She was raised by Portuguese speaking parents and yet, didn't get an accent and forgot how to speak proper English until 3 years ago..........................................................

My wife is Brazilian. She was born and raised there, and moved to the US at 19. She didn't speak a word of english. She doesn't even talk like that. You can tell english isn't her first language, but she doesn't have the typical "Brazilian that mostly speaks portugese but is trying to speak english" accent. She says r's like h's sometimes, but it's actually hard to place her accent if you don't know where she's from. It could be because her english is really good...don't really know.

My point is, accents develope differently or everybody. So Dern might be faking an accent...who really cares? Does it adversely affect your life in any way? Maybe she does just speak a ton of portuguese and she's around Brazilians all the time. It's possible she picked up their accent. I don't know and I don't care.

People care because they have too much time on their hands. There is zero way to assess if she’s faking an accent. The whole subject is the dumbest thing I’ve heard in about two months.

She's one of these people who takes great pride in her origins. She probably wishes she was born in Brazil and grew up there instead of the USA. I imagine the fact she's not a real, true, proper Brazilian probably annoys her a little.

My parents and sister were born in Russia and that was their native tongue for 30 plus years. They still speak in Russian. I can speak Russian and read/write. I don't have a thick Russian accent and my English certainly didn't devolve in my 30s because I started to revisit it. She is trying to be something she's not... She is trying to fit in with landed immigrants.

I just find it weird that she would want to have an accent to a 3rd world country...I think it has to do with her being so tied in with the bjj crowd and Brazil being the birth place of bjj...she wants that to be her persona...even though it's fake as hell...but, she can speak however she likes...doesn't make her a bad person...I'd say it makes her a bit fake..but, so be it.

Exactly this...I'd say because of her being so into bjj for so long..that's been her life for a very long time...she wants to be associated with brazil and thought of as brazilian. even if she isn't...

If you look at how Arnold speaks....Arnold has been in this country since he was like 18 or 19 years old...he's like 70 now...and he still speaks with a fairly heavy austrian accent...so all these years in America, didn't rid him of his accent...That's over 50 years of being around english speaking people...and yet, he's never lost his accent...so this goes to show how fake the girl is.

Dern is a joke. I won‘t support somebody who pretends to be somebody else. I know people who have lived abroad for years and who haven‘t developped such an accent.

It's almost like individual experiences differ and the innumerable variables involved in each individual's personal experiences influence them in very individual ways.

In 2013 she talked like a girl from Arizona. In 2014 she talked like a girl from Hio de Janeiro.

She's not an anonymous person. There is video of her speaking throughout the last 8 years. It didn't develop over time. Some time in late 2013 she made a decision to pretend to have an accent, for whatever reason.

Just because that is plainly obvious to some of us, and we care to point it out, doesn't mean we're assholes or triggered. It says more about the people arguing that it's not fake. You're just difficult for no reason.

i'm not saying it isn't fake, just a possibility that it isn't.

To the contrary, it's a pretty significant topic if you're a fight fan, and a fighter who's being heralded as the next best thing suddenly has a completely different accent.

Definitely something that stands out, and something that's gonna be questioned to some degree or another.

Oh, it's absolutely different than if they were at the same weight. I'm just saying that match doesn't say much, good or bad, about her skill level, since she got choked out four times before and only won this one on a technicality. Yes, the matchup is "unfair," but in their meetings, what happened was what was supposed to happen - she lost.

Now, if she consistently beat Garcia, that would be a different story altogether. That's just not what happened here.
