A thought came to mind, and I can't find anything that shows "penalties". What happened if someone just said 'fuck it", and turned early to shoot the other guy in the back? (Honor/cowardice aside)

Apparently each duelist showed up with a friend as an enforcer of sorts. If someone cheated, the role of the enforcer was to shoot the cheater. I wonder if the cheater's enforcer would honour this or if he would also shoot the other enforcer...

I imagine if you cheat in a gun duel you get killed. Though the other guy would be dead anyway. So if you were into murder suicide then it might work out for you.

Also maybe you forfeit all your land and your servants ?? Like they take all your stuff and leave your family with nothing? You’d be a social outcast and a beggar if you were allowed to live. Also be charged with murder

It's only 1 shot right? What if the cheater only lands a non-fatal shot and the other guys survives? Maybe the land/servants are forfeit to him at that point?

They were immediately declared the winner, they were marked a yellabelly lowlander that dogs can't trust.
Then they either killed him right then and there, or forced him into exile and trusted that the cold would take him sooner or later.

I can't imagine more than a couple guys pulling that shit before considerable "pushback"

How many times did both guys miss entirely?

Did they race to reload or did they just beat the shit out of each other with their muskets? Someone said they both typically brought a guy to ensure fair play, who was the first dude to pay somebody's man to help them ambush a formidable mf'er 3 on 1?

I'm fascinated by the concept lol

If i recall the duel could be considered over if both missed, as both participants honor would be intact and they could backdown without risking getting fucked up. If someone still demanded satisfaction, I suppose it could continue.

Dueling evolved over time and location, so I'm sure there were all kinds of variations.

I know that most of the time you did bring witnesses so I guess if you were a coward and a cheater then word would spread quickly.

That's funny. We used this exact protocol on occasion growing up to ensure a fair fight.

That was some sort of mark of respect.

No one jumps in and it is a clean fight.

If you get whooped you get whooped,

the friends keep it from going too far

and then you shake hands (I guess sort of optional) and everyone goes their separate ways.

If all above is honored everyone leaves with respect including the person who lost the fight. And shit is squashed.

Decent system imo and probably been around for Hundreds of years or longer

Yeah except a lot of people didn't honor that. At least when I was in school.

You'd bring 2 buddies for backup and he'd bring 6, so when they jumped in your friends either didn't do shit, or they jumped in and got stomped along with you.

Then they all celebrate like they won a fair fight.

That sucks.

If you show up with 2 and they show up with 6 ... RUN.

I think a decent chunk of asswhoopings come from people with too much pride to haul ass.
____

I think part of the above premise that holds it together is the whole "honor" aspect.

All parties need to actually care to keep their reputation intact.

If you don't care about leaving the situation with dignity, why agree or show to a "duel" at all? Just jump them in whatever cheapshot unfair scenario you can find.

They're called the second, their also supposed to via the opponents second try to negotiate a peaceful resolution before the duel.

(Nothing like taking you oldest to a Broadway show and you get a Biggie homage about dueling)

According to Old West Historians ...

They didn't have gun duels.... 10 paces and shoot.

They just shot you in the back or when you were sleeping...
