Mackachev vs Topuria won’t happen

Islam: 8 finishes in last 9 fights

Sherdog: Islam refuses to go for the finish!

Dagestan derangement syndrome is a real thing lol.

A lot of pain tonight haha as Islam tied the all time consecutive win record.

If you think those were real submission attempts then we should count one heel hook attempt at the end of the first round for JDM too.
In reality there were no real submission attempts.

He could have easily just have laid and prayed like many boring grapplers do, but even those failed attempts put him at risk for an escape.

Did you also not see that RNC with the arm trapped by the leg? That is a very high percentage submission if you manage to get the arm trapped., I was very surprised JDM was able to escape it.

Dude was threatening the darce the whole time, JDM was just defending it well. He also had at least two kimura and arm triangle attempts.
Islam barely did shit for most of the fight especially the last rounds , Islam was throwing rabbit punches to keep activity but he wasn’t trying to finisH LMAO. Snore fest pillow fight.

What about the 5th round where Islam completely stopped going for submissions and waited for timer to run ?

That’s literally not the perception of Islam, just another fake narrative. The perception has always been that he’s an entertaining fighter, in fact many folks made it a point to say he was the ONLY entertaining Dagi fighter.

Yup. Amusing to see posters like that guy type away through tears as they're struggling to deal with this result haha

The UFC isn’t going to sacrifice one of their biggest stars in Illia Topurino , to the Wet Blanket gods.

It just doesn’t make sense, nobody wants to see Islam lay and pray Topuriano for 25 minutes, and Islam refuses to go for finishes.

Islam almost ended the fight so many times, the head kick, them sub attempts.
JDM didn't do much, not on the feet or on the ground.

That RNC in round 4 is very much a fight ending position, the fifth round kinda sucked but Islam had it in the bag at that point.

The fight won't happen because Ilia is too small of a fight for Islam to accept now.

How he gonna fight a fuckin 145er at 170 lbs?

Give him Shavkat or Usman and then let him retire to everlasting glory.

Top can fight Arman. That's a fun sized fight.

Of course I saw him trapping the arm, but there was no submission attempt. You need to understand the difference between control and working towards to a submission attempt and a real submission attempt. I know it looked like he was working towards a dominant position to get a submission, which is his style but he never really committed to a submission attempt, because of the risk of losing position and of course part of it was JDM being very aware of the situation and being able to defend everything really early, before there was any real danger.

Toupria is a young guy. He should try to clean out 155 and wait until Islam retires to move up.
Keep in mind how little money these guys make

Illia just wants to get a quick 3 million for the Islam fight and quit. It’s wack but smart at the same time. I don’t think Dana gonna give him the fight though because Illia telegraphed his intent to retire young.

Smaller Burns and Shorter Usman were able to counter-grapple Chimaev. Both ended up striking quite decent in those fights, but still lost.
Smaller, shorter Tsarukyan was able to counter-grapple Makhachev, but still lost.
Shorter Volkanovski did okay in the first fight against Makhachev, but still lost.

Sometimes the smaller and/or shorter fighters are better at counter-grappling these elite grappling gurus.
Topuria might be the one that finally solves the puzzle and get the KO.
But Makhachev is quite precise and good with striking. He could use his grappling threat to set up Topuria and get the KO instead.

(Martins got nice knockdown on Islam and win. But that was an early stoppage by the ref. Islam was still ready to fight and defend. I hate early stoppages.)

This is a valid criticism, he's no Oliveira who will try riskier attempts but I consider the position over submission to just be good grappling fundamentals. The style is to go slower, wear down the opponent and then always pressure for a submission opening. I think Khabib is a little better than Islam in doing the style but he follows the same principles. I was also a Damian Maia fan so you can see where I'm coming from.

What I don't appreciate is the lay'n'pray style like Belal or Colby, that is bullshit grappling as they don't even putting up a facade of a submission attempt.

Islam didn't get it here but I don't think you can criticize him seriously as not going for it, he has plenty submissions and KOs in his resume that speak for themselves.

I agree, and I didn’t criticize him, I was just answering the original question of how many submission attempts were in the fight.

Now if I am allowed to criticize a little (the fan girls are getting mad anyway), his grappling style has a risk to be boring, because in reality he is no submission wizard and doesn’t actually have unstoppable submission technique. Most of his submissions are done on a compromised opponent (very tired or rocked) and with force and power, not on a fresh opponent with pure technique. It’s not wrong, it’s very effective like that, but he is not a submission artist like many people like to claim.

The coping is hilarious lol

When Merab beats Umar, Merab all of a sudden becomes the most entertaining fighter in the world. Islam, who’s objectively more entertaining than Merab, is now “boring”. Their tears will nourish me for atleast a week lol.
