There should be a distinction made between what the church was early on and what it (and pretty much all of its' offshoots) have become. Corruption, bloat, straying from teachings, etc. will happen with pretty much every organization over enough time. Religions, governments, anything.

Heck, the whole premise of the Reformation was, "We think people should be following the Bible but the Church won't let us read it."
