Maia Prayer Vigil

not really. BJ Has sick striking, he could use his BJJ more but his striking isn't losing his fights, it's his awful endurance and cardio.

actually edgar beat him twice standing, so did diaz..

after watching weidman vs galvao, i don't think anyone without extensive wrestling background could take him down.

when weidman did take it down, maia was looking to get back up.

at 185, i'd say weidman is a close 2nd to chael in wrestling

And yet Maia managed to throw Chael to the ground with ease. He didn't even give it a proper try against Weidman. in the third he half-heartedly reached for Weidman's hips, but that was about it. No shooting, no looking for the clinch (he went for his silly little knee instead every time), no trying to get Weidman against the fence to setup a takedown, no attempts to keep it on the ground when it went there.

Even if he can't get a takedown his go to attack in BJJ has always been to pull half guard and work either to a sweep or a single from there. He did it in the UFC in his early fights repeatedly as well. Even if he hasn't got much of a shot he did manage to snatch a leg at least once in that fight.

FTFY.

Maia's half guard is so tight and good at controlling his opponent, even in his Munoz fight he was able to use half guard with underhooks to prevent being punch in the face ( and Munoz has some scary GnP)

Maybe he was scared of Weidman's D'arce choke because he was so gassed out.

Anyone know what he had to say in the post fight conference?

He was competitive in the first fight with Edgar and Nick outworked him in their fight. BJ held his own fine, probably even took the first round. Nick Diaz is a cardio machine though and no way could Penn keep up with his pace.

BJ's jiu jitsu wouldn't have beat Edgar, he got outwrestled and outgrappled too. Badly.

People always outwork BJ. Every time he loses, this is pretty much why. Either they outwork him during the fight, during training before the fight (GSP), or both.

Dear Tom Cruise,

Protect Maia and bring him victory with all your Scientology magic.

if UFC was one round BJ would be the undisputed p4p champ lol

I'm going to ask my granddad if we have any voodoo stuff we can use to help him win.

I hope he has a better showing this time and really uses his Jiu-Jitsu intelligently like he used to.

However i still think he'll get beat pretty easily by DHK. Just a bad matchup for him. Like most good fighters at welterweight.

With Maia turning to the original Alliance Brotherhood ... by training with Marcelo and Leo Viera ... I retain my faith!!!
