According to the article she was a Staffordshire Bull Terrier and not a Pitbull. There is a big difference.

I've known a couple of staffies and they were as sweet as anything. Fighting lineage should have been bred out.

With that said, that dude was way too patient, and he'll suffer for it for the rest of his life. I would have smashed her in as soon as those teeth clamped on.

Nicest dog I’ve ever known was a Staff, absolute baby of a dog
They aren’t normally bred all fucked up like a lot pit bulls or XL Bully types
Taking in any rescue dog is a risk, especially fresh off the street
And of course a strong athletic dog with a high prey drive, can do a lot more damage than a lot of breeds
Most likely abuse from previous owner severely messed that dog up
