not really. BJ Has sick striking, he could use his BJJ more but his striking isn't losing his fights, it's his awful endurance and cardio.

after watching weidman vs galvao, i don't think anyone without extensive wrestling background could take him down.
when weidman did take it down, maia was looking to get back up.
at 185, i'd say weidman is a close 2nd to chael in wrestling

He was competitive in the first fight with Edgar and Nick outworked him in their fight. BJ held his own fine, probably even took the first round. Nick Diaz is a cardio machine though and no way could Penn keep up with his pace.
BJ's jiu jitsu wouldn't have beat Edgar, he got outwrestled and outgrappled too. Badly.
People always outwork BJ. Every time he loses, this is pretty much why. Either they outwork him during the fight, during training before the fight (GSP), or both.
