Mental health days

I love my job. It’s very stressful at times but I do love it. Ironically work is one of the things I find a lot of comfort in. I actually find it’s good for my mental health.

I don't even think I missed a day of work in the last 5yrs
( that wasn't called for month in advance )

But, I'm that type of guy.
Will show up, even when it's counter productive.
Always remember, work won't love you back.

I got you all beat; my last employeer put me on admin leave and made me go see a psychiatrist to be cleared to return to work. I would up with about a 2 month paid vacation; it was pretty sweet.

I do occasionally when I really need it and when I can balance it with my work requirements. I feel like I'm a better employee because of it since I can avoid burn-out and depression/anxiety which effect performance. Not to mention I'm a better man, father, and husband as well.

Everyone does this once in a while or has done this at some point. Everyone has called in sick when they weren’t really sick. But “tough guys” just won’t call it a mental health day because they’re so tough that they’re afraid they’ll sound like pussies.

It'll be flooding next!

Thanks, yeah it's all about self acceptance and love really. Treat yourself like you would your loved ones.

Taking ecstasy helped a lot.
It helped me escape some dark times as well really. So long as it's done by Thursday I'll be a happy girl. My step-dad is driving me into an early grave.

Some jobs are mentally taxing. I'm a teacher and it can be unrelenting. Mental health days on occasion are a good thing. I use them.

I'd never just call in, but I would take a PTO day these days to just relax my mind. Before I could just do that on the weekends, but now with so many commitments I gotta take time to chill during the week when everyone is busy or out the house.

I've pulled a sickie, but it's nothing to do with mental health it's because I'm being lazy.

Although I suppose you could argue being lazy every now and then could help your mental health...

I advocate for taking them when necessary. The internet, email, messaging, social media etc have created unfortunate personal and work environments for a lot of people mentally. It also becomes impossible to just unplug like you could many years ago. Some jobs are still a hard 9 to 5 but the majority now almost feel 24/7.

If you need them and they're available then take them, but don't abuse the system. Use the days to unplug from everything instead of sitting and reading twitter. Also, Sherdog isn't really the best place to discuss mental health issues.

Yes. Companies don’t own you.

It’s a joke that paper supercedes compassion.

What would the consequences be of going into work when you need a mental health day? Unless you’re going to go postal I don’t see why a guy can’t buck up and power through the day.

Not a big fan of it except it is for certain type of jobs (ironically, those in that you work with mentally ill people).

Or if you have some personal thing going on (a relative died, someone close is sick, etc).
