If the police and government relinquish all their rifles and only use hand guns, then it would make more sense (even then no because people can still illegally smuggle arms in).

These are quite different eras, settings, contexts. Let’s stipulate that it is hard to compare such radically different events. Still, the bare numbers tell a story.

Princeton, 1777: 25-44 Americans killed.

Saratoga, 1777: 90 Americans killed.

Yorktown, 1781: 28 Americans killed.

Even by the standards of modern warfare, the numbers are striking.

The Second Battle of Fallujah (November-December 2004) is viewed by many as the bloodiest and most intense battle of the Iraq War. According to Wikipedia 95 Americans died over 6 weeks; 54 between November 7th and 16th.

The current death toll out of Las Vegas is 58.

Sen. John Thune (R-SD) on Tuesday responded to calls for increased gun control after the massacre in Las Vegas by telling reporters that shooting victims had a responsibility to protect themselves from gunfire.

“It sounds like [the shooter] used conversion kits and other things, you know, to make the weapons more lethal,” Thune reportedly told MSNBC’s Hallie Jackson. “We’ll look at the facts when we get them all in here. I think a lot of us want to do everything we can to prevent tragedies like that from happening again.”

But Thune shied away from the topic of gun control, arguing, “t’s an open society and it’s hard to prevent anything.”

Instead, the Republican senator offered advice to potential victims.

“I think people are going to have to take steps in their own lives to take precautions,” he opined. “To protect themselves. And in situations like that, you know, try to stay safe. As somebody said — get small.”

I agree. The victims were out of line.

You are woefully uninformed. The AR-15 platform is one of the most used and trusted self defense platforms. Also, it has come to light he was using bump fire stocks to rapidly discharge otherwise semi-automatic rifles. These are borderline gimmicky with its negative affect on accuracy. The ATF knows they are a novelty. The shooter overcame that by positioning himself 30 stories up volleying down into 20,000 people.

We are a free people. We generally have had the right to own weaponry on par with the government be it wall guns, field guns or naval guns as privateers. That parity has certainly devolved but the spirit has been true since the start. This was partially nerfed post 1934 with the passing of the NFA when we were dealing with the sensationalized crimes of organized gangs.
