IE winning 51% of the election wouldn't mean the winner can then strip the other 49% of the electorate of voting rights.

I wouldn't go that far. They overlap a lot but you'll find examples of neither. Singapore is a conceptual democracy and republic, but it's in practice an electoral autocracy and republic. So not really both. Same with Turkey. But that's another thread.
