I see no merit in imposing tariffs to bring back manufacturing jobs that are low on the value chain anyway when outsourced workers in other countries are perfectly capapble of making cheap toasters.

I do want investment in American manufacturing in critical sectors like defense and computing partly because there are national security concerns around those industries and partly because those are manufacturing jobs that are higher on the value chain and thus provide better jobs than toaster manufacturers would.

I love Biden but his protectionism is bad, he clearly does it for political purposes. Some of that is to be expected with any candidate so its not unique to him but I still don't like it. He really should be criticized for it more but protectionism is popular among the populist wing of both parties and the more elite wings rarely push back publicly on it because they are afraid of the optics.

Obviously there are some situations in which tariffs might make sense but Trump and Vance are running on what seems to be an expansive policy of protectionism that is almost certainly going to raise prices with little to no upside.

I do think it’s funny that A. These are, now and previously, way smaller than Trump has always historically gotten and B. These are being celebrated by the same people who said “crowds don’t matter” when Trump did the same and better.
