Law enforcement is most obese profession - study

I wouldn't recommend spanish armed/security forces, unless you are into trashy fascist gay parades

hahaha, well at least gays are usually in shape

Interesting i don't think I've ever seen an obese Canadian cop , same job .

Edit: just checked with the wife , she can't remember seeing a fat Canadian cop either.
I have. pretty small percentage. I knew one that was 6'8" over 400lbs. nicknamed stacker, as in the burger king stacker. No surprise he knew the best places to eat. Funniest part is he was a bicycle cop.

Do you all know that you can eat mcdonalds every single day and not get fat ?

Obviously if a cop is fat he just likes to eat a lot and not just fast food at wotk but just a big quantity of food all the time .

I talked to a female in law enforcement today. She said the amount of sitting and the hours are hard on you. You've gotta eat right which is tough. And work out when you're off duty.
A lot of people sit that many hours during a week . Police man typically only work 3 days a week or 2 and half weeks and 1 and a half weeks off . They get a lot of time off so all that sitting and cant pack a lunch and no time to work out comments are just excuses .

Yes there are things they can do to stay healthy. It's not an easy job if that's what you're saying. They have health problems for a reason. Two reasons of which I stated. And the statistics show that.

Because they have a lot more time than the average working adult to sit around and be lazy ? Because unfortunately that much is true . Compound that with eating a lot of fast food and sitting on your job and that is probably why the profession is full of fat people .

I don't know if you just want to demonize law enforcement. But if you put the rest of the population into the job of a cop, you'd get the same results in terms of health. I agree they eat unhealthy. I already said that.

Because if given that amount of off time lumped into a 4 day weekend most people would be equally as lazy as most over weight cops . It's just that they don't have jobs that allow for that kind of time off in large and frequent lumps .

The way these statistics are calculated are misleading.

#1) "Law Enforcement" is a very broad umbrella, particularly in this study.

Corrections Officers, Fish and Wildlife (Game Wardens), Fire Marshalls, etc, TSA, etc are technically "Law Enforcement", and calculated as such in this study.

They are not "Police Officers" in the sense that you all know them. Police are generally much more fit, particularly when starting in the profession.

#2) People age poorly in high stress jobs.

There are other proffessions that score higher for stress and lower for obesity . I think as i stated before it has less to do with the actual job and more to do with the unusual type of hours they work versus play . If you had cops spread out their hours in a typical 9 to 5 5 days a week you will probably see obesity rates closer to that of other professions .

I can't imagine a job that is higher stress than being a police or corrections officer in a rough beat.

I understand what you're saying, I just don't agree with the premise/study.

I wonder about that sometimes. My shop runs 12 hour shifts 6-6. The day shift guys are fat, the night shift guys are not. I cant imagine it is healthy for any of us though.

I think the hours have something to do with it. And part of that is having normal sleep hours. This female officer in her late twenties said she works like 2:30 pm to 11:30 pm. She is still in great shape. But she said the hours are tough on her. And she doesn't have the worst hours.

Where, in the squad car? I dont think most are in a position to go back to the precinct to get their lunch out of the fridge on a regular basis

Probably not as stressful and they probably have better accommodations to bring their own food if they want

I bring my lunch to work as does everyone who works for the painting contractor next door and the landscapers next to them. We all recently discovered these little insulated boxes called coolers. You put cold things in them and they stay cold. That said, I took my lunch to work for years, as did many millions of people, without coolers. In fact, I know this will be hard to believe, my mom used to pack my lunch in a brown paper bag.

And new parents have worse sleep hours and they dont get a 4 day weekend . A lot of people are stressed , a lot of people buy their lunch , a lot of people are tired , a lot of people have no time to go to the gym , a lot of people sit most of the day at their job . But what a lot of people don't have is 3 day and 4 day weekends bi weekly .

Cops have lots of time to carry on extra martial affairs and sit around and drink .

I've heard the divorce rates of cops is high. I think the power goes to some of their heads. Some women are also turned on by men in uniform so the temptation is real for officers to cheat on their wife. I'm not excusing it, the profession just is ripe for opportunity in having an affair on your wife. And some of them take advantage of that. It's scumbag behavior, but some do it anyway.

I would kill for those hours.

Was gonna post this. I run the 6pm to 6am. 2-11 sounds amazing. All the time off, and daylight.
I switch between 0700-1800 and 2000-0700 right now. Next month I switch to 1500-0200 for the whole summer.
