Keosawa's Powerlifting Log

Do you see an issue with using chains as opposed to bands?? I just don't like the feel of bands. No legitimate reason. :)

I just recently started messing around with both. I feel like the bands throw the bar path off a little, while chains feel much more natural, especially for dead lifting. Bands also feel rougher on my shoulders. Is there a big difference between the two I don't know about Keo?

Bands are optimal for providing an overspeed eccentric phase, while chains and reverse bands are not.

And yes, bands will take you out of the groove, while reverse bands will put you in the groove.

I've noticed you are doing DE stuff with reversed bands. I don't think I've ever seen that in the Westside literature or other peoples logs. Is it more common than I think? I thought DE stuff was done against bands to promote speed

I very, very rarely do this--in fact, this weekend was the only time I can remember doing this. I wanted to try it, and I wasn't happy with how it felt. I don't think it's more common than you think--quite frankly, it sucked and was stupid.

Today I'm going to do some reverse-band box squatting before my regular squats. I almost never switch up the order, but I feel like going for a real max in the blue reverse-band squat. I'll try to get video of today's training session, and I'll even video my measurement of the resistance at the end so that ya'll know I'm telling the truth.

This is one of those days where I feel like challenging myself, so I'm going to give in and go for it.

585 on the box squat was a +25 lb. PR; the weight was about 470 lbs. at bottom, 540 lbs. at top. I have video of my final three work sets, but the video, I'm afraid, is terrible. Still, I'll probably post it.

Afterwards, I was really wiped, and I almost shut down squatting after 315, but I went through it and didn't struggle much with my work sets. I limited my reps to five on 390 and completed them pretty easily. I did, however, get the trainer spotting on the bench press in front of me to back literally right into my face as I was unracking 390. This is the second time he's done this to me.

How does that even happen?!

I would say something, I really don't know you hold your tongue. Something along the lines of,

"I appreciate your spotting someone on the bench press but could please have a little more spacial awareness when my training partners and I are squatting heavy. This isn't the first time you've done this and you could really hurt someone."

Stern yet respectful. I would have said something after the first incident. Jokers doing stupid shit around you is a great way to get seriously injured in the gym. If you don't say anything and he does this a third time and hurts you or a partner you'll be kicking yourself.

Damn awesome PR man, that's a hell of a squat

He's definitely mancrushing on you.

Thanks everyone! Here's the video I took from yesterday. I'm sorry the angle isn't great--it looks like candid camera shot this--and I'm especially sorry that there's a huge barbell in the way on my final PR attempt. I kept it in because you can see how hard it was for me to walk this out and how agonizingly slow it was coming up. This video also shows what the tension looks like when I measured it on bottom and on top.

Some of you know him from Sweat Pit; KevinAlvy makes an appearance in this one to help me rack these and get in the way as I'm trying to record the band tension.

Finally, regarding the trainer: this is the second time his back has made contact with my face as I was setting up for my squat. Because I was ready to unrack it, I put it out of my mind when it happened and just focused on the set. When he bumped into me, I let him know I was displeased, but that was the end of it. Afterwards, he apologized, and I said it was fine. If it ever happens a third time, it won't be fine.

Since you're the resident reverse band guy, how's this set up?

I'm feeling a lot better about staying tight but it still seems a little out of control. 345 on the bar, takes off about 55 at the top. Messed up, wanted 3 at the top. Oh well.

Also, congrats on the big ass squat sir.

Awesome PR, Keo! Even with the bands, it must have felt great to have 585 on your back! Congrats!
