That's not how custom ordering a brand new car works in many instances now a days. Especially when its not built yet and no real collateral or firm ETA for the collateral exists yet. It varies from dealer to dealer & brand to brand .Even personal profile to personal profile.
Otherwise people would be stuck paying interest on a car loan they don't have a car for, for an unknown amount of time. Or one's profile can change to where they qualified for a car one year then in the many months to a year it took for the manufacturer to build the car they may have hurt their credit and or income.
But all that is kind of besides the point. Tesla has their own DTC model which has mountains & mountains of complaints.

I dont know what the contract (which he signed) said but the post says that he doesn't have the funds as of yet due to unforseen circumstances.... i don't know what the custom part was but there is usually financing at some point. If he was going to pay the whole thing then he's not some poor schmuck buying a car to get to work. Financing must be possible here and start when car is received but haven't done it so dont know the process. I have had a few things done in the past and they add it to the total and the total is financed when I leave the lot. Either way it sounds like the buyers issue and if it doesn't resolve then Tesla cannot move forward but may have already done work and obv overhead costs.

If there is nothing in the contract that says non-refundable then the man has a case and should take musk up on that. Or dealership. If I owned a company... I was acting COO over one... i usually absorb any overhead costs spent to keep the customer if i havent gone too far into the process.. But I also operated company to company sales so that's different. It's the long game there. Obv there are limits but yeah if there are no contractual obligations or "non-refundable" clauses for custom work then he should try and recoup.

If I work for company A that has me working 70hr weeks and leave it for company B that pays the same and has me working 40, that isn't being lazy. Its being smart.

If people actually listen to him, he is a pretty big progressive, in some areas.
