Manti Te

Lol... Even if he wasn't "in on it" he's a liar. Have you read the piece?

It still makes a big difference to me whether or not the whole thing was concocted for publicity, or he realized at some point it was BS and tried to cover his tracks a bit and not look like a complete fool.

WTF?!? Truth really is stranger than fiction. My first thought also was, "must be gay."

Reminded me of this interview w/ a former NFL cornerback, Wade Davis. He's gay and knows of several gay NFL players who are sort of semi-out - not in public, and it's not discussed, but their teamates all know and don't care. As long as you work hard and play well, it's all good apparently.

I would say that's not a very likely theory. if you are gay and trying to live on the down low why would you construct this elaborate hoax that's gonna garner national attention and spotlight?

I agree it would make a difference. I'm leaning towards complete fabrication. The perpetrator of the hoax is "family". Not only that, but the story of her death coincided with his grandma's passing. I mean, you gotta be a sick fuck to capitalize on your grandma's death & use it as an out to cover up your fake girlfriend.

The information we have regarding the fake girlfriend came from T'eo & his family. Nobody would know about her if he wasn't talking about her to the media.

What's the matter with all of you. He isn't gay. Or if he is, it is unrelated to this gf thing.

He's just an entitled, bratty, lying, attention whoring, arrogant piece of shit who believed himself to be the smartest guy in the room.

I agree... I didn't even think o the gay angle. Projection?

Yeah, all the gay talk is out of place. Nothing in this story really points to anything like that in my opinion.

man that's kind of harsh. I don't see how you are jumping to those conclusions

I love this quote from the deadspin article...

There was no Lennay Kekua.
Lennay Kekua did not meet Manti Te'o after the Stanford game in 2009.
Lennay Kekua did not attend Stanford.
Lennay Kekua never visited Manti Te'o in Hawaii.
Lennay Kekua was not in a car accident.
Lennay Kekua did not talk to Manti Te'o every night on the telephone.
She was not diagnosed with cancer, did not spend time in the hospital, did not engage in a lengthy battle with leukemia.
She never had a bone marrow transplant.
She was not released from the hospital on Sept. 10, nor did Brian Te'o congratulate her for this over the telephone.
She did not insist that Manti Te'o play in the Michigan State or Michigan games, and did not request he send white flowers to her funeral.
Her favorite color was not white.
Her brother, Koa, did not inform Manti Te'o that she was dead. Koa did not exist.
Her funeral did not take place in Carson, Calif., and her casket was not closed at 9 a.m. exactly. She was not laid to rest.
Lennay Kekua's last words to Manti Te'o were not "I love you."

They'll get back together:

Quite true. Good point - but it's a logical point. And there doesn't seem to be much logic at all with this young man's thinking. Which leads me to my other initial impression - what psychiatric problem might this guy have??

Perhaps Pseudologia Fantastica (pathological lying)?

I'm not of the belief that he premeditated this whole hoax to advance his heisman candidacy. too many unanswered questions.

there are stanford players on twitter that talk about how he would ask them whether they knew his "gf" after they played each other back in 2010 or so. so if he's just lying then he's really committed.

If you follow the timeline of his comments, initially he talks about her being his "close friend" then it developed into "love of his life" so without a doubt he started embellishing the nature of the relationship. But that's not so unbelievable if u consider that he thought she died.

Whenever someone dies, there's always many people at the funeral claiming that they were the dead person's "best friend". we try and establish connection with the dead to contexualize our feeling even if the relationship never that strong..

other things like the fact even when he talked about his relationship with her he talked about things like sleeping on the phone with her. If you were gonna make up a relationship, I feel like you would go with more obvious routes. sleeping on the phone with someone isn't what comes to my mind when I try and conceive a relationship

Most convincingly the the Cardinal fullback's story about meeting "lennay kekua" at America Samoa suggest to me that Manti's not the sole mark of this hoax, unless he was actively trying to deceive other NFL players too which seems farfetched.

You also have to consider that this is a religious guy which indicate a certain level of gullibility. He believes in a god he can't see, so why not a girlfriend?

And know there's this:

Cardinals Player Says He Met T'eo's Dead Girlfriend

"This was before her and Manti," Maui'a said Wednesday evening. "I don't think Manti was even in the picture, but she and I became good friends. We would talk off and on, just checking up on each other kind of thing. I am close to her family. When she was going through the loss of her father, I was — I offered a comforting shoulder and just someone to bounce her emotions off. That was just from meeting her in Samoa."

Maui'a said Tuiasosopo — whom Maui'a believes is Kekua's cousin — introduced the two. After the initial meeting, Maui'a said he met her at an "after-party" for all of the athletes involved in the camp.

"She was tall," he said. "Volleyball-type of physique. She was athletic, tall, beautiful. Long hair. Polynesian. She looked like a model ... "

I'm having trouble processing what is happening.

Will wait for revistionist history version on ESPN Classic in 20 years.
