Maia Prayer Vigil

Well, I thought they both lost. If that's possible.

Weidman had a 30 pound weight cut in 10 days. It's amazing he even fought. It wasn't a pretty fight, but Weidman's got lots of love from Zuffa for stepping up twice now on a week's notice.

im ridin' this bitch til the wheels fall off

I salute you bro

Don't stray brothers. Maia tests us to display what the intent of our heart is and if we really love him. We shall remember all the way which the "Playboy" led us through competitions, bar room brawls and dojo raids, that he might humble us, test us, to know what is in our hearts, whether we keep jiu jitsu as our commandment or not.

K1 Maia will soon rest and make way for the resurrection of ADCC Maia.

Amen.

Maia will now go and seek out the illustrious Rickson Gracie to train under the waterfall of purity to cleanse his soul of the evil kickboxing demons.

To return once more, re-awakened to his god-given mission on earth:

To choke the neck and twist the limbs of those not believing in the church of the gentle art.

maia been training with cro cop or something?? he is aware he has a right hand, isnt he??

Strikers are born, not made. Unfortunately for top BJJ guys trying to transition to MMA. With BJJ, if you train enough you can become awesome even with mediocre athletic ability (specially with, cough cough, the pharmaceutical aid that dominates BJJ's higher ranks nowadays). With striking, if you weren't born with the genetics and build for fast hands, power, and chin, all the training in the world ain't going to give you them.

Top level BJJ guys who lack athleticism would be better served working hard on their wrestling, rather than their striking.

Lol looked like he really believed in his stand up! Jds boxing coach fhl? I can't believe he did not want grapple!! What a fucking disappointment

He looked like he had been training his stand-up with Leonard Garcia.

I always want to ask these grapplers who tun into mediocre strikers (Maia, Sherk, etc.) if it is because their bodies are shot to hell and can't take the grappling anymore. Maia got up with ease but seemed clueless to the fact that he was losing and that he had opportunities to turn the ground fight in his favor when they were on the floor.

He could have built toward a big money rematch with Chael in the future...

I dont know what the fuck is wrong with maia, he says every time hes going to go back to his roots, and every single fight he does the same bullshit, trying to strike.. WTF! I know taking wiedman down was probably pretty hard, and I dont think he couldve done just by shooting relentless over and over again, the best way was probably by using some of his "crisp" striking to set up something kind of throw or trip, but he even refused to that.. I think someone is fucking lying and kissing his ass telling him that he is the best striker ever to step on planet earth...

the same shit it happened to bj is happening to maia....

For f*cks sake Maia!

Man, I am so disappointed. Even pulling guard would have been better than that shit. I say the mods trash this bloody thread and we make a new one for toquinho.

Maia is dead to the BJJ world! Dead I tell you.

It's funny too because when do we ever see a world class striker become so enamored with grappling that all he does is go out and try to grapple people?

The lead hand is weak when you are a southpaw facing an orthodox striker, instead you generally just get pawing jabs colliding, with the straight punch (for Maia, a left straight) when you get an angle.

Some exceptional boxers can get a good lead hook off in a southpaw/orthodox matchup, but not many, certainly not Maia.

So that's why he looked like Crocop, but at least Crocop has a fast and powerful straight, and a kicking game to back it up with, whereas Maia's straight is terrible -- weak, slow, you name it. There was no way he could win a boxing match against an orthodox fighter with any punching ability.

after watching weidman vs galvao, i don't think anyone without extensive wrestling background could take him down.

when weidman did take it down, maia was looking to get back up.

at 185, i'd say weidman is a close 2nd to chael in wrestling

I think it was the fight with Anderson that changed everything for Maia. He was embarrassed because he let his opponent mock him about getting off the floor. I think theres a mental edge strikers have over grapplers about what constitutes a "real man's way of fighting". I think he's falling in that trap.

not really. BJ Has sick striking, he could use his BJJ more but his striking isn't losing his fights, it's his awful endurance and cardio.
