That’s literally not the perception of Islam, just another fake narrative. The perception has always been that he’s an entertaining fighter, in fact many folks made it a point to say he was the ONLY entertaining Dagi fighter.

Islam was fishing for subs the entire time but JDM did a good job of shutting them down before they became serious threats. To me, it’s a perfect example of how fighters on top get a lot more criticism though it’s actually the fighter on the bottom preventing things from happening.

I’ve said this in other threads, but a lot of the criticisms of the Dagis by a group of posters here are 100% bad faith, and you can tell because when there is a Dagi fighter who meets all the criteria they ask for in a fighter, they will deliberately and blatantly lie about them just to continue being critics. This dude literally said islam had a reputation as a boring fighter lol. Another poster accused Islam of not going for finishes even though he has 8 finishes in the last 10 fights!!! Islam was fishing for SAFE subs the entire time. There's a difference between what GSP did and what Islam did. GSP went for full-on Kimura's, armbars, etc. He was willing to take risks and give up position to finish fights.

Islam prioritizes safety and control. When was the last time you saw Islam give up position for an armbar? He fishes for those non-threatening Kimuras because he doesn't want to give up position. He likes the D'Arce choke and arm triangle because they can be set up with minimal risk from half guard & side control, without risking a scramble and losing position. Islam fights safe to prioritize control, not finish the fight.

Islam only gets the submission when people make mistakes give him easy submissions. This usually happens because people get frustrated being held down, and try to stand up. That's why you can't just stand up against Islam. JDM came in well prepared for Islam's tricks and defended successfully. And Islam never tried to mix it up and go for a submission that could cost him position.

No. I criticize the caucuses fighters in general because most of them are boring. They lay on top of their opponents until their opponents get frustrated and try to stand up, and give up their backs. When you successfully defend like JDM and DDP, they refuse to take risks and try to finish the fight.

Khabib was different. I have so much reverence for Khabib because that guy WANTED to finish fights. He actually tried to advance positions, pass guard (to mount), and opened up for huge punches on the ground. Khabib broke fighters with his dominance.

Islam just lays on people and waits for them to get frustrated and try to stand up, then he fishes for his easy safe submissions. Otherwise if you do what JDM did, he just blankets you. Khabib would have finished JDM.

He's plodding forward and trying to throw haymakers, willing to lay down and go to the ground to try for a submission. But his opponent keeps refusing to engage, just dancing around him landing jabs and leg kicks for 15 more minutes [to win a safe decision].

These fights just made me miss Khabib. Sadly I don't think we will ever see another fighter like him. He's the #1 GOAT MMA fighter pound for pound of all time in my books.

I must admit I was a dirty Conor McGregor fan and I am ashamed of that. I didn't appreciate Khabib while we had him.
