Media Lomachenko officially retires

He could never come close to the hype he got sadly. His three losses stick out really bad to me. Haney fight was really close so I guess I can give that a passish. but the other two just stick out so bad.

He was fun when he was able to fight a certain style of boxer but other times I was like "he's really good this is fun" but I feel he I wont think back on him as fondly as others.
I’ve grown forgiving of the 3 losses as time has gone on. Salido was mfn Salido, nuff said, and Teo and Haney have proven their class in the current field, Loma took his lumps like a man, let his hands go, and beat the fuck out of Kambosos. That’s all LW would give him. Tank pussed out and so did Shakur, and Teo/Haney took their wins and ran. Meanwhile Haney getting dropped by Garcia, Teo making “wise decisions”, Tank losing to Roach in everyone’s eyes, and Shakur jabbing non-compelling jobbers for 12 straight rounds… obviously all of them turned out so much better not fighting Loma lol

Imo He coulda won some of those fights or maybe even a rematch or two, certain LWs refusing to mix it up with him even in his twilight years says a little about when he was red hot and his mid competition that got criticized. Maybe that’s all his team could scrape up all along. Glad he had the fights we DID get to see, but it should have been so much more.

I'd forgive him if he was treated like a typical really good fighter but the hype sort of made it hard for me. He was a very good fighter but he was never going to be what people wanted him to be. Pro and amatuers are a lot diffrent. he did do a lot in boxing though. but I dont think of him as an ATG

Totally fair

One of the most skillful fighters of all time. I don't think he is an ATG but he had ATG skills, if that makes sense.

I also have seen and heard stories of his crazy athleticism when he was younger. This dude could do one-handed chin-ups, swim a length of the pool on a single breath, do crazy handstands (think of what Beterbiev does, but hands only). Definitely not the fastest, strongest, toughest or biggest puncher but his well-roundedness may be unmatched.

In terms of the torch, I think Bam Rodriquez was definitely influenced by Loma and seems to be carrying his 3-D footwork forward.

He's definitely the type to retire and stay retired. He was awesome at 125/30 but struggled a little at 135 although still looked great. But he was one dimensional and it was often frustrating watching him. When he was figured out, he just couldn't find another path, although he was so good at what he did it usually didn't matter.

He looked awesome against Kambosos but it's a good decision. I'd hate to see him possibly lose, especially by KO against Davis. Prime for prime, Davis doesn't stand a change. Davis lacks heart and Loma would drown him. He'd quit on his stool, if not get KO'd. Desperate shame we couldn't have seen that fight happen 5 years ago.

Arguably the greatest amateur ever and had an amazing pro career despite turning pro late. Great to watch, unbelievable style. Imo he should only have 1 loss

However, he was being called the GOAT way too prematurely and is anything but. Still a fantastic talent and HOF Great

hope he enjoys His retirement

Tank vs Loma would've been exciting when that was the fight to make but I actually would've preferred Loma vs Mikey back then. The style clash would've been interesting. Too bad we never got it. At one point in time both were unified champs at LW so they could've fought for undisputed. Instead, Mikey vacated his titles and moved up.

I was never Lomachenko's biggest fan, but holy shit this thread reads like a 'never that good' thread you'd find on the Heavies.

A real Playa Hater's ball.

That’s a really good point, I forgot all about Mikey and the buzz for that and then nothing but losses to Spence and Sandor Martin.

it was the right move to retire , his lack of punching power would end in more robberies against him , he had a great career despite what haters say,

He's a first-ballot HOFer but not an ATG in the pros. In the amateurs he was arguably the greatest boxer ever. Had he turned pro years earlier and not climbed the divisions so fast he might've had an even better pro career. Unfortunately he was injury prone. He had to undergo 2 shoulder surgeries, one immediately after the Linares fight & the other right after the Teo fight. That didn't help him any.
I guess its a bit subjective, but being legitimately the best guy in 3 different divisions is pretty special. He wasnt a huge beast at 126 either so I think he could have done it at 122 as well.

True. The Hall of Fame does factor in amateur credentials. Laszlo Papp was a 3x Olympic gold medalist but didn't do anything in the pros due to the circumstances. He really got into the Hall on the strength of his amateur creds alone. Lomachenko has extensive amateur & pro credentials.

It's going to be difficult to watch anything below 147 going forward. There's no one that excites me in those lower weights anymore. No Rigo and no Loma, this is basically the end of Rome.

There are plenty of talented and exciting guys below Welter. Maybe they don't have the thoroughbred amateur pedigrees those 2 had but that's not a big deal.

I'll only watch Haney if I find out he's been knocked out, in which case I'd watch the highlights. Tank is mid. Inoue is a big fish in a small pond.

What about Bam, Nakatani, Andy Cruz, Keyshawn Davis (who just missed weight and was stripped unfortunately), Curmel Moton, Abdullah Mason (who is fighting tonight), etc? I disagree that Inoue is just a big fish in a small pond. He's a generational type of talent. In fact, Pacquiao has said that he reminds him of himself when he was younger. He may even become the first 3 division undisputed champion at some point.

Anyone who watched Lomachenko fight knew they were witnessing something special. We won't see a talent like that again.
sorry, i disagree. i got nothing bad to say about lomachenko, but he's one of the most overhyped, overblown and overrated fighters in history. basically a pretty good fighter that the media tried to sell us as a "great" fighter. he never came close.

sounds like you have a personal grudge against haney. did he hurt your feelings? is he responsible for your life's frustrations and failures? what's up with that?
