Jones needs to end the heavyweight division and call Aspinall into the ring if he wins....

This is the WWE Era

Only to throw the belt at his feet, and walk off into the sunset. Then whoever holds the belt in future, will always be a paper champion.

"Heres your worthless belt and payhetic excuse cor a heavyweight division... have fun"

No, then he would forever be remembered as the guy who ran away from HW at the first sign of a real challenge.

He is a -700 favourite against Stipe.
He is a +130 underdog against Aspinall

Has Jones EVER been an underdog?

Jones has no intentions of staying at HW... he's already at a weight that would allow him to easily diet and cut to 205.

237 is only about 15lbs heavier than he was on fight night when he was LHW champ.

Jones is already a paper champ, he beat a guy that had just lost to the actual champion to get his belt.

The only thing he could do to make his reign even more of a joke is to not fight the interim champion and unify the belts against the best HW on the planet right now in Tom Aspinall.

At least if he unified, it gives a degree of legitimacy to the UFC belt, I agree.

I bet Dana had prayer circles and shit before the Ngannou/Problema fight, hoping Ferreira would win, so he could sign him and get the lineal line back into the UFC lol. That was an obsession of his for a long time, took him years to make that happen, when he signed Overeem. Was probably praying to a being who resides way south of Heaven, though

Nope. He is willing to fight anyone. Jones is not.

But a champion is paper if they haven't beaten the "actual" champion. Jon is paper for having never beat Franci$, so Tom will be double paper for having never fought Franci$ or Jon.

Unless you have some weird, obscure definition of "paper champ" that I'm unaware of?

He is the very definition of a paper champion.

I'm pretty sure if fighters are "paper champions" if the title has been stripped or vacated in the past, every champion in the UFC for the past several years is a paper champion. The fact that the lineal title stayed in the heavyweight division so long is a remarkable exception, not the rule.

There really is no exact definition of a paper champion as it really comes down to circumstances. I believe that if a fighter wins a title by not beating the actual champion, cause they leave, vacate or retire, they have a little more work to do before I can see them as the definitive champion. They are the champion technically, but it's still got the "paper" feel.

To me, a fighter needs to defend the belt and then I see them as a legit champ. So if Jon beats Stipe tonight, I will see them him as the definitive champion. And if Tom beats him then there really is no debate.

No, the HW champion is the guy who fights the best possible opponent. Aspinall is trying to do that. He would fight Ngannou if he could. He's trying his best to fight Jones.

Jones is not a serious heavyweight contender, and he knows it. Aspinall would hand him his own ass.
