So how soon before Mr. Te'o comes out of the closet? I can't be the only one thinking that this was a "beard" attempt that got out of control.

There's just no way. He said in interviews "what her last words to him were", talked about who she was. He would talk to "her" through twitter. Now he's saying he was duped. Yet the "her" on twitter was an account created by a friend of his. Rumors are his friend a pastor is more then his friend and the "girl" was a cover.
 
i don't understand the gay angle. (lulz) if they wanted to be discreet, well, be discreet.
 
Crazy crazy shit. I'm sure this is just the beginning in one of craziest stories of the decade in sports. I hate to say it, but I can't wait to see what unfolds.

Because girls would be throwing themselves at him. And if he didn't have a GF he thought people might start questioning things. I mean if he is gay and wanted to keep closeted why not just say "I'm 100% focused on football right now and as a Mormon don't believe in sex before marriage".

But then he'd basically out himself as a 21 yr old virgin though but that didn't seem to hurt Tebow's draft stock or marketability.

Having a fake GF is an easy way to brush off any ladies trying to hook up with him, or any questions about his sexuality if he otherwise claimed he didn't have a GF but wasn't interested in having one either.

listening to Gene Wojciechowski on ESPN, it is obvious that Manti was NOT the victim of a hoax, but the perpetrator of a hoax!

Yup also football is such a masculine, macho sport. He's from a very religious Mormon family. Notre Dame is a very religious catholic institution. And his friend who made the fake twitter of "her" account is a pastor. So the guy who "duped" him was friend and is a pastor.
 
still doesn't make sense to do it to hide being gay.

at least not killing her off. that was done for publicity.
