John Candy vs John Goodman - Most beloved actor?

Candy is a better comedian.

John Goodman is an outstanding actor.

JC. But Goodman is my man too. Loved him as Dan Connor and Walter. But JC's movies with John Hughes were just too loaded with amazing.

JC:
Uncle Buck
Planes Trains
Great Outdoors
Original Vaction Movie
Blues Brothers
Home Alone
Cool Runnings
Harry Crumb
Splash
Summer Rental

That lineup is pretty unbeatable in the world of comedy

John Candy is alright, I guess, but I don't particularly like the kind of movies he was in. When I think of him, all I remember is the polka guy in Home Alone.

John Goodman on the other hand has been in some great movies and TV series, and steals pretty much every scene he's in.

Two completely different beasts though. Not even sure they should be compared to each other. What do they have in common besides name, Blues Brothers and being fat?

Goodman, IMO.

I'd have paid good money to watch a Battle of the Johns: Goodman vs. Candy steel cage match back in the day.

I like Goodman but I think Candy has had more quality roles. Planes, Trains & Automobiles and The Great Outdoors are 2 of my favorite movies. Outside of the Big Lebowski, Roseanne & The Babe (which isn't that great of a movie) I can't really think of many memorable roles for Goodman.

Also Candy did Camp Candy one of my favorite cartoons growing up.

Goodman was also in these:

Raising Arizona
Revenge of the Nerds
Monsters, Inc.
Arachnophobia
Fallen
The Big Easy

etc...

A better question would be Chris Farley vs John Candy

Candy.

Lovable in every role he is in. Just seems like a great guy.

Goodman is awesome but he can also be scary with his temper.

This is one of the greatest questions ever asked on the internet. For some reason, when I think about celebrities who exude likability, it's these two.

Goodman by a slim, slim margin.

Kevin Smith once told a story about how he discovered he couldn't afford to pay Goodman for an indie movie he was doing (after Goodman already signed on) and was worried Goodman was gonna walk, but when he finally built up the courage to tell him he couldn't pay him, Goodman didn't care and did the part anyway. Wasn't even mad. Same jolly guy just happy to help.

I've heard stories about Candy too about how he was the most loveable guy on set and would always brighten the mood and bring a smile to your face.

That is nice to read. Too many Christian Bales in the world.
