mackenzie dern explains her bjj gimmick

She is much like an actor doing an accent for a role..she's playing a role...not sure why though...many many actors can do accents or even take away their normal accents...russel crowe for example has a big time Australian accent normally, but in the movies he has no accent....what she is doing is totally on purpose.

It probably was on purpose when she started. Now its probably natural.

I used to have a more high pitched voice when I was younger. I would hear myself in recordings and hate the way I sounded. So I started intentionally using a deeper voice. And now that deeper voice is just my regular voice, I have to put extra effort in to make myself sound like I did before. People can change.

Paige lies to cancer kids but let's crucify Dern for embellishing an accent.

Anyone attacking her accent is kinda ignorant, when people move to another area where everyone talks with an accent, they end up talking that way too, happens all the time in the US when someone moves to the south then ends up with at least a partial southern accent. Dern lived and trained with people speaking portuguese & broken english for years, so why is anyone surprised it rubbed off?

this example doesnt correlate with dern situation, she was born and raised in arizona where she graduated high school, she has always been bilingual in portuguese

what people find odd is that she started speaking 'broken english having lived in brazil a lusophone country, for such a short period

Shertards nitpicking on something utterly insignificant as usual. Her accent triggers them so hard they are even willing to discredit her BJJ skill which is probably the best in current WMMA.

Accents can drift in and out to some degree depending on environment (English/Spanish speaker here).

However, changing environments doesn't influence your syntax and understanding of grammatical structure in the other language. That's where the bullshit is located.

Look at all the sherdog sociolinguistists crawling out of the woodwork <Lmaoo>

It’s hilarious how people who don’t even know Dern appear to think that they would know enough about her to know what her voice ‘should’ sound like.

As if it’s a big surprise that a person with Brazilian parents has a brazilIan twang to their voice, much like many people with parents who are not native to the country that they live in.

Threads like these make me think the majority of sherdog have never even talked to a woman outside of school.

The hate for women on here is hilarious.

From the interview, it's not her accent, it's her faking of broken English, syntax, grammar, and pretending to forget words, that appeared abruptly in 2013.

6x "you know,' in the first 40 seconds

Constantly pretending to forget English word for...u know

"She was a graple..let an had just came off, ha , come off, 2 losses I think, um, yeah, right now u know I don't know whats a good match up for me u know, I ask oh, it's better to fight a grappler you know ?

Grappling is a best match up or maybe it's a puncher, u know, but they say, like, it's better you know like this, you know,
Your accent?
Yea you know, it's so flattering, know, hasent seen it u know, an I won't watch it, u know, but I surround it you know

How you know, I'm talking, you know, after my fight they pay more attention to my fight you know, you know I think it will...forgets word..."pass. You know"
C'mon u know, crazy, u know, for sure like, awesome performance u know, everything goes good, I don't...danger and everyfing, for sure."

It shouldn't bother me but if she has an accent because her parents are both Brazilian then why did she talk like a valley girl with ZERO hint of an accent not too long ago and tonight she'll probably need a translator =/ Like I said it shouldn't annoy me but it does. It's kind of a funny/cringy annoying though, not a I hope she gets her ass kicked type of annoying. My intuition tells me she's full of shit so whether I want it to or not its something that annoys me about her. It's like CB Dollaway's face,he seems like a cool guy and I root for him sometimes but for some reason his face bothers me.It's petty and stupid when I think about it but if something bothers you it bothers you, what can I say.

"be proud of who you are and where you came from"

So, brazil?

Her parents are brazillians dude. She's dating a brazillian. Her entire life is brazillian jiu jitsu. She trains in brazil for nearly like the last decade.

Im not sure if its fake or not but a silly thing to care about.

I'm not talking about
I lived abroad and have gained accent. Stop talking about things you don't really know. You probably don't even speak multiple languages. Murica born most likely lol.

I speak the official usa language....ENGLISH....

‘You know’ is a common linguistical filler used in the English language. Fillers can also become more pronounced at times of pressure, for example doing the most media work you ever have prior to the biggest fight of your life.

And just generally, if you went to some parts of the UK you’d presumably think that everyone was faking their accents, you know? <Lmaoo>
