Keosawa's Powerlifting Log

I know it wasn't what you hoped for, but congratulations on setting 2 meet PRs. After having an injury like yours, some people would've just opted out in doing the meet. But you not only managed to finish it, you also set those 2 meet PRs. Just shows what kind of person you are. I hope everything goes well with your MRI tomorrow.

Well, first of all, congrats on the bench and pull PR's. You've put a lot of work into your bench, at least from my perspective, so it's good to see that come through at a meet even though you weren't 100% for it.

Injuries and set backs happen as you well know. I've found it's best not to dwell. You already approach things objectively so I doubt you'll be spinning your wheels in emotional mud for too long. It seems like you did about the best anyone could ask given the knee(ish?) issue you're dealing with. I mean... wasn't it hard to walk a matter of days ago?? Still hit a bench and pull PR so.. :)

Do you feel like the wrapped squats yesterday made the issue worse or did it pretty much stay the same?

Your MRI is tomorrow anyways, right??

No reason to be heartbroken about anything. It sounds like the knee didn't suffer any damage in the meet and you went on to hit meet PRs of the next two lifts. That sounds much preferable to hitting 1400 at the cost of possible knee damage.

Congrats for the PRs and good luck to getting fully healthy for your July meet.

Thanks, hatch. I had missed those two lifts before, so it was cool to get them this time, even though I figured I was due for them. It wasn't a great meet, but at least there were some positives.

Yeah--my bench is definitely stronger now. 303 was easy, but I'm currently hitting a wall with anything past 310. I go from an easy attempt to an unmakeable one in a matter of a few pounds.

And yeah, I'll approach this one objectively. I have ideas for training this cycle; I'm going to take a lot of the positives from last cycle and try to re-apply them this time, while focusing on keeping myself a little less banged up. That might mean incorporating more volume, but not so much volume that I'm run ragged. It might also mean not training in wraps and just throwing them on at the next meet and seeing what happens.

In my opinion, the issue isn't any worse. It flared back up, but I don't think it's any worse than before. The MRI's tomorrow, so it doesn't really matter much, I guess.

It's just tough to put a lot into a training cycle and go backwards, I guess. The thing that kept me going when I dropped my numbers down and was training beltless and wrapless was that the humbling experiences I was going through would pay off with a bigger squat. That, of course, didn't happen here.

So, it feels sort of like wasted effort, but I did learn a lot from the process, and I did get stronger; I just now need to get healthy again and start building good, sustainable progress.

Congrats on the PRs, Kyle! Nice going under the circumstances!

Thanks, man. The circumstances weren't ideal--admittedly, I felt GREAT for all three meets last year, so I think I've just been lucky in the past. This is a part of competing, and I just have to deal with it.

I agree. Its an accurate assessment. If anything you provide inspiration for us to effectively push through adversity. Not necessarily grunting through the pain, but to understand our limits and do our best with them, and without regret or retreat (for a lack of a better term). Great job to you and your team!

Looking forward to your next endeavor!

Have you ever considered switching to a wrapless division?

I mean, the wraps were the obvious culprit in your knee issue. And the wraps aren't really necessary to work hard on breaking records and being the best PLer you can possibly be. Plenty of wrapless records out there to break.

Hey man, I was exciting to see you go for 1400 and it's great news that you still hit 2 meet PRs despite an injury. Did you feel that your calf, or opening ~10lbs too light affected your 513 attempt?

Anyways, I'm interested to see how you adjust your training to build up to a July meet. Good luck!

Congrats on the PR's bro, hitting a personal best at your level is something to be proud of. Keep it up dude.

Fucking Lulz at you going bananas there.

It's pretty safe to say 1400 is there when you are healthy. You'll have it soon enough.

Cannot *believe* how fast 573 comes off the floor and gets to your knees. Unreal.

Yeah, your strength curve is ridonculous. I guess that's what happens when you pull with a rounded back and like half your main deadlift work is from a deficit.

Great deadlift Kyle! I like the intimidation tactics prior to the lift :)

Thanks, everyone! I have to fix that funky hitch in my deadlift--I've developed it over the last six months and it's as much a mechanical issue as it is a strength issue. I *think* I can smooth out my pull past my knees just by getting in more reps at that point. I'm currently coming up with a plan.

Okay, so, I got my MRI results. My doctor told me that I have a "partially torn gastrocnemius" (for me, it's the top of the calf on the inside where it connects to the back of the knee) muscle. She told me I have two options: surgery, or physical therapy. She said that the surgery is usually not necessary, as these heal on their own most of the time. I told her I'd like to try therapy with sports medicine, so that's the current plan. I don't think this will limit me in training beyond not being able to use knee wraps for a while; I should still be able to squat and deadlift sometime soon. It's not a full tear, which is obviously good news.

COME ON COME ON COME ON COME ON

Regardless good work, and hope the therapy works out

I think if you can fix it through rehab and physical therapy it is *very* good news. It seems like surgery is a roll of the dice, but I think with non-surgical treatment it is possible to come back 100%, or even more than 100%. I am as far from your level as it is possible to be, but that seems to have been my experience with my rotator cuff tears.
