Julianna Pena Is Legit

Did you see how she held on to the guillotine and was pretty much begging for a Von Flue? Yeah, she's not bad but it has to do more with her grit than actual skills.

This. She messes up a lot of fundamentals but is usually bailed out by her toughness & grit. Even in her win against Zingano she gave up takedowns that should never have happened. As in she had Cat pushed up on the fence then totally forgot where her feet were, which allowed Cat to push her over for a freebie takedown. Or having zero awareness of where Shevchenko's hips were and letting her rotate around for the armbar. Or struggling mightily against both Val and GDR for takedowns because she doesn't know the proper body positioning for a clinch takedown.

1 lost = close to a title shot.

WMMA... :p

= a title shot

Lol middleweights.

If she spent more time in the gym, yeah maybe. She didn't look athletic enough at all to compete against the tops of the division. Even her good points against GDR were just meh.

I like WMMA but FW and BW are trash division. There is no elite talent there and even Mandy Nunes looks on her way out and out of shape.

Sherdog is so backwards, argue about average fighters being better than they are, and deem actual talented fighters hype trains, lol. I guess Peña is good for a female. This is the second time she's been submitted by a striker.

Strikers get knocked out by grapplers all the time. What is your point?

That she's a legit gatekeeper forever?

Edit: sorry let me rephrase that... she got submitted by the equivalent Francis Ngannou off his back.

There are not enough Juliana Peña pictures in this thread!

WMMA is weird in that there are very few girls that are just head and shoulders (lol) above the rest and Pena isn't in that category.

Legit....legit what? Human? Fighter?

Sure.

She's not elite, tho.
She had potential to be.

But the absurd knee injury and then pregnancy can obviously be a destroyer of potential.

Legit awful if you ask me. They hyped her up as phenomenal wrestler and BJJ artist and she barely was able to take down GDR and on top of that got submitted by her.

I see people calling Pena overrated because she lost to GDR, but it's GDR! The number one ranked fighter who gave WMMA GOAT Amanda Nunes hell and made her look beatable.
Plus, you shouldn't be shocked that she subbed Julianna because she nearly subbed Nunes too. She's clearly not just a kickboxer anymore.

Pena's loss before that was to another WMMA GOAT Valentine Shevchenko. A fight she was winning until she underestimated Val's ground game and subsequently got subbed and she was also winning against GDR too.
I think Pena is the only fighter aside from Nunes who gave GDR and Valentina their toughest fights.

Her striking has improved in leaps and bounds, too. I'm shocked she was able to stand with GDR and parry her punches. Her striking defense has always been very good; she's not a slow moving plodder like Aspen Ladd which is why GDR wasn't able to KO her and she even rocked GDR a few times!
She did get hit a few times but she ate those punches and GDR is the hardest hitter in the division.

Also, the fact that Pena was able to take GDR down easily when she got a hold of her should show you how elite her grappling is because Amanda's the only other fighter in the UFC who could take GDR down.

Julianna is legit and deserves respect. She's only lost to two elite fighters in the UFC in very close fights and she was winning those fights but just made a mistake that cost her.
Nonetheless, she is an exciting fighter who always comes to fight and looks for the finish and although she lost this one, I think she's very close to a title shot.

Thank you Captain Obvious.

It was a competitive fight, Pena showed heart and brought it. But this was gonna be a tough one to win for her.
