Edit: her issue is different than rounding out some vowels or picking up a bit of a drawl. Her entire sentence structure, word choice, pause, and use of “like” are distinctly associated with Brazilians who speak English as a second language. Now, if she speaks only in Portuguese with these people, why would she develop the way they speak English? Answer: she’s pleasing her demographic. Fake. Embarrassing.

Not saying its the case with her, it could be fake but her father is brazilian, all I´m saying its common to have a weird accent if you speak in other languages, I´m sure a lot of Americans who moved to UK have somewhat changed their accent over time and its the same language, now if you were surrounded by brasilians talking english maybe you could pick the annoying accent of us talking in English.

My wife is Brazilian. She was born and raised there, and moved to the US at 19. She didn't speak a word of english. She doesn't even talk like that. You can tell english isn't her first language, but she doesn't have the typical "Brazilian that mostly speaks portugese but is trying to speak english" accent. She says r's like h's sometimes, but it's actually hard to place her accent if you don't know where she's from. It could be because her english is really good...don't really know.

My point is, accents develope differently or everybody. So Dern might be faking an accent...who really cares? Does it adversely affect your life in any way? Maybe she does just speak a ton of portuguese and she's around Brazilians all the time. It's possible she picked up their accent. I don't know and I don't care.

Was she raised in Brazil at an early age and then moved to the US later in life (as a teen?) It seems plausible that a teenager would feel pressure to fit in and put a lot of effort into speaking like the Americans she went to school with. Could be a situation where she matured and got closer to her roots (around Brazilians more, speaking and thinking Portuguese constantly as mentioned) and stopped putting the effort into speaking like an American.
