Manti Te

What am I wrong about? That this is a silly story and shouldn't affect his career?

I beg to differ. Why can't you just admit that pro-sports are all about what you do on the court/field/ring to promote winning and nothing to do with what you do off of it?

The problem with Te'o is that his leadership was such an important part of what he was going to bring to a team. And what he did off the field here will likely affect whether his teammates see him as a leader, a schmuck or an ass.

I wouldn't sign that nutjob to my team, can't be good commercial wise. Who wants that pathalogical liar as the face of his product. Also i don't think his teammates would respect him,

Yes, why don't I just lay down and swallow your anecdotal examples that are neither comprehensively proving anything nor correct in the first place?

Each team is in the business of turning a profit while concurrently fielding a winning TEAM. That means assembling a collective group of players with a singular goal and effective interaction, who will not only outscore the opponents, but be welcomed by a paying audience.

Go google an asshole like Richie Incognito and then tell me it's all about talent.
or TO
or Chad Johnson and his wife.

I'll restate this more clearly because you don't get it: I'm not saying Te'o or any other assclown player with baggage can't play in the NFL, I'm saying it prohibits them from becoming a main player worthy of a secure contract or high draft pick. Why? Because NFL teams know that they need figurehead players to lead their team in the lockerroom and to sell Jerseys and tickets, and shitty PR makes some players ineligible for these positions until they can properly rehab their image (e.g. play at a reduced rate until the public can get over it) .

i think people are overreacting to what he did. it's an interesting story, and people get pissed when someone dupes them, it makes them feel stupid, but unless he orchestrated the whole thing from the beginning, long term it's not a big deal.

How about if he tells everyone it was just a prank. Then he can hug all the journalists and fans at the conferences just like how it works on Punk'd.

Again; Michael Vick.

All you guys want is to bring this guy down a few pegs. This Mormon from Hawaii who was an amazing HS Football player AND NCAA DI player for the #2 team in the country, who could have gone pro and instead stayed to play his senior year and lead his team to the BCS Championship game...yeah this guy had a fake gf and NOW HE MUST PAY!!!

Nothing about this stupid story takes away any of his accomplishments.

Nobody was was hurt by this story.

College and professional athletes of all talent levels have done far worse for far long.

But go ahead and argue that this guy is the :eek::eek::eek:file of college sports.

Take a few breaths, read over what we've said, and try again.

If it helps, go read up on Kevin Faulk.
Guy has a weed habit, but is one of the most beloved players in patriots history because he was a trustwrothy and likeable guy to his teammates and fans, despite being extremely mediocre physically.

No, I'm good. I'm with you guys. I think he should be banned from sports for his "unbelievable cruelty" lulz

I don't think anyone is saying it'll affect his career. But you'll be ignorant to say it doesn't hurt his draft stock. He could go on to be the goat lb, but he won't be a top 10 pick no more because of this.

not even close to the same situation. vick was already established in the league. when he went to the eagles, they didn't have to waste a draft pick on him, or sign him to a huge contract. also, he wasn't even a starter, he was backing up mcnabb. add to that, he had paid his due to society (lost his multi-million dollar contract, went to federal prison for over a year, etc.)

find a situation like this, and then let's talk.

I believe that his draft order will be a reflection of his talent and potential and not his internet dating profile.

Nice ejector seat misstatement .
Just fyi, you won't be a 1st rounder in the Mayberry Debate Draft :icon_cry2.

You're right. It's not close to the same situation. Michael Vick is a felon who went to prison for killing dogs. But its not about money, right?

Peter Warrick was an admitted thief and got drafted 4th overall.

teams probably thought they didn't have to worry about p'dub stealing anything after he became an nfl wideout.

do you even know the argument you're making anymore?

Unlike Te'o, Warrick was reknowned for his pure talent.
The guy was a STUD, and tried to pull a department store switcharoo on some petty merchandise.
He was drafted that high, incorrectly so by the Bungals, based on his ability to run routes and beat defenders to thrown football.
Te'o has nowhere near the talent, and is expected as a linebacker to lead his team on defense.

As for the "different time and place" quip, it actually is quite true too.
These days it is much easier for dirt on players to cause a fuss with social media and 24/7 cable networks.

Winning = Money.
Thats all any Athletic Directors or Team Owners care about.
What Te'o offers a team has not been altered by his situation.
My argument has been consistant.

btw, nice dodge

he was basically a bust in the NFL. Irvin from the seahawks did two weeks in jail and got drafted 15th. football players are scumbags. football coaches know this. they care about work ethic and results. they are only worried about a guys character if they think it will prevent him from playing games.
