As said a lot in here, it was a suspected suicide attempt because the UFC decided NOT to take care of him anymore**shrug**.

I used to live right near a track I had to cross every day. There were a few times I had to cross when the lights were stuck. It’s nerve racking unless you can see completely into the horizon and terrifying at night. Train noise and visual cues are irrelevant if it’s moving fast. By the time you discern it’s direction and sound, it’s right on you. It looks so small only for a brief moment. We had people that died trying to cross when the lights were stuck. Crossing at night was one of the stupidest things I’ve done. Even though there was no train there, I could literally see nothing until the last second.

can't really say suicide without evidence, regardless of what issues he may of been going through unless the son confirms saying "my dad was talking about suicide or didn't sound well and wasn't making any sense on the phone" then we have no evidence to believe it was suicide related.

also he could've just made a bone headed decision by parking on the railway then making a call....it doesn't matter whether it was a botched suicide attempt or not, what matters is who is at fault either hughes or the NS company....I really don't think hughes has a leg to stand on, because any judge would ask why on earth he'd park his vehicle on a railway and then proceed to make a phone call.....basically matt will look like a jackass.
 
Damn, I just remembered 2 summers ago I was walking downtown with my friend and I was really focused on smth mentally. I grew up in the city, but that day I was walking RIGHT in front of the Light Rail and when my Bro grabbed my arm like WTF it was only then that I heard the train honking. I was COMPLETELY oblivious and I'm anoit 80% sure I was about to get smashed. My only option would have been to try to go for it, but that thing was moving FAST.LOL. Coincidentally a drunk guy got run over and was cut in HALF by the LR going the opposite way, about 10 ft up from where that happened 6 mos prior.

I STILL think that Matt was trying to kill himself that day based on the circumstances, but tunnel vision is a real thing no pun intended and you can TRULY not notice a TRAIN if your mind is somewhere else**shrug**.

Matt was a horrible person.

If he got himself on a better path, then good for him. But if people choose to not feel positive about him, there is ample justification to feel that way.

The guy brags and laughs about animal abuse, statutory rape, regular good old fashion rape (of his own wife under anesthesia), his abusive relationship with his wife, beating his father, all while looking down on others, being a mean spirited bully and all around douchebag.


It is one thing to make mistakes, and entirely another level of human shitbag to proudly publish a book about them knowing full well that his wife and children will have to deal with the material in that book.

I agree. Matt was liable for the accident and very likely may have been attempting suicide. However, the evidence for the latter is purely circumstantial.

shit that’s when wme bought company right I remember they took Liddell off too can’t Dana throw them few stacks here n there shit he gambles all time and rich as fuck giving Matt 50 gs a month for helping company would be pennies to him this also y Liddell fought Tito 3rd time even tho he had bad CTE damn hate ufc more n more each day lol they don’t give a fuck about there legends after career

I dunno hard to prove that from suicide only he knows I mean he was still legend not like he ckuidnt make money and he was hardworking guy doubt he’d kill himself just cause ufc but if that’s true ufc should pay the price that’s fucked up also says he doesn’t wanna kill himself now cause be wrong so I doubt he’d wanna kill himself when he was healthy

Matt was also in a failing marriage and was suffering financially. He was fine running the farm with UFC money but without it, farming was much more difficult.
 
There is lots of railroads there , it's easy to forget how dangerous it is . Matt should have stopped .
I once drove in front of a train I never saw it until the dingy noise and bar came down then I looked over and it's like 70 feet away I nearly had a heart attack but it turned out he was barely moving
 
Unless anyone has some solid proof why dont you work on having a little bit of respect and stop the suicide talk. Just pilau to make comments like that about another person when you dont know. Matts a legend of the sport and I have had the privlidge to know him for over 20 years. Hes been out to the island alot and was always a class act. Never turned away a fan or a young fighter with questions. This place is becoming sad. The amount of unchecked crap posted on here is just out of control. Glad to see him recovering and i pray for him and his family

Nah Bro, I'm not even a Hughes fan but they did him and Chuck dirty. I completely agree with you on that. However I dunno, if ones marriage was in shambles as well as his family relationships and then he gets news that he is losing 300k a yr for LIFE, which was probably the ONLY 300 hunnid thousand reasons the wife was ignoring his infidelities and the family was putting up with his BS, then I can ABSOLUTELY see a proud, narcissistic, control freak trying to get the last F YOU and bit of sympathy by offing himself. Going BACK to work after thinking that you are set for the rest of your life is pretty DRAMATIC news and I seriously doubt that it was "no big deal" for him. No, we probably wont ever KNOW but I don't think it's a far fetched assertion that he tried to take his life that day.

Ive read his book, still have a copy of it, most of the stuff people say about it is taken out of context. It’s a good read. Matt is honest to a fault.

ya I dunno sucks either way but if that were true he tried killing himself wouldn’t he just kill himself now I mean his life a lot worse now. Also getting run over by a train isn’t the most popular way of suicide or so I’d like to think sounds painful n risky cause he did survive it if he really wanted to die I’m sure he would have hung himself or OD I dunno tho I just hope he can live in some sort of peace after all this I remember before hearing news he was saying he wanted to fight chuck liddell for retirement fight on Ariel show and he seemed in good place
