Marilyn Manson the current #metoo

With you. Music and cooking related things are my heartbeat but when I lived in a small town as a 13/14 year old a small record shop owner putting special edition 12" back for me so no one else could buy them was just wonderful. Nothing untoward, he just knew what I would want. Nothing online, you had to graft for it which made it all the more sweet when you got your end game.
Yeah when youy bought an album you listened to it 10000 times because you paid money for it and wanted it to be worth it

Now you can just download it and maybe skip around songs.

Im just saying, you needed to have dedication to be a fan of anything back then. You had to do research, and experiment.

Mechanical Animals let me down thematically, though some good tunes were on it.

I liked the evil carnival like feel of portrait and the spooky kids stuff, and then the religious zealotry aspect of Antichrist. Though I totally get your point. His character “evolved” to what should have been the coup de grâce to that character. All else afterwards was really forced feeling.
I definitley liked Antichrist image and vibe better, but i loved MA for what it was. It was so different, but then you get past that, and its a fuckin awesome record with great memorable tunes.

And dont get me started on the spooky kids demo stuff. I love that stuff, and would love to see them keep doing that.

This stuff just has an amazing vibe and nothing else gives it to me

Misery Machine on the demo is so much better than the album version

Yep. That demo was gold. Being from FL, where the band started, those demos were semi-easily available, along with old VHS bootlegs. Used to buy/sale/trade them at the local metal shop. Like you said in another post, it just made you listen until they broke to get your investment’s worth out of it. The hunt for new stuff was borderline magical then. Like holy shit! They just got something new that nobody has! Miss those days. Could reminisce all day about that part of those time ha

I used to be able to find imports and bootlegs around me. They were like $30 but I was mad for manson then and would buy anything I could find.

I would listen faithfully while reading the lyrics from the inlay. All my pocket money then Saturday job money went on music.

Just had a horrible relief thought, I was a massive MM fan and have band tattoos. Thank fuck I didn't get him, lol.

I kinda got into reading about serial killers around the same time i got into the band, cos the library had alot of cool books on em and this all before internet. The vibe the band was putting out def fit with the shit I was reading.

Yeah, that would have stunk for you… Band tatts never seem like a good idea. Like a sports team that could change cities or something. You lucked out.

I don't think U2 or Depeche Mode will let me down so I should be okay. I wonder how many people are regretting a MM one.
Lol at sport teams, anyone in Oakland knows that jam.

I exclusively got tattoos when I was young(15/18) and regret them all. Foolishness. Everyone dodging these tattoos bullets besides myself.

My mom was smart, she said you can do whatever you want when you finish college

by then i didnt even care to get em

It was all done on a massive scale,it was one hell of a ride. I have alot of fondness for him at that time.

I totally get it. And it was cool to read your post, because it was a near identical experience for me. it connected to a lot of people in a similar way. When I think back to my teen years Downward Spiral, Bloody Kisses, and Siamese Dream always hit the nostalgia. But Antichrist Superstar (even mechanical animals) hits in a different way. It was more then the albums (which were both great), it was the impact and controversy. How people reacted to the imagery. The reactions when the Tourniquet video came out or when people were talking about him getting a boob job after seeing Dope Show. It was truly a different time.

I remember when I was getting into music I was looking for something, and I didnt know what it was. Grunge was big,and all those drug/suicidal references and so on went over my head when im 12 yrs old,and they were kind of anti showmanship,so when Manson came out,it was totally about showmanship and I could def understand what the guy was on about, and id buy magazines that interviewed him,and I connected to it in a big way. I had other bands i loved like white zombie, but that band was just about vibes...no message connected to it like Manson. So i kind of found what I was looking for. It felt like a movement.

totally agree.

I don’t think the younger generation understands how controversial he was at that time. I really can’t think of musicians or groups who gotten as much publicity, based on shock value since him.

Off topic, but this thread hit the nostalgia for me (maybe the couple drinks helped too) but what an awesome time to be a young adult. I just remember going to record stores and finding NINs perfect drug single, type o negatives Cinnamon Girl single, or some random shit by the Cure. As awesome as the internet is, how instant everything is ruined the hunt to hear some elusive b-side, remix, live performances etc that you could only find on cd or vinyl singles.

Yeah, Manson was the final boss of the satanic panic in music and media. I think Qanon'ers have Lil Nas X now, lmao.

That’s really cool. Do you still have any of your old vinyl from what he held back for you?

Like an old drunk dumbass thinking back, I have maybe a handful of records still, but most gotten lost, traded, or stolen throughout the years.

I use to have this small hole in the wall record shop called Wyatt Earp records local to me. The workers turned me on to joy division , ministry, and others. But what I remember most is they specialized in bootleg records. Meaning live stuff, leaked studio demos thrown on a record or cd, and vhs tapes. I remember I worked as a bus boy as a teen and spent nearly my whole paycheck on a bootleg copy of NINs Broken snuff movie and a demo cd of Pretty Hate Machine. I kinda wish I had some of that stuff still, but It would probably just be sitting in a box tucked away somewhere if I did

My ex boyfriend burned my house down after I left him so sadly no, I lost everything. Vinyl and my flute were the worst to lose. I've started to rebuy a lot, it's been nice.

Getting your hands on bootlegs were quality! You felt all naughty! Funny you mention Ministry, last record shop I went to I walked out with Psalm 69. I'm an eternal Joy Division and New Order person.

no bullshit, I literally just ordered Psalm 69 yesterday from Amazon not kidding at all lol

I absolutely love joy division, but I could never get into New Order. I tried and tried, but I can’t force it. It’s Bernard Sumner.

I’ve been collecting vinyl pretty heavy for the last 8-9 yrs. maybe trying to recapture something. I don’t know, but it’s fun. You have record store day every year, rare stuff going back into print (like type o negatives Dead Again album) and it’s just nice having something physical and being able to enjoy an album as a whole.

it sucks that you lost everything, but on the flip side you are able to kinda discover it again, whenever you find that elusive record in the wild.

speaking of the bootleg records, I remember I would say something like “can I see your uhhhh Cure bootlegs” with some hushed tone, like we were making a drug deal or something. I mean it was a store that specialized in bootlegs. god I was a dumbass kid lol

Really?! Nice coincidence, right? Great minds. I hadn't listened to them in ages. It reminded me of Powerman, but mainly Ministry.

It IS fun, my other half orders a lot. Started buying boxsets from Goodwill. We aren;t poor but he found a Dream Theater box set with a ruksack for $10 knowing I would love it the other day, there's 2 CDs and a plectrum necklace so I was hooked immediately.
