Metal Gear solid/ Hideo GOATjima appreciation thread

Will I enjoy this if I have never played a metal gear game and know nothing about it or would I be better off with mad max???

I'm gonna say you will enjoy it even without having played the others. I jumped into the series with MGS4 and that game is known to not be the best game to jump into for a newbie to the series since you won't get most of the story. I still ended up loving it due to the characters and the crazy shit that went down.

Plus from what I hear this game is heavily gameplay oriented more than the past games, so I think you'll be fine.

It took me a bit to get it, and afterwards, I went on Youtube and watched some reactions to it (in particular, Jeremy Jahns video on the ending.)

I think it was good, and I didn't see it coming! But then again, I've only recently begun playing the Metal Gear games.

I think you'll be fine. The story in the series can be overwhelming at times, but according to many reviews The Phantom Pain is heavily focused on gameplay

The narrative to this game is just mind boggling to me. The way they chose to craft and present the story is just god awful, IMO. Really terrible.

I think this is the best stealth game of all time but they completely dropped the ball with the story. It would have been one thing to reduce cut scenes, etc..., but they chopped this story up to hell and back, made nearly every character mute, and slapped on some incredibly boring plot reasoning for it.

No cohesion at all. Such a damn shame, too, because the potential is there in spades. This could have been the best MG for virtually any fan, but they really neglected the story and presented it in a terrible way.

I know everyone loves the game, but as a long-time MG fan I can't help but be disappointed in it and think about what could have been.

I played Ground Zeroes earlier. It was the first time I've ever played a MGS game, and holy shit have i been missing out. That was a blast. I'm gonna go back and try to get a higher grade soon. I can't believe that I've never tried one of these, i wish i was caught up in the story so i could play 5 but I'm gonna wait and buy the HD collection and watch the others on YouTube. Then I'll get 5, can't wait.

I envy you. If I was introducing a friend into the MGS series, I'd suggest he do this -

1. Watch this. All the cutscenes of MGS1, converted into a movie.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=MeYbHWQrM9A

2. Pick up the HD collection and play MGS 2 & 3.

3. Then pick up MGS4.

4. Go back to the HD collection and play Peace Walker.

5. Then MGS5 Ground Zeroes.

And finally, MGSt Phantom Pain.

You're going to have the gaming experience of your freaking life, my friend.

I love story in games, especially when they are told well. Some of my favorite games of all time are there because of the amazing story portrayal.
But I have never been a fan of MG's story, over use of cutscenes, convoluted plot, or messy dialogue style.
Yahtzee on zero punctuation summed up the writing style best for me "bla bla bla, or in other words; bla bla bla"

The series always felt like they had awesome ideas for characters and the writers enjoyed developing those characters. And that is something I can get behind, but the overall plotting seemed silly to me.

Do what I posted above, you'll thank me later.

I suggest to skip MGS1 (and NOT play the GameCube remake) and just watch the youtube movie because it looks very dated now. It's a 1998 release, and modern TVs make it look like shit. The gameplay was good, but pale in comparison to later releases.

It does have the best damn boss battles in the entire series. That's undeniable.

Oh shot, totally forgot MGSO drops tomorrow, you guys going to check it out?

I don't think he should skip it, if he has a ps3 and gets the legacy collection, mgs1 comes included. It still holds up and is fun to play. And yes the boss battles alone are worth it.

He said he's going to get the HD Collection. He can get the Legacy Collection, but it's very pricey.

It'd be cheaper to get the HD collection, and buy MGS1 over PSN.

The MGS3 Subsidence version in the HD collection, having the original MG games, practically make the HD Collection include the majority of what's in Legacy, minus MGS1.

Buy this and you're absolutely set.

Just read that it drops in January on PC, man that sucks! I'm sure it will be worth the wait though, PC gamers are spoiled in that regard.

I played the other two mgos and loved them so I can wait

I'm tempted to buy a ps4 copy to play the multiplayer right now lol. But I'm still not done the single player. I'm hoping the PC multiplayer will be popular since myself and a couple buddies will be playing it.

Yeah, I paid $50 and got more than my money's worth.

So is the game's story effectively over after I blowed up Sagittarius? Other missions popped up after but I'm not sure if they'll just be never ending "go do this" type of things with no actual story advancement and don't want to waste time playing them if that's all it is.

There's a few other missions but if you don't want to see misfortune befall a certain buddy, I'd stop after Snuffaluffogus.

As Dizzy already linked, legacy collection is the way to go. Comes with everything.

MGS 1-4 + PW
VR missions ps1
And the visual graphic novel versions of MGS 1 and 2.

Not sure if it still comes with the little art book too though, when I bought it it did, but that was at launch.

And like RJ said, the gameplay is very good and it's very fun to play but the silliness of the story and acting really takes away from it.

Melodramatic Miller. Annoying ass-hat mute 12 year old, who happens to be an elite hand 2 hand combat expert, who I'm apparently cool with despite him trying to murder me and my troops from time to time. Being forced to listen to Ocelot drone on for like 10 minutes after some missions and he does that annoying pause after each sentence so just when I think he's finished and I can get back to playing he starts into the next sentence.

I did get a chuckle while Skullface stared at my crotch for 5 minutes while we have our awkwardly long face to face drive to see Dilophosauras.

Yes there is still story development after Sahelanthropus and Skullface. Heads up though they will make you do previously done missions on harder difficulties in order to keep advancing in the story.

You can just watch the movie version of 4 on Youtube.

I don't mind if I lose a buddy or something like that, I just wanted to know if it's actual story progression or like some open world games where the story is basically over but you can run around doing unrelated side-quests etc to the end of time.

I wish i could but i have a 360 and a One. I'll have to do what you said earlier and pickup 4 separately.

Wait, 4 isn't on the 360?

They would have had to have put it on an absurd amount of discs to port it to the 360.

PS3 had Blu Ray so it wasn't an issue.

Is it actually story progression, like main plot, or more of an unrelated thing that gives little snippets of main plot info? If the main story keeps moving forward I want to keep playing but if it's the latter I'll probably move on to something else.

They could've put it on the XBL store.

Did you get the chapter 2 scene? There is still quite a bit of story left after mission 31, so keep going, there are still big moments.

That's what I'll do if need be. I'll see if i can borrow one of my buddies ps3's, I'd like to actually play it.

Ah, that's a bummer for us 360 users.

Yeah, I saw the chapter 2 scene after the credits but it wasn't clear if chapter 2 started after the game ended (or not) or was going to be an expansion sold 12 months from now.

Never had a game roll full credits before the game was actually over before.

You don't have to do any of them. Just side missions and important cassette tapes to advance.

I'm only seeing pics of the PAL version on there so far.

The most important story moments happen after Sahalanthropus. Just do side ops, listen to cassette tapes, and the yellow main missions, not the harder replays.

The Timline goes like this..

Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater

Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker

Metal Gear Solid 5 Ground Zeroes

Metal Gear Solid 5 The Phantom Pain

Metal Gear

Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake

Metal Gear Solid

Metal Gear Solid 2 Sons of liberty

Metal Gear Solid 4 Guns of The Patriots

So While I recommend eventually playing all of the game because they're great and it adds more depth to the story for you. You would be fine with getting the HD collection on the 360 and beating Snake Eater and Peace walker before you jump into the phantom pain

So just defeated the game. Have a lot to say.

Regarding mission 45:
Dick fucking move with that entire mission! My jimmies are maximum rustled! Fuck everything!

Gods, making you fight all those tanks that can kill you in one hit. With their cheap ass sniper missiles that apparently can go through walls. Then you have to sneak pass even more guards.

But the cherry on the top, ohhhh the big slap to the face. You go through all that only for Quiet to die! It makes me wanna punch a wall.

And I wanna cry. Quiet's final scenes and her final tape were just incredibly directed, written, and beautiful.

Ok I'll gather my thoughts about the final mission soon.

I wouldn't recommend playing them in order.

It'd be really hard to go from playing MGS5 to the original MG 1&2, made over 25 years ago.

Stick with my list. Trust me.

Ok, now onto the ending:

So it was obvious in the beginning you weren't Big Boss. But I didn't think you were the medic from Ground Zeroes. I figured you were either a 4th clone, or Solidus, or Decoy Octopus.

I know a lot of fans are outraged with the ending, but I like it. I really do. I think it fits in with everything Kojima has been writing about. I watched the ending to MGS4 for the 1st time in years last night. Big Boss says, "Under the right circumstances, anyone can take the identity of another."

Was this early foreshadowing? Also, the fake Big Boss is a precursor to what Ocelot would become. It's proof that subconsciously becoming another can work and it shows how he was able to trick himself into Liquid. It brings that plot point and the theme of identity full circle.

Everyone complains that this wasn't' the story of Big Boss breaking bad. But it was. We saw it. The entire point of his crusade was to create a military organization powerful enough for no country to ever defeat them. A safe haven for soldiers to always have a home. To never feel useless because of their government.

Why? Because Big Boss and the Boss were pawns for the U.S. government. This ideal was based on that fact. He promised himself he would never do that to any of his soldiers. And you know what? He did that to Venom.

Big Boss betrayed all his friends, all his soldiers, all his ideals for that last chance to create Outer Heaven. He used his own man as a pawn to carry out his goals just like what happened to him. He became a demon the second he decided on this.

This also explains how Big Boss survived Metal Gear 1. Because it was Venom in place of him. This makes Venom a tragic figure. He pledged his full loyalty to Big Boss's plan. He gave up his face and his identity for his dream to come alive. He even gets to live out his own dream of being Big Boss. That's why he smirks.

And what happened? Big Boss gets rid of him just like the gov got rid of the Boss. No one will ever know who Venom was. He'll go down as a nobody while Big Boss takes all the glory. That's why he smashes the mirror in the final seconds.

All his loyalty was nothing in the end as he realized he was the pawn the entire time. Everything he did was for Big Boss to steal. And he's the man who's meant to die by Solid Snake's hand. It's depressing.

Obviously, the twist was breaking the 4th wall. Kojima was telling us we were Big Boss all along. I wonder if this was his plan from the beginning. Even before the Konami debacle. It does feel like Kojima trying to tell the fans thank you for everything. It's his last message to all of us. And I'm happy with it.
