Keosawa's Powerlifting Log

Hey, I have a bench rep PR video up in my log. If you've got some free time I"d love any technical advice you could give on it :D

Can you elaborate on this "common theme" that you referenced ?

To put it plainly: I contacted JTS about sponsorship and was told that when they had an open spot, they'd be in touch with me. I did what they asked of me and kept them updated, but they didn't respond back again. Since then, their open spots have gone to Pete Rubish and Sam Byrd, with no word given to me.

Now, the latter is far more accomplished and deserving than I am, and the former is quite strong and has a great following, so I don't disagree with the decision--I wish, however, that I had been given a straight(er) answer. I've also lost out on the Titan yearly sponsorship for the last two years, so I'm batting .000 right now.

That's okay though. I'm at a point now where I realize I should take care in deciding who I align myself with. Before, I was over-eager to get sponsored, because that would make me a "success." Now, I realize that I have to define myself as a lifter and keep in touch with those people who are similarly minded as myself, rather than throw myself out there.

Ever contacted Anderson Powerlifting about a sponsorship? Ken is a great dude and has sponsored a couple buddies of mine. Granted being that you're a #1 lifter in your class you should be going after higher end sponsorships, as you allude to in your last paragraph. I was just wondering.

Keo, If I owned my own successful company, I would sponsor you! You too, KS... Just cause, though...

Nope, no real cardio. I walk a few miles every day though, since I don't own a car. So that, I guess, is my low-intensity, steady-state cardio.

Everyone has a record time, belph. Even if it is juvenile.

And thanks, 3 dimensional. EliteFTS never responded to my application for sponsorship, so I'm guessing they're not interested in me. That's a pretty common theme, but I'm OK with it--at least they seem happy to publish me, which is cool.

Somebody call Sherwood, let's get sherdog to sponsor Keo. Or something.

From yesterday:

Normal-Stance Squats
Barx8
95x8
135x5
185x3
225x3
275x3
315x3 (ugly)
315x3 (uglier)
135x a lot

SMR

Box Squats (w/ reverse mini-bands; 35 lbs. added at bottom)
95x5
135x3
185x2
225x2
275x2
315x2
335x2
355x2
375x2
395x3

Lessons from today:

1.) I can't squat.

2.) I had no plan today, and it showed. Time to write this next cycle.

2.) This makes me depressed, but I was at least able to salvage the session with some quality reps on the box squat. 395x3 was about 360 at bottom, 390ish at top, which is a good unwrapped triple for me.

I think I checked this, but if I didn't, scold me.

I hadn't thought of that, so I'll go take a look. I'm just looking for someone to take a chance on me; I know I'll hold up my end.

Fuck. I just realized that most of my net worth is derived from my internal organs.

Those are some good lookin' numbers!

This week was a BIG improvement. I'm starting to hit my stride now.

Notes: Benchy felt much better today. I'm starting to rediscover my groove after just feeling really inexplosive off my chest these past few weeks. 250x5x5 is a good amount of volume to attain at a reasonable RPE; I think my current five-rep max is 265, but I could likely hit 270-275, which means that this is about 92-93% of my current 5RM, which is about what I'm looking for right now for a RPE (I think that number will creep up to 95% in the coming weeks).

Overall, this was a good session done at a shit time (right before I had to fly and less than two days from my last bench session), so I can't complain. My body felt cranky, but it could just be the condensed training before I traveled that did it.

Notes: I trained at a gym in RI called Ocean State Gym today, and it was great. I didn't even know they were open when I got there, so I drove past it twice--it's a big, spacious garage gym with everything you could imagine. If you like old, rusted gyms, then this one is perfect: everything's worn down and bent to shit; there are cobwebs everywhere, and I shared my platform with a spider; the place is actually cluttered in corners with cool old equipment. When I got there, there was one guy at the counter and not a single member, so I was literally training by myself for the first half-hour.

As far as the pulling went, it took me a while to even get set up, and I felt like a dope asking this guy if I could pull with this bar and pull on that platform. I used a squat bar to pull because I didn't know if they had a deadlift bar, but the lack of give was offset by the fact that it was already pretty badly bent. I'm guessing the mats were 2.5", though it could have been a little less than that.

521x4 was a great pull. I used straps, because the bar was really rolling in my hands, but I pulled it without chalk and didn't take any long breaks between reps. My best pull off the floor is 520x3, and I bet I could have hit 520x4 off the floor today. So, maybe the extra pulling volume is paying off...?

That's some serious position work man. Nice.

There's no way I could pull that intensity at elevation right now.

Why can't you squat?

Knee still bugging you even without wraps?

I was supposed to do one more set of 426x5, but my back was pretty blown up by then, so I stopped. I'm just really trying to get in quality reps without burning out before the July meet here. These felt real smooth, and I at least did 'em without baby powder, which does make it harder for me to lock my deadlifts out. I'm hoping that maybe my deadlift responds well to the volume and I see a nice little jump in it--580-590 sounds f'n awesome for July, if I could manage it.

I'm glad that place worked out for you, dude.

The place was great. Thanks a lot for the recommendation.

Why can't you squat?

The knee feels pretty good! It's a little achy sometimes when I'm sitting for a while, but the knee sleeves were a godsend and it's not bothering me in training. My ankle feels great, and my adductors have been treating me well. Even my ribs have withstood the belted squatting. My back's been a little tight from all the pulling, but right now I'd say I'm about as healthy as I have been in the last four or five months.

I just meant that I suck at squatting.

Because I do.

...And it was getting in my head last week. I saw myself squatting from the side, knew immediately that I was breaking technique badly, then messed with it and only got further disheartened by the number of things I do poorly. But I'm doing better now, and next week will be an improvement.

look forward to your next meet video.

that deadlift pull where you yelled at the bar is one of my all time favorites.
