DOFP was everything Logan wasn't. Logan was well crafted, stylistically, but hollow inside. DOFP had much more heart IMO. The endings were both positive, but I didn't have the emotional connection in Logan that I did in DOFP.

In many ways, Logan was the superior film.. But it was so disconnected from the rest of the series. You could feel it. Whereas DOFP was EVERYTHING. It's a time travel film done right. The culmination of every X-Men film before it... All the characters were there.

Really found Logan's ending positive?

Again I enjoyed DOFP, it was a great film but I just thought the direction they took LOGAN was a complete 180 compared to the other X-Men films.

Honestly the only part in DOFP that got me emotional were like the last 15 minutes. Mainly because of Magneto's dialogue with Charles and Logan seeing Jean again.

I can see why an X-Men fan would prefer DOFP for exactly the reasons you mentioned.

I'm not really an X-Men fan so seeing many characters, material, etc doesn't get me excited.

The little kids made it to the sanctuary.

Canada LOL

Okay, I can see why it would be considered positive on that note but honestly...after all that happened...fuck those little mutants lol.

The only kid I cared about was Laura.

I didn't prefer it because "I'm an X-Men fan".. You say like as though I'm an avid comic book reader or something. I've simply seen the movies in the series before it, and I resonate with the history and relationships cultivated that all come together in DOFP.

Simple little things like Future Logan interacting with Past Xavier for the first time. These sort of transcendent depths are such that Logan does not have.

Logan on one hand has that artistic expression of ambiguity by not having much of a lead up to the world they are now in... But on the other hand they have a disconnected universe that does itself no favors. It was like I was sitting in the theater trying to get emotionally attached... But there just wasn't enough there to care.

When I think back about it... I see a beautifully stylistic western that is soulless.

Maybe because he had become so much of a shell of his former rock of Gibraltar wise wizard self, it was shocking. Alas, shocking in the sense that it leaves you feeling numb, not heartbroken.

Lol I feel you take "X-Men fan" as an insult.

You resonating with the history and relationships throughout the franchise is more than I can claim. I never really cared for any other X-Men character besides Wolverine or Charles mainly because I love the actors who portrayed them.

Which makes LOGAN even more impressive that they just introduced X-23 and I felt more attached to her than any other X-Men character besides Logan and Charles.

The difference between DOFP and some other X-Men films are that they are good/great comic book films in it where as LOGAN was a great film about a comic.

As for a beautifully stylistic western that is SOULESS? We all have our opinions and it is what it is. I have never felt so emotional about a "comic book" film in my life. Beautiful film.

I don't know how anyone can watch Logan's heartbreaking inability to say goodbye to Charles and not be moved.

Definitely.

After repeated viewings there are many scenes that will get you once you're not in awe at the first viewing and you actually break everything down.

Examples:

When Logan tells Charles that he wasn't the one who killed him. Jeezus! When I first saw it I was like damn, but after repeated viewings I was like<{boneytears}>.

Many people may not have felt that much emotion for this scene but when the father temporarily takes out X-24 and tries to shoot LOGAN, only to have run out of bullets and drop dead; that was another scene that hits a bit harder on repeated viewings for me.

Just so many tremendous scenes throughout the film.

How could he not know that going with the horse transporting family would end up with them getting killed or in serious trouble , considering who was trying to find Logan, the girl and the Professor. Logan certainly knew this that is why he was reluctant to take their kind offer of dinner but he had to give-in to the professor.

Then after the dinner at their house Logan wanted to go , knowing they were in danger but again the Professor makes Logan change his mind.

They went Full Game of Thrones with that family. In a "normal" comic book movie, you'd expect at most the father to be killed, if the hero didn't manage to save them all. Instead, the whole family is wiped out. And the father dies hating Logan.

Charles' death was also brutally off-hand. He makes the admission that he'd killed some of the X Men, then is stabbed to death by X 24. There is no redemptive final battle, no chance to make peace with Logan. He's just stabbed and left to bleed out.

Hell of a movie. Not the best comic book film I've seen but definitely an upper-tier one and probably a top 3 X-Men film.

It's tough with the X-Men movies because it's like there's a pretty wide chasm between the really good ones and the lesser ones yet not too much distance between the movies in each of those broader groups.

Well, Origins flat out stinks. Apocalypse was unmemorable and lackluster. And I think the Wolverine is dull. Last Stand is at least entertaining though not good. First X-Men is pretty good but underwhelming.

Then you have X-2, First Class, DOFP, and Logan as varying shades of awesome.

Logan, as some of you have noted, though, is tonally very different from the rest, to the extent that it almost does not feel like an X-Men movie per se.

I find it a little strange though that Canada is this hallowed sanctuary that somehow this megacorporation with seemingly bottomless resources can't go.

Hollow inside? HOLLOW INSIDE?!? You are hollow inside, you son of a bitch. Good day to you.

X-23 was cool and all, but there was no connection there at all. She's a vulnerable little girl, but she's a walking killing machine that can slaughter 10 men without sweating. She's his daughter, but not really though... Was his clone his brother? Made in a lab. It was obvious as hell they weren't going to kill a little girl on the big screen, and the film's tone made it abundantly clear Charles and Logan were going to die. It was just a matter of when. Insanely predictable.

Also when Charles was bitching at Logan like "this is what a home and a family looks like, you asshole" and in Logan's face you can see "I had a home and I had a family and you killed them all and now I'm trying to keep you safe, motherfucker" but all he says is "yeah".

Nice analysis.

The father dies confused and not knowing what's going on. He just knows Logan stabbed him and killed his family, so there's no difference or able to determine "good" or "bad" Logan just Logan. He mustered up every bit of life he could to avenge his family only to come up short and just gave out.

Charles died when he was most vulnerable. He was comfortable in what he thought to be a safe place. A nice bed, something he hasn't had in who knows how long, the most comfortable and peaceful he's been in a long time, he then spills out every bit of emotion he has carried for years to who he assumes is Logan which makes him twice as vulnerable only to be caught off guard, confused and killed by the person he loves the most. The only person he loves left.

Then he dies in the back of a truck in the arms of the man he loves but also "kills" him...

Tremendous.

Never thought of this. I'm seeing it one more time tonight so I'll look for this.

I'm all for not spoon-feeding the audience, and utilizing mystery/ambiguity... But it was all way too disconnected. Some sort of flashbacks/dream memory sequences would have done SO much for this film. It would have put the Charles-Logan relationship over the top and spiked the emotional stakes of the film.

Origins, Last Stand, and Apocalypse all legitimately sucked.
First Class is pretty bad.
X1, X2, and DoFP were decent.
Logan, Deadpool are heads, shoulders, knees, and toes above the rest.
