He's got to be one of the Top 10 most overrated actors in the history of acting.

Leonardo DiCaprio as Joker would have been interesting. Guess that one fell through.

Joaquin Phoenix in Talks to Play the Joker in Standalone Movie from Todd Phillips

Joaquin Phoenix is the top choice to play the Joker in the upcoming stand-alone movie from The Hangover director Todd Phillips.

Phillips will direct the movie from a script he is co-writing with Scott Silver, the scripter behind 8 Mile and The Fighter. While plot details are largely unknown, the stand-alone is supposed to be set in Gotham City in the early 1980s.

The film is being developed by Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment as part of a label of films that can exist outside of the continuity of its shared universe — such as Wonder Woman, Justice League, Batman v Superman, and Man of Steel. Joker is already a part of the existing universe, with Jared Leto starring as the classic villain in 2016's Suicide Squad.

This isn't the first time Phoenix has entertained the idea of super hero movie.

The three-time Oscar nominee was offered the role of DC villain Lex Luthor in Batman v Superman, and was in talks to playDoctor Strangefor Marvel. Ultimately, he passed on both projects, meaning that his participation in Phillips' Joker movie is not a sure thing.

In September, The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Warner Bros. was courting Leonardo DiCaprio for the Joker movie.

Phoenix will next be seen in Gus Van Sant's Don't Worry, He Won't Get Far on Foot, based on the memoir of late cartoonist John Callahan. The film just premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. He is also set for the Annapurna western The Sisters Brothers.

Yup. I honestly don't hate the casting but the whole movie itself shouldn't exist. I don't want to know where The Joker came from at all. Much less spend 90 minutes telling me every small detail about him.

Good I love anything batman and I love Joaquin Phoenix.

I like the casting choice. But I have faith in DC to fuck it up.

This could end up being great (with Phoenix). I just hope he won't be imitating Ledger's Joker like Leto did. I'd rather see more Hamill-esque influence.

Hamill = goat joker laugh.

Pretty much tells you all you need to know.

Joker origin story is awesome but also could come off very campy -- hope they don't include the cape and red bucket / hood

I don't understand that because isn't it prime part of the Joker's appeal that his origin is irrelevant. He is basically a force of nature and the why? he is like he is irrelevant.

Wouldn't finding out he is a bad guy because his daddy touched him in the bad place make him grounded and potentially relate-able and all the stuff he is not supposed to be?

Irrelevant? It was a central plot in one of the most revered graphic novels of all time. It also leads into the Red Hood story line which has quasi been addressed in the current DCEU. Doing the Joker Origin story could lead into amazing future story lines.
