps only, and everything has better visibility (like a hard mode) - those are called Subsistence. Or extreme missions where everything does a lot more damage (those are usually skull missions). Finally, you have total stealth, and the name implies the parameters.

Early skulls are easy, just use a LMG and dive away from giant exploding pillars they make. Later on (way later on) when they're 'extreme', use a brennan sniper rifle because it has the most piercing.

There's 50 main and 150 side ops I believe, so you still have a lot to go and time for the difficulty to increase.

If you find the game too easy still, I'd suggest going non-lethal (which I would always suggest because it's more rewarding). If you're already doing that, trying turning off reflex mode in options, because it keeps you much more honest in your infiltration.

The few times I found something 'frustratingly' difficult was usually just because I was going about it the wrong way. When I see people say something insane like, "My finish time was 97 minutes", my eyes bulge and I wonder what the fuck you were doing the whole time. If something seems 'too hard', you're probably just not thinking outside the box and need to take a small step back to reevaluate.

Yeah, I remember the moment in MGS2 where I knew I was in for some crazyness. At the end of tanker mission, I'm watching the cutscene and thinking "So, Liquid Snake is in Revolver Ocelot's arm now? Okay....."

For the most part I go non-lethal. I've only had to kill people when I was destroying tanks (didn't have the upgraded fulton at that point) and at the end of the first Africa mission (destroy the oil pumps) at the very end I ended up blasting away 2 guys who were near my LZ. Aside from that I have not done any killing. I could have probably redone that oil pump ending to not blast the last two guys, but I was out of tranquilizers and that mission was starting to get on my nerves so I just said fuck it

I voted for 3 but the first three MGS games are all amazing in their own way.

I admit I didn't really 'get' 2 when I first played it but I've read and watched things since explaining it. Story is weird but awesome.

It's not a big deal. I've blown people up and lost them in sandstorms with a fulton early on. If you kill a whole bunch of people you grow a giant horn and leave blood stains where you crawl though.

Admit it though, you marked out when he said "SO, BROTHER..." in Liquid's voice.

Actually no. I was a little disappointed he was still around. Thought they were going to move on. In fact, the whole Liquid Ocelot thing is one of my biggest gripes with the series. It's just so fucking dumb. In a series where people complain about the fantastical characters, like a goddamn Vampire and whatnot, Liquid always gets a pass, and I don't know why. His character is the most ridiculous of all.

Ughhhhh another work week about to start. Can't wait until Thursday so I can put some more time into this game

3 > 2 > 1 = 4 > GZ > PW

Easy.
GZ would be higher if it was longer.

I perused the GameFaqs board and man.... some bitter MGS fans going hard about how much teh game isn't a real MGS game and shit like that. I can just sense the butthurt

So as I read and watch more reviews, I am a bit worried about the story, for me story is a big thing in MGS games and I've seen from a few places that the story is actually the weak point in this game, gameplay is the main focus, which is great because if GZ is any indication, MGS5 has the best gameplay yet and is a ton of fun to play. However, I always liked the story, the big moments in each game is what made me love the series. Moments such as the torture scene in MGS3, the ending with the Boss, the microwave scene in MGS4, the battle between the Metal Gears and the end of act 4 and 5.

From what I hear, I hope its not lacking in those pivotal amazing moments. Another concern I have is that it'll be too much like Peace Walker, the formula peace walker has is great for a portable experience, the mission system in that game I felt broke up the story, because I was so focused on upgrading mother base and my weapons, I sometimes forgot or didn't care as much about the story as I did in the past games.

I'm hoping I don't agree with some reviews and its a matter of opinion, but lacking a grabbing story will be a disappointment to me. The peace walker formula is worrying since PW was my least favorite. I liked the linearity and story focus of the past games.

We gotta keep in mind all of these people had a total of 40 hours to play the game, and they rushed through it. I believe it will be just like GZ in where we will get some cut scenes but a lot of the story we will have to to unlock ourselves through collecting tapes. The Intel you collect in GZ was intense and really made the game a lot darker

It's a MGS game. No question about that.

It's just that Konami fallen prey to the dirty business tactics of cutting content that's orginally intended to be in the original release. With the knowledge of the specific content cut, and never to be released as DLC, it gives the impression that we were sold an incomplete product.

Given the flaws of the storytelling of the game, I'm sympathetic to that point of view. But it is a MGS game.

But for me, MGS4 was the finale of the series. This is just a bonus.

Peace Walker, oddly enough, was a look into where the future of this franchise was headed. It was a "game", and not a cinematic experience. I can see why Kojima took inspiration from it, considering most critics will cite the ridiculously long cutscenes as a "flaw" in the MGS franchise.

I believe this game will be one of the most polarizing in the franchise. Some will cry foul at it not having the MGS trademark cutscenes, while others will rejoice that it finally did away with them in favour of pure gameplay.

Quiet on Extreme= inpossibru

Not really, I managed to beat her, the key is to move and not stay in one place, try to flank her and get to a position where she doesn't see you. Night time is better for this mission imo. I got wrecked the first few times because I tried to have a head to head battle with her, she's too fast for that. Moving around the map is the best course of action.

Yea that's how I pretty much see Ground Zeroes and Phantom Pain. They are pretty much improved versions of Peace Walker as far as Gameplay and the way the game is structured goes. I honestly don't mind it at all tho because you still end up getting a deep story.

Did you play it, or did you just watch someone play it? I ask, because I don't think just watching it on Twitch gives you a true feeling of the game.

I personally enjoy that they're no longer cramming cutscenes down my throat. I like playing the game to discover the story, and having to look to find answers to my questions. Listening to cassettes, wandering around mother base looking for an easter egg, and doing extra objectives to get 'the whole picture'.

I think calling the biggest installment of the series a bonus is just kind of silly. Both Witcher 3 and MGSV have managed to make massive open world games that are fantastic when most everyone said they'd be outside their realm. That seems pretty awesome to me.

It's too bad she dodges supply drops now. I was all super cocky going into it, then she dodges the box that used to do half her stun health and I knew I was in deep shit.

Yeah reviews say there is definitely a lot more of the story in the tapes that you find, but again like I said its following the same formula of PW, there was a ton of extra stuff in tapes in PW as well and I rarely bothered to listen to it. I haven't bothered to listen to much of the tapes in GZ either. I'll probably give it a try, but hopefully its nothing major. I hope you're right about the reviewers rushing through it so they didn't get a chance to take it in properly. I actually really liked the little bit of story in GZ, the final scene where MB is destroyed was awesome. If there's more moments like that, I'll be happy.

I honestly thought PW was the perfect formula for a portable experience and didn't think they would go that route on consoles. And yeah I feel MGS5 was molded by "fixing" the complaints about the cutscenes. But I haven't played it yet, so I can't judge something that I haven't played. I have no doubt that I will love it, but I am just worried about the story taking a backseat when it was always hand in hand with gameplay. I was hoping for the best MGS ever, in all areas, not just gameplay. Guess I'm just gonna have to wait and see.

I played Ground Zeroes, and have watched several hours of a playthrough of Phantom Pain on a Youtube channel.

I wasn't referring to the lack of long cutscenes. I am sympathetic toward the view that they were getting too damn long, and way too much of the overall percentage of the game experience. I meant that so much of the story felt unfinished. We never see Eli after he excapes with the Metal Gear, and the final mission of the game mysteriously appears after doing a certain number of side missions, with no explaination as to why.
And as to why a young Psycho Mantis and flaming ghost Volgin make appearances have no explanation ever.
Or why Revolver Ocelot and Big Boss are currently friendly when they've been enemies in the past, or as to why Ocelot is the most level-headed character in the game, when he's a complete loose-cannon before and after the events of this game in the storyline.

I mean, to me, a die hard MGS series fan that was 100% fine with the series ending on a high note with MGS4, MGS5 is a bonus. A mere side-story.

Trying to play through 4 before I get 5. Only my second time playing it and I remember why. This game kind of blows.

Mission 30. Done. Fuck it. Always moving around when I call in my air strike.

Onto chapter 2.

Started playing through the Legacy collection, began with MGS 3. Got through Ocelot, Pain, Fear, and the End today. First MGS game that I'm giving a solid try aside from 4 a couple years ago, and I'm enjoying it.

You can always "find" (if you know what I'm saying) the PC versions of the first two MGS games.

Actually found both of them, but the controls of both of them are both archaic and poorly implemented for PC so i'm having an asspained of time playing it. I'm just cruising through Peace Walker on emulator instead. Slightly less archaic design and the addition of CQC is making life must easier. But some of the game's quirks are still very grating though.

You're not kidding, it was pretty chilling. The encounter afterwards was just icing on the cake. Its easily my favorite mission so far.

I really tried to Fulton the Man On Fire. No luck.

You can actually do it, either via Wormhole Fulton (which is like a very advanced upgrade down the line) or.......use a cargo drop and aim it so that it hit the Psycho Mantis kid on the head....then you can get a clear shot to Fulton the Man on Fire. Although all it gets you is an extra or two lines, an additional objective done and that's about it

You said before you wouldn't play Peace Walker, but have you played Ground Zeroes?

I did play Ground Zeroes, but only once and then got rid of it. I sort of regret it because it would be the best way of brushing up on my skills. I enjoyed it for what it was but I thought it would be part of Phantom Pain.

lol I loved mgs4, but I know a few people who weren't big fans

Count me as a big MGS4 fan, but I have the most criticisms of it than any other game.

For one, the gameplay is fucking awesome - best in the entire series. BUT the problem I have with it is that the first two areas, Afghanistan and Brazil, are the only ones worth playing in playing through again and again. The other three areas, Paris, Shadow Moses, and Arsenal, aren't fun to play through.

I was really wanting an expansion of the gameplay in a 'MGS3 - Substidence' type of release. But that never happened, for some reason.

Btw you guys think they'll re-release MGS1-4 wiht updated graphics and shiz?

I just found out there are HD collections for 360 and PS3. Wish it was on PC doe.

I have a 360 but from what I read, the 360 collection only has MGS2, MGS3 and Peacewalker. I really want to play MGS4 as I never had the opportunity to since it was on PS3. Maybe my roommate will split the cost of a PS3 with me lol

This. The gameplay is way better than the previous games but the pacing is a bit off. But still I'm a big fan and have played it through more than 20 times.

That's because it would've taken 5-6 dvds for MGS4.

The original will always be my favorite.

Four was just the perfect ending with nostalgia bombs all over. But I still prefer 3 over 4.

Fuck that mission with the convoy with skulls jumping out of it (mission 15 or 16?)!!!!!

Shit was so annoying. Tried to extract and run. Died like 5 times. Tried to fight the Skulls, got my ass kicked like 5 times. Shotgun didn't do shit and once I saw my rocket launcher doing shit damage to them I figured my only hope was to get lucky. Finally I got really lucky right when they jumped out during the Reflex mode I went to the convoy and fulton'd it, got lucky because they didn't bring it down then ran to D-Horse and sprinted away. Still almost died, my screen was all red and shit and 1 or 2 more hits I would have died.

So basically I only beat it by dumb luck.

Still got an A on the mission somehow lol

1 > 3 > 4 > 2
I've never played the MSX games or Peace Walker.

That mission is a shit show. I ran to the airport with d horse, fultoned the truck, they shot it down, had to run back and do it again. Shit was stressful lol.
